Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts*

Here’s a more negative reaction to the movie:

Not a big fan of the MCU in general, but this sounds perfectly typical of the franchise to me, and as we know most of the movies have done just fine. My biggest complaint about the MCU storywise is that pretty much any time it makes an interesting choice, it will back away from that quickly in the same movie/series. This would just be more of the same -- regression to the safe zone.

Its because anytime they try to tell an interesting story they get butchered by critics and fans alike, see Eternals, Marvels, etc. So they go back to what worked previously and then get blamed for not being original and being formulaic.

Agreed. Eternals is one of the ones I liked, which makes sense as Chloe Zhao said it was inspired at least in part by Man of Steel.

Weeeelllllllllll.....I don't think the reason they got butchered is they were "interesting stories." I think it has more to do with being bad movies. ;)
Eternals was not a bad movie in my opinion. Marvels you could argue that even if I enjoyed it. But it seems anytime they go away from the formulaic comic storytelling they get butchered.

I mean, you just gave a movie review consisting entirely of emojis. I'm not sure you're the arbiter on what's compelling or not.

We talk all the time on here (well, mostly in the BO thread) about mismatches between audience wants and what is actually produced, and Irish is not wrong here in suggesting that the MCU audience in particular has a very narrow definition of what they find acceptable both in story complexity and in tone. It's a bit funny, really, considering that the comics themselves have a rather wide variety of both stories and tone.

Are you under the impression this is the place for “cinema critique”…again?
Are you under the impression that you have some say in the matter, again? Its not against forum rules so I don't see how its any of your concern.

Why do you continue to try to gatekeep how and what posters can talk about here? If posters want to provide cinematic critique of any Disney movie including MCU movies they have every right. If you don't find it compelling then don't participate.

Eternals was the film I was looking forward to the most that phase. And it was just not well put together in my opinion. I get what you're saying about when they stray they get butchered, and in a way I agree. But until they make something really good that strays from the formulaic way, I'm not ready to say that's why. Personally I think the criticism has been fairly accurate in general.

Understand and see your point. I just don't know what it'll take to be considered "really good" to you. I don't know if that type of storytelling can exist in the comic movies.

It is not just Marvel….I am a The Last Jedi defender…. I loved that Star Wars moved in a new direction….but many fans were upset that it did not match their script headspace….I am bummed that I will never see Rian Johnson’s trilogy vision

Yeah, slow moving Battlestar Galactica chase, pointless Fin mission to ride space horses, unarmed and unshielded speeders against walkers, green walrus milk, keep your commanders in the dark on strategy, kill Snoke off, no training but can lift huge boulders. That is definitely not in my script headspace.

Actually I think you're totally right. Moving to something new isn't a bad thing. Except the sequel trilogy wasn't the time to do it in my opinion. I think that's were most fell off the boat. Right or wrong people wanted one last adventure with their heroes as the heroes. After that, transition to whatever you want. Or just do something new from the start and leave the original characters out. If a new trilogy started 4 or 5 hundred years after ep6, I don't think we have the issues and division we have now.

I love Eternals, but what "interesting story" was The Marvels trying to tell? It was one of the most half-baked, lazily slapped together movies Marvel ever made. The only parts of The Marvels that worked for me where when they leaned into the absurd aspects (the singing planet, the flerkens eating people to the tune of "Memories" from Cats), but those moments were few and far between.

As much as I don’t care about continuity and prefer to view each separate movie as it’s own piece of art….i will contradict myself to say one missed opportunity was to have Luke, Leia, and Han all together one last time in The Force Awakens while the actors were all still Around
