Kids on Walt's statue

Yeah, they are OK for basic email, reminders, calendar, etc, but my phone can do all that. If I need an actual computer, the iPad doesn't meet my needs at all. I'm a financial analyst though.

My hate on the iPad is that it's so expensive and a $200 Android tablet does every single thing the iPad does and costs less than half. I'm more irritated by people bringing iPads or any tablet to the parks and using them incorrectly. iPad happens to irritate me more because I think it's so overpriced and people try to argue that it is just as good as a laptop.
Can we leave the ipad vs laptop / techie debate to another thread, and rather focus on the DOLT parents that let their kids walk all over things, and give themselves a sense of self-entitlement that is going to be the downfall of that generation.

But don't you understand? Their kids WANTED to do that and with today's parents that supersedes rules, manners, respect, and common decency. Plus, don't forget they paid a lot of money for their vacation and, of course, that means they should get to do WHATEVER they want, despite rules, manners, respect, and common decency.

Agree...it has been the downfall of America since the 90s. However, the sense of entitlement and RIGHT NOW attitude has been largely a product of the techie lives we lead today. No more waiting with nothing to do. Everything has to be instant and with a cell phone or tablet in your hand, checking your stupid Facebook to see if you got any new "likes" or playing a useless game on your phone.

I have a rule, no iphones at dinner. This goes for my friends and not just my family. I am 40, and I tell all my friends that if we are going out to dinner, I want to talk to them, not have them text me while sitting next to me. Nothing worse than a nice night out and seeing 6 adults looking at a phone, much like teenagers.

My kids are only allowed the smart devices and computers after they have read for at least 30 minutes a day, and all home work is done. And even then, I have parental timers on them. Luckily though, for the most part, my kids would rather be outside than inside using these things. I do encourage my kids to use the devices for more than games and texting. My girls tend to make movies with their ipods, it's great fun for them, and gets them moving, not just sitting and staring at the screen.

I find it hilariously ironic that this post got "likes"! Bahahahaha! But I totally agree! Instant gratification is like a virus that leads to a dysfunction, which is the sense of entitlement. The sense of entitlement is only worsened by the whole "let's give 'em a trophy for everything!!" attitude, which personally makes me sick.

I see people my age being parents and I cringe. Apparently, nobody knows how to say no.

Something I read, I'm not sure where I read it from. I think the comment section for yahoo, which is always interesting. But supposedly, a class in grade school were giving the number for child services. And I guess the kid and parent were somewhere where the parent said no, that they weren't getting anything and the kid threatened to call child services.

This is an interesting perspective. I don't necessarily agree with most of it but it was an interesting read. I was born in the 70s and have never, ever liked or related to the y-generation label.

I am very old school strict parent. I don't put up with much bull. If my kids need praise I praise them if they messed up I tell them strait I am not pleased. Why sugar coat it? They are not any more special than your child (well to me they are) but you get my meaning right? Every child is special to their parent but not necessarily to the next door neighbour.

I think the "change" with parenting started with that big purple dinosaur and a generation that thinks everything kids do is great, fantastic, wonderful, you should get a metal even though you are the worst little brat on the face of the planet.

I personally love this speech

YES! THANK you! How anyone doesn't see something wrong with that picture is beyond me. I am glad your boys know better.
Yeah. It'd be a very ugly scene if mine did something like that. I'm sure we'd earn a whole thread here about how I abused my kids by calling them out in front of God & everybody, likely pulled off a flip flop to whack 'em (as if it'd even hurt considering they're both bigger than me), and made them apologize to all the guests & CMs present before marching their butts back out the gates. LOL! My oldest son swears he never wants children because the kids he sees in the public are often so awful. LOL! It does amaze me that anyone can look at that pic and think its no big deal. Its a very big deal. That's exactly why things can't be nicer and more detailed.

