Lance Armstrong At The End Of American Adventure

But he DID obstruct the NFL's investigation into the matter, which led them to slapping him with a $50k fine. Not exactly the work of someone who is not guilty.

People do stupid things when they are accused of something. Guilty or not.

He's not a traitor, IMO. He's a legend and the Packers wouldn't be what they are today without him. GM Ted Thompson and head coach Mike McCarthy were both pressuring him to leave. You could tell in his Packers retirement speech that he didn't want to leave and wasn't ready to leave. As for the not knowing when to quit thing, he listened to his heart after the Packers retirement. He got the Jets organization into the playoff talk. And they were one game from the playoffs, so he uplifted the Jets a better coach and they would've probably been in the playoffs that year. Then he retired because of his arm injury. When he got better and started to throw the ball around again, he got the urge (and who wouldn't). Anyone who said that he was too old to play after that was crazy. His first year with the Vikings was remarkable. Maybe the best of his career. After that he was all set to be retired. Then Brad Childress sent down his best friends from the team to pressure him into coming back since they didn't have another QB at the time. Favre still said no, and then after some more pressuring he finally gave in. Favre has overcome so much in both his football life and personal life and he is my personal hero.
You not telling the whole story of Brett Favre as Packer. I have been a fan with the Packers since the 1980's. Bob Harlon,Ron Wolf, Mike Holmgren and Brett Favre was responsible for reviving the Packers Franchise.

What you forgot to mention that Brett Favre was turning a out of control Diva before 2008. Brett Favre was holding the Packers Hostage since 2003 with his will I retire or not talk. Brett even had is locker away from rest of teammates. The separate locker from rest of the team came out after Brett was traded. The local media was covering stuff on Brett before it came out once he got traded. I am saying in Wisconsin, there had Brett Favre retirement talk every season 2003 at the time Brett first retired in 2008 by the local media. It was getting tiring from a Packer fan stand point in Wisconsin. Brett's will he retire or not affected Green Bay Packers drafts and is why the Packers drafted Rodgers in 2005 once Aaron felled into the Packers laps. The Packers wanted Brett to decide if he was going to play or not in 2008 for drafting purposes.

If Brett wasn't a Diva, how do you explain he was acting like the GM of the Packers before he first retired? Brett wanted the Packers under Ted Thompson to trade players to get veteran Wide Receivers because he didn't trust the Wide Receivers Ted Thompson drafted. I am talking the same Wide Receivers that Helped the Packers go to the Super Bowl in 2010 and become champions.

One of the Players Brett Favre wanted gone was Aaron Rodgers for getting Wide Receivers that included Randy Moss. I am talking the same Aaron Rodgers that was going to the Super MVP, League MVP and the career leading NFL Passing Rating. That Meant Brett was going to screw the Packers in the future by wanting Rodgers to be traded and that means Packers would be in much worse shape now if Rodgers was traded. Brett was even giving opposing teams outside the Vikings the Packers players when he was a Viking.

The problem with Brett if he was a Packer in 2008, was the Packer's offensive line and Defense. The other issue was Aaron Rodgers was in his final season of his rookie contract after being Brett's back up for 3 years. The defense declined a lot in 2008 compare to 2007. The Offensive line of the Packers wasn't exactly great from 2008 to 2012 and that meant the Packers needed a mobile Quarterback. Brett really hasn't been the mobile since the 1990's because of his age. His arm was still there, but not the mobility. Brett for a time in the 1990's was good for rushing over 150 yards a season and that meant he was mobile despite not being the same league as a Steve Young in the 1990's. Rodgers has the big advantage in mobility compare to a 2008 Brett Favre. Rodgers proved in the Cowboys game in 2007 when he replaced an injured Favre that he was ready to be a starting Quarterback also. The way you look at that 2008 was going to be a Quarterback controversy because Brett still good enough to be a starter, but Rodgers was ready to be a starter also.

People worship the sports players too much, there are real heroes out there that save lives and improve the lives of people in this world (factory workers, doctors, nurses, teachers, researchers, etc....). I think pictures of these people would better represent America and our core values, but no one knows them because they aren't celebs. So I guess put up the "famous" ones and remember no one is perfect, and everyone makes mistakes.

I live in Wisconsin and am a Packers fan, too. I agree that Ron Wolf, Mike Holmgren, Bob Harlan, etc helped build the Packers. But the Packers wouldn't be the team they are today without him. Aaron Rodgers learned a lot from sitting behind Favre for 3 years.

I agree that Favre is sometimes arrogant and selfish, but isn't everyone? Favre just tells it like it is, and I respect him for that, even if sometimes he should keep his mouth shut.

Favre wanted Rodgers gone because he didn't want to lose his starting job. Why would any QB want to lose his job? He could've handled the situation better though, I agree. I also agree that Rodgers was the better option for us at the time. I think Favre was the right option up until 2008, I mean he did lead the Packers to the NFC Championship in 2007.

