My daughter's been home on Spring break this week, but plans to go back to college tomorrow. I've been a wreck about letting her go back, and she's just in a small town in Maine. I can't imagine whatany of the VT students and their parents will feel when it's time to go back.

VT has been on my mind all week. I can't escape it. I feel so terrible for everyone involved. It's just been bothering me. I've been wearing a liitle black ribbon to show my respects. This is just a terrible tragedy.

Nemo14 - I hope you can feel better about your daughter going back to school. It must be hard, especially with the media going nuts like always. I hope all goes well.

Some students at VT summed up what they felt with this poster, outside one of the halls. Did anyone else see this?

Interesting message on that sign. When they interviewed the girl the other day who had also survived Columbine, that was the one thing she said should have been done differently - the media should have been asked to leave and let the students have the privacy to grieve together. Apparently they didn't listen to her.....

Good for them. I totally agree with that.

My thoughts exactly. I think it was really irresponsible for them to air it.

Erika, you are so right! The more I think about it, the angrier I get. Airing the killer's video was his final wish and NBC complied, over and over and over. And then, of course, it was distributed to all the other media outlets. Is there any wonder what the final wish of his 32 victims would be?

...and I'm sick of seeing that creep's face being flashed on the screen during every single report. Do the victims get any air time? Countless hours will be spent trying to figure out what was in that idiot's head, or what wasn't in it, and little time will be spent discussing the horror his victims felt in the last seconds of their lives.

You are not alone. I have many friends with college-age kids and all are voicing the same concerns. Some, like myself, have kids in high school and can't help but worry if these events might be the tipping point for some depressed kid hellbent on revenge and putting himself in history.

35 years later, I am abnormally startled when an engine backfires. The VT kids who were witness to the shootings will, forever, remember the sounds of the day and will instinctively respond both mentally and physically whenever they hear similar sounds. Some of these students will find it difficult to sit in class and not be distracted with every sound in the hallway or every time the door opens unexpectedly. Since there are only a few weeks left in the school year, they ought to give the kids the option of ending the semester with the grade they had as of last Friday, much like they did on many campuses after the Kent State killings in 1970.

There was an article in our newspaper yesterday about the last student to jump from the window of the room where the professor was holding the door closed. He was torn between jumping and trying to help the professor. This poor student will be haunted by this for the rest of his life. It's just not fair.

I was a sophmore in college during Kent State, and remember that whole time well. The semester just ended abruptly, and we were given the option of taking finals, or taking our grades as is. Apparently a similar offer has been given to the VT students.
I also have a high school senior, and I soooo worry about what the next 4 years will bring as he starts his career at Hofstra University. I soooooo dread September now!
