Let's talk baseball

Iakona--my only "disagreement" with you is the OF situation. I read from an ESPN baseball guru that Boston will not want to HR-thin in the OF if Drew and Crisp go, meaning that Ellsbury will not have enough pop in his bat to merit standing pat. We'll see--this is why we have the offseason.

And, did anyone notice that the Tigers traded two prospects today for Edgar Renteria?

Drew is here to stay. This was only year 1 of a multi-year contract. He'll rebound.

Crisp hit .268 with 6 home runs in 2007. It may be worth it to go with Ellsbury.

Wow what a rally today:sohappy:. It has to be the sole intention of the Sox to sign lowell to a long-term deal. then let schill slide back to the national league. The real interesting move would be coco, bucholz, and lester for santana. And for arod i see boston business man frank mccourt signing him to join Torre

You could get rid of Lugo and pick up A-Rod for SS. I don't want him here though.

Looks like Schilling will retire in a Red Sox uniform.

That's a crazy contract though. He gets 2mil just to stay in shape?!?!!?
He gets another million if he gets just ONE Cy Young vote? (I'd pay off one of the voters ;) )

If all goes well...he could make 14 million total!

Now...great job Theo...now for Lowell...and then Francona.

(Not that I want him in Boston...but imagine a lineup of:

Ellsbury (CF), Youk (1B), Ortiz (DH), Ramirez (LF), A-Rod (SS), Lowell (3B), Varitek (C), Pedroia (2B), JD Drew (RF). WOW!

As I understand it that $2 million was originally part of the base salary, but Schilling requested it be made an incentive to prove he understood that his physical shape contributed to his ability to pitch a full season. Imagine another professional athlete being offered a $10 million dollar contract and saying great, but take $2 million off and make it an incentive to prove I know I need to be in shape?

Nobody can take away the fact that he's a team player.

High respect for that man...

News out of Tampa Bay...

We are no longer the Devil Rays; we are now the Rays. As in TAMPA BAY RAYS.

And, we have new uniforms.

I remember seeing the concept art for those new uniforms on ESPN.com about a month or so back and thinking they would look awful. Looks like I was right about that. It's so stupid to take the word "Devil" out of the name of the team as it serves no real purpose to get rid of it. At least not a baseball related one. It's not like changing the name is going to magically fill the seats or anything. Free parking at the stadium didn't even do that.

Bonds Indicted By BALCO Federal Grand Jury

SAN FRANCISCO -- Major League Baseball's all-time home run king Barry Bonds was indicted Thursday on perjury and obstruction justice charges, according to KTVU reporter Rita Williams.

The five-count indictment -- four counts of perjury and one of obstruciton of justice -- capped one of the longest federal grand jury investigations in Northern California history -- a proceeding that introduced the sports world to the acronym BALCO (Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative) and led to the downfall of American track and field world and Olympic champions Marion Jones, Kelli White and Tim Montgomery.

It touched the NFL with several current and former players called to testify including former All-Pro linebacker Bill Romanowski.

Yep. I wanted to see if anyone else had posted this. It hasn't really sunk in yet.

Also, A-Rod is apparently going to sign a 10-year, $275 million contract with the Yankees. Lots of baseball news today.