My point is that he is not the devil like people make him out to be. He was just trying to do what was best for him, as anyone should, but his personality comes off as cocky and hot headed. I think he could have handled it better, and so could the Packers organization. But you only ever heard of Favre because nobody knows who Ted Thompson is outside of the Packers community. In the end both sides did what's best for them, they just could have handled the situation better.

Favre was fun to watch and always played with a passion for the game. I will always respect that, and I will always still be a fan.

PS- There's a film out there called Last Day at Lambeau that is about Favre and his departure from Green Bay. It's very unbiased and I recommend it to any Packers fan. It makes very good points for each side. I'm not sure how anyone would get their hands on it though as it's just a local film.

There are definitely people out there who deserve to be up there, too, but heroes aren't just limited to people who save lives. People can be heroes just by the things they overcome, and they can inspire other people to be a better person. But firefighter, doctors, etc deserve at part along with the sports heroes.

So...considering recent developments surrounding cycler Lance Armstrong, I wonder how much longer he will remain in the emotional finale video of Epcot's American Adventure. Better yet, who should replace him in that shot if/when he is removed? Since Lance is now a severely tainted athlete, I say we substitute him with a legit famous American sports figure who has NOT been surrounded by negative publicity. Someone such as:
Kobe Bryant
Mark McGwire
Jerry Sandusky
OJ Simpson
Pete Rose
Bill Belichick
Ray Lewis
Sean Payton
Sammy Sosa
Roger Clemens
Michael Vick
Tonya Harding
Ben Roethlisberger
Barry Bonds
Peyton Manning

That's it...Peyton Manning should replace Lance in that spot of the film!
Your thoughts?

A blank screen and say it's Manti Te'O's girlfriend... too soon?

Maybe we could skip sporting event people and put in someone who did something unique and amazing that required intelligence, like Steve Jobs. Steve is also dead, so he won't be on the news for killing his girlfriend. :)

eta: Walter Payton was a great athlete, did a lot of good things and had a fantastic reputation. Also dead and won't be making any headlines for murdering his wife or anything.

I would like to nominate a real hero like some of the veterans that have come back from Iraq or Afganistan. Someone who gave the ultimate sacrifice so we can enjoy the freedoms we have. To beable to come on a chat forum and bi&ch about our favorite place in the whole world.

If it is to be a sports hero....How about Cal Ripken. Squeeky clean and has done so much for young people. Has written two childrens books.....actually cowrote. Millions of dollars in charity. Has his own International youth baseball league based on sportsmanship. His anthropy efforts have reach around the world. Not sure if he still is but was appointed as somekind of sports ambassador to the UN. His claim to fame was going to work everyday. Humility is his best quality....he once was asked, How would he like to be remembered? He said to be remembered at all was an honor unto itself.

Armstrong...what a jackhole. Out of TAA for sure.
But, what about "Dodgeball"?
Should he be edited out of future showings/broadcasts/DVD's/etc. of the movie as is technologically possible, or...
Peter LeFleur: "Uh, actually I decided to quit...Lance."
Lance Armstrong: "Quit? You know, once I was thinking about quitting when I was diagnosed with brain, lung and testicular cancer, all at the same time. But with the love and support of my friends and family, and the help of performance-enhancing drugs, I got back on the bike and won the Tour de France five times in a row. But I'm sure you have a good reason to quit. So what are you dying from that's keeping you from the finals?"
Peter LeFleur: "Right now it feels a little bit like...shame."
Lance Armstrong: "Well, I guess if a person never quit, while using performance-enhancing drugs, when the going got tough, they wouldn't have anything to regret for the rest of their life. But good luck to you Peter. I'm sure this decision won't haunt you forever."

Can we go yet?

I really don't care who replaces him, just get him out of there now. Not in three years, not during the next refurbishment, about now would is probably the best time to do it before it becomes too controversial.

I agree that Lance Armstrong is a controversial figure to be shown in the film. Cycling has dirty for a very long time. I rank it up there with Track Field and Baseball for most dirtiest sport that the United States has or is involved in.

Magic Johnson is in the video and all he did was get HIV for cheating on his wife. You have JFK in there and he and Marilyn Monroe were a item. People are forgiving and so athletes and celebrities in the video were love or cherished even with their indiscretions. Lance on the other hand is everything we don't want as he is not contrite in any way for what he did. The 80's Olympic Hockey team used to be in there and should be restored as they brought a country from brink of depression in 1980 and gave the whole country a reason to cheer against the then Communist Russian CCCP. To those who say Peyton Manning isn't deserving how many of those other athletes have their name on a children's hospital because of the charity work and donations given to them? Manning won a Championship with his teammates in Indy but more than anything he was pure class while here in Indy. A city and its fans were heartbroken whether we knew it was time for a change or not when Peyton left. As Colts fans we love Andrew Luck but this town is a football town now because of what #18 meant even Andrew will tell you that.