I have to agree. Should my boys think they're the center of MY universe? Yes! I'm their mother. Should they think they're the center of THE universe? No. That would be a very gross misconception. My world revolves around them but they are participants in the rest of the world. If they thought the world revolved around them that would be very inaccurate and would set them up for a lifetime of disappointment when they find out that's not the way life works.

Just because they weren't hanging from Walt's outstretched arm doesn't mean it's okay. Imagine if one of those kids took a tumble? Somehow the parents then would blame Disney for their lack of parenting. The fence is there for a purpose - to keep people off the statue. Shame on those parents for not properly policing their kids - both for the safety of their children and the enjoyment of other guests. I'm so tired of the "entitlement" attitude of some people. I just got back on Tuesday and the South American tour groups of 50-100 teenagers invasion.

Makes me wish we could hunt them... kinda like someone suggested in that Tour Group Season thread.

They were annoying at the least and I did my best to avoid the rides they headed to. But what ed me off was one group of 50-60 girls marching up Main Street from the Emporium all the way to the Hub, chanting, clapping, singing, pushing other guests out of the way (they weren't single file, but spread out over almost the entire width of the street) during the 4th of July celebration. And I wasn't the only guest appalled at their behavior during the celebration of our Independence. If looks could kill.... And all of the groups showed up at HS the same day.

Its all about respect, respect for others, respect for property, people have a mentality, I paid for this trip I'm entitled to trash, break or take a piece of anything I see and ruin the day, evening, or anyone else's trip for my personal enjoyment.

People need to get over themselves and learn how to behave and loose this sense of entitlement about everything.

If the parks weren't getting trashed by a guests they might actually give us something nice for nice change.

In complete agreement. How many policy changes has Disney had to make because some people thought they were entitled and thus took advantage? Wouldn't it be nice to be able to go straight from a park to DTD and vice versa? But because people took advantage of the free parking at DTD, no more. And all the changes to ADRs made recently because some people had to book every single restaurant in a park on the same night. And finally, the changes to ride access for people with special needs because rich folks took advantage of that pass. The next will be scanning MBs when getting on a bus to make sure you are REALLY staying at a Disney hotel - imagine how that will backlog riding buses.

I purchased some DVC merchandise at my resort and had to show my member card before the cashier would ring up the purchase. When I asked why (I understand showing my AP & ID to get that discount, but...), he said that people will buy a DVC t-shirt or some other DVC merchandise and then show it later to try and get the DVC discount. I wasn't asking for a DVC discount.....using my AP discount. Sigh....

Now, let's put a little twist on my thread? As the children decide to come down off the statue and walk across the grass and trample the flowers they proceed to step over the fence surrounding Walt's statue it's dark, hard to see and with that little Johnny catches his foot, falls to the ground and breaks his wrist.
What do you think little Johnny's mom and dad will do next?

THINK THEY'VE WON THE LOTTERY AND SUE DISNEY!!!!!. Which means the statue will now have an 8 foot fence around it with razor wire on top and signs about trespassing. The things CMs have to tell people not to do purely for safety, i.e., the avoidance of litigation, is insane....Like telling a group of cheerleaders performing stunts on the concrete around the statue to stop so they didn't hurt themselves or other guests when they fell. Had to tell them twice and it only worked when she (1) threatened to have them thrown out of the MK and more importantly (2) it would cause them to be kicked out of the completion.

Fantastic recommendation for reading. As a member of Gen X, I see this everywhere. Just talked to a programmer today that I want to keep on my team. He currently works from home, but the new contract requires that he work from the office. I asked today if this is going to be a problem. He seems to think that he is so special that he can leave this job and try to find another that will pay as well and allow him to work from home. I wished him luck and let him know that he won't be on the contract in 60 days.

I supervised an employee who thought nothing of taking off an ENTIRE day to have her hair braided. Isn't that what weekends are for? Or the employee who waltzes into my office late on Thursday to say she's taking off Friday to clean her house because her in-laws are coming into town. Which she has known for weeks. I could type volumes about the lack of work ethics exhibited by millennials.....
