Its because anytime they try to tell an interesting story they get butchered by critics and fans alike, see Eternals, Marvels, etc. So they go back to what worked previously and then get blamed for not being original and being formulaic.

Eternals was not a bad movie in my opinion. Marvels you could argue that even if I enjoyed it. Eternals was the film I was looking forward to the most that phase. And it was just not well put together in my opinion. I get what you're saying about when they stray they get butchered, and in a way I agree. But until they make something really good that strays from the formulaic way, I'm not ready to say that's why. Personally I think the criticism has been fairly accurate in general.
Understand and see your point. I just don't know what it'll take to be considered "really good" to you. I don't know if that type of storytelling can exist in the comic movies.
Yeah, slow moving Battlestar Galactica chase, pointless Fin mission to ride space horses, unarmed and unshielded speeders against walkers, green walrus milk, keep your commanders in the dark on strategy, kill Snoke off, no training but can lift huge boulders. That is definitely not in my script headspace.
Actually I think you're totally right. Moving to something new isn't a bad thing. Except the sequel trilogy wasn't the time to do it in my opinion. I think that's were most fell off the boat. Right or wrong people wanted one last adventure with their heroes as the heroes. After that, transition to whatever you want. Or just do something new from the start and leave the original characters out. If a new trilogy started 4 or 5 hundred years after ep6, I don't think we have the issues and division we have now.
I love Eternals, but what "interesting story" was The Marvels trying to tell? It was one of the most half-baked, lazily slapped together movies Marvel ever made. The only parts of The Marvels that worked for me where when they leaned into the absurd aspects (the singing planet, the flerkens eating people to the tune of "Memories" from Cats), but those moments were few and far between.
As much as I don’t care about continuity and prefer to view each separate movie as it’s own piece of art….i will contradict myself to say one missed opportunity was to have Luke, Leia, and Han all together one last time in The Force Awakens while the actors were all still Around
