Marvel in Hollywood Studios?

Honestly people, the only Marvel you may see in WDW is a Marvel comic book/merchandise store in DTD... They already sell Marvel toys in Once Upon A Toy so a Marvel dedicated store is not out of the question... You just won't see rides or character meet and greets...

I think you'd have a very hard time convincing somebody that theme park-type characters being at a theme park resort's shopping district is not a clear attempt to skirt around the issue. And agin, to what end? At best, they get to keep the characters and likely increase confusion as to where the attractions are located. At worst Universal Orlando Resort goes after Walt Disney World and Disney loses, which means they're out the money spent on the development, the money spent on the lawyers and I don't think it'd be wrong for damages to be sought as well.

I think all of the money made by The Avengers begs to differ.
I never said I didn't like the Avengers. I think the contract talking about families is unfair. I know it will never happen in WDW but I think its unfair to claim ALL Avengers, considering most of them are the main characters everyone knows and loves!

So, trying to keep this on target of what actually can/cannot appear in WDW.... does anyone think there would be a problem with doing a M&G at DTD? The restrictions in the contract don't seem to apply since it would not be within a theme park or in a "Mini-theme parks, recreation centers, game centers or the like". And it seems like a good way for Disney to promote the Marvel brand and any movies that are out, plus attach it to retail and help that.

You can bet Universal's lawyers would object. The outcome is anyone's guess until it happens. I can't really imagine Disney pushing that hard for it.

Exactly.

Wow. I see why the old timers try to kill the 'Marvel Discussion'.

And then multiply this discussion a dozen (conservatively) times over....

Yep. I have lost count of how many times this has been discussed here. Someone starts this thread every other week. I was surprised to see it start twice in the same week. Especially since we just had a very long "debate" about this a week or so before that. It's extremely tiresome when people refuse to acknowledge the facts at this point.

Did Universal object to the monorails? To me, it can be played off the same way -- this is an advertisement for the movie division of Disney and is not within any of the theme parks.

I mean, yes, I could imagine Disney not bothering since there's the possibility of legal issues, but I think that it would be allowed given the wording of the contract.

There were apparently some phone calls and a rerouting of the monorail to keep it outside of the theme parks. But I think when you cross over into M&Gs, that's a different animal. I could see Disney being able to do it. But I can't see that happening without a fight. And it's probably not worth it to Disney to have that fight. What do they gain from a M&G at DTD? Hardly worth it.

So...I'm confused...A Daredevil spinner is going to be part of Disney Springs?

No, Daredevil is getting a dark ride. Disney sees an opportunity to save a lot of money. Since Dardevil is black they are just going to have everyone walk through a dark room. It exits into a gift shop of course.

The spinner is Storm Force. Disney is picking it up from IOA next weekend.

Is Disney going to give up a ride for Storm Force? I hope they don't give up too much in the trade.

No. But since it is going in DHS, they are gutting the Great Movie Ride to turn into into Tony Stark's Expo, an Avengers meet and greet. Universal is also packing up all the newly designed Marvel costumes. They are paying Disney a delivery fee of course for taking all this cr@p off their hands. Now they can retheme the area to Care Bears like they really wanted to all along.

Interesting...since you're an expert in the legalese of this matter, are the Care Bears one of the Marvel family groups mentioned in the contract?

I have a new potential point, but please keep in mind it is forever (seemingly) off. Eventually the comics will enter public domain. That won't keep Universal from keeping a Marvel land, but it would allow Disney to use certain characters.

The public domain laws are extremely tricky though since they only cover the earliest works at first (until the rest have expired). Still, eventually, it would happen. Disney took full advantage of the Oz books when that occurred, hence the new Oz film that came out. Marvel is definitely a little more complicated than that though since certain characters were introduced at different times. Still, I think it would be interesting. It would seem like that if a character were to enter public domain, rights would be free (for that specific character) regardless of what family they are in.

My guess is that Disney will try to keep all their works from entering public domain though. In my opinion, they shouldn't be able to, but they pulled if off with Mickey Mouse, at least temporarily. Disney wouldn't want any Marvel characters to go into public domain more than Universal since they would also lose exclusive film rights. The point is, it would allow Disney to eventually have the chance to put any character in their parks if they wanted, even if I'm dead from old age when it happens.
