Let's talk baseball

Yep. I wanted to see if anyone else had posted this. It hasn't really sunk in yet.

Also, A-Rod is apparently going to sign a 10-year, $275 million contract with the Yankees. Lots of baseball news today.

At 41 years old...will A-Rod be playing $27.5million/year baseball? The Yankees just toss money around without even thinking.

Bonds Indicted By BALCO Federal Grand Jury

SAN FRANCISCO -- Major League Baseball's all-time home run king Barry Bonds was indicted Thursday on perjury and obstruction justice charges, according to KTVU reporter Rita Williams.

The five-count indictment -- four counts of perjury and one of obstruciton of justice -- capped one of the longest federal grand jury investigations in Northern California history -- a proceeding that introduced the sports world to the acronym BALCO (Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative) and led to the downfall of American track and field world and Olympic champions Marion Jones, Kelli White and Tim Montgomery.

It touched the NFL with several current and former players called to testify including former All-Pro linebacker Bill Romanowski.

Well, at least no one made him a $35/million a year player. And it does push the envelope to think that in his early 40's he'll be super productive. I think that the hope his he'll help them win a WS or two before then. I somehow can't get my brain wrapped around the signing a contract that is for more than a quarter billion dollars.

On the Bonds things what suprises me is that in the "he said-she said" type situation there is usually no indictment. What Bonds said in his originally testimony is that "he never knowingly used steroids." So..either they have evidence that he did "knowingly" use steroids or baseball is trying to distance itself from Bonds and drumming up an indictment behind the scenes is a good thing to do if that is your goal. One other thing I'm interested in is that during my long commute, I've heard talking heads say that the Mitchell report was going to name names and some of those names were going to be big. I had kind of assumed when the list (if it ever came out) would be kind of lame and disappointing. Now, I wonder if a few of the hundreds of interviews they conducted yielded fruitful information. We'll see..........

I see what you're saying about the Bonds thing. He may know NOW that he did...but how can they prove that he knew back when he was taking them? Hmm... This is a federal indictment though so they must have a "smoking gun" to do this. They wouldn't do this just on a hunch.

As far as the Mitchell Report goes...it won't matter unless those "big names" are still doing it...it is only recently that it is a rule in MLB.

If Bonds does jailtime...is 755 the number again?

The White Sox made a good trade today - Jon Garland for Orlando Cabrera. Garland may have been a workhorse as far as innings go, but his E.R.A. (other than 2005) has never been good. I'll take a Gold Glove, .290 hitting shortstop for Garland any day.

Now, we just need to sign Torii Hunter. :drevil:

I don't think I like this report I just found on ESPN.com. It says that the Red Sox are willing to part with Jacoby Ellsbury if the Twins will send them Santana. They refuse to part with both Jon Lester and Ellsbury together, but I would really rather try to hold onto Ellsbury.

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3138088

Especially since we saw how much it paid off when they went and got a veteran pitcher earlier this season :lookaroun GAG ME!

Keep Ellsbury...sure it would be nice to have Santana but Ellsbury would be an every day contributor. Sure, if they want to do a deal with Lester, fine...but not Ellsbury.

Personally, I don't see the Red Sox making a deal for him because they don't need him. I think it's leverage to make the Yankees up their ante.

So...the news outlets reported this morning that the Cubs will sign Fukudome. Now, we need to bring Harry Caray back to life just so we can have a running ticker that keeps track of how many times he butchers the name.

The Red Sox would prefer a 6 man rotation...which is why they want Santana. They'll play Beckett and Santana every 5th day as normal but give the other pitchers an extra day of rest. (Dice-K fizzled at the end of the season, Schilling is getting up there in age, and Wakefield has been battling that injury, then you'll have Buck who's a rookie that they want to ease into things...)
