Largest School Shooting in US History

Without reading through the whole thread, can someone tell me if the gunman killed himself, too? They were just talking about it on TV while ago and they didn't say yay or nay on that question.

I have hardly heard anything about it, either. I don't watch much news anyway, and I have been busy the past two days and have heard even less news than usual.
Yes he did after killing 32 others.....

This morning the Today show interviewed a VT student who was also a Columbine survivor - I can't imagine how she feels. This whole story just gets sadder and sadder.

My thoughts, prayers, and condolences go out to all the families and students at Virginia Tech.

I echo Tramp's sentiments, once again true heroes came forward in the face of adversity.

Oh my God.
To her, this is what life is.
How on earth do you get past that???

Dot posted this before over in MJ:

Please read and if you do not forward another e-mail this year, please forward this one so that it goes around the world.

Friday, April 20th is being known as "Hokie Day". Everyone is being asked to wear something maroon or orange in support of the families, friends and every victim of the tragedy of the Virginia Tech Massacre. If you do not have these colors to wear then we are all being asked to say a prayer for them. Please take a minute or five to do this.

By forwarding this you are asking other people to join everyone on Friday to support all victims of violence as well as ask for the violence around the world to stop.

To think that there are people out in the world like this....Makes me want to never ever let Maggie go anywhere ever...:(

God Bless all of the victims and their families.

I have roller coaster emotions about this. My heart bleeds with sorrow one minute and fills with hate and anger the next. I well up with tears listening to some reports and stiffen with combat resolve when I hear others. Am I the only one going thru this?

We're gonna hear a lot of Monday morning quarterbacking in the next few weeks. Truth is, we've become a society where preventative measures often lead to lawsuits, so very little is done until after a tragedy, and then the threat seems very clear and the dots are easily connected. :(

What is it about April?
Waco 4/19
Oklahoma City 4/19
Columbine 4/20
V-Tech 4/16?

*sigh*

The latest:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18169776/

Apparantly, in the time between the dorm & classroom shootings, he mailed a package to NBC News. So messed up....:(

I normally like NBC News, especially the Today show, and I agree with the network (as explained by Brian Williams) that this content was probably newsworthy and would need to be out (rather than sequestered and leaving people wondering what it said, open for conspiracy theorists); BUT I completely feel that NBC misjudged by emblazoning the images with the full-color NBC logo in the to left of every image before sending it out to other news organizations. Even the newspapers are acknowledging NBC copyright. (The logo is stronger than the normal little typed-in line, "courtesy of [source]," which would be discreet.)

For me, this logo being emblazoned on the images taints NBC's stated motives, of journalistic integrity and fairness to the story....

Good decision to get some of the content out there (just to show what it was); but bad decision to make it a commodity so blatantly.

Tramp - I've had exactly the same feelings - even the questions about April - it's sooooo difficult to comprehend.
Purely coincidentally, DH and I visited a mental health facility in Boston yesterday, and I couldn't help but think of what could have been/should have been different had this "man" been forced to seek the help that he so clearly needed.

The truth is that it is hard to FORCE someone who has not committed a crime to get help. You can even be sued for slander or other things if the accusation is mishandled. Our litigious society has hindered some otherwise well-meaning people. Sometimes that is a good thing, but sometimes like this it obviously has hurt us.

I guess it's the price we pay for freedom - but such a price!

Yep...we've all seen an emphasis on the "medical privacy" issue over the course of the last decade. From what I've heard, parents of college kids cannot, by law, be notified about these issues. Maybe some of our resident college students can verify that.

About these video clips...there needs to be responsible decisions made about broadcasting the killers remarks as possibly playing into his demented wishes. I fear that other depressed students, feeling much the same way but not acting on it, might be inspired to carry out horrific acts of violence on those they perceive as evil and even those they don't. Others will argue that it's a matter of freedom of information. I'm not willing to play Russian roulette with the lives of our kids by propping this killer up as some sort of martyr for socially dysfunctional nutjobs who feel their only chance at fame in life lies within the clip of a Glock 9mm pistol.

My thoughts exactly. I think it was really irresponsible for them to air it.

it would seem these psychopaths are trying to outdo each other. Sickening. The Columbine attack was, in fact, originally planned for 4/19/99. Their original plans would sicken you (it was to be very similar to 9/11/01). Screwed up people in the world...

Someone posted on one of the news blogs I go to and pointed out that NBC is the same network that won't show fans running onto the field after a football game because it might encourage that behavior at other schools' games. How many people have been killed by football fans celebrating?

I have felt very much the same way.

I feel so bad for the victims, and their families.
My brother is a VT graduate.
If this had happened a few years ago, I could be one of the grieving family members.
I just feel horrible about it all.
Sad and mad.

I know my post is late, but I was looking for this thread on Monday and could not find it. I lurk and read more than I post, but I pay attention to the avatars and screen-names. Can I just say I am really glad that Robyn and Sir Goofy are all right? I have been thinking about you guys for days now, wondering if you were okay. Please know that my prayers are with you and your friends.

Robyn - I do know where RU is, as I was accepted there. My family is from Hillsville (heck, we owned half the town at the turn of the century!) and I love the area. I did not get to go because of a family illness.

Again, it's great to know you guys are okay.

I actually rang up a girl yesterday who lives in the dorm where the first two people where shot.

Talk about having emotions hit you like a mack truck...I cried for about 10 minutes after she left.

It was just hard for me to comprehend what her and countless others were/are going through. I made myself a ribbon with Hokie colors not too long after to show my support for her and all of Tech. That school holds a place in my heart now more than ever.

It's just too damn scary...
