One thing this would jive with is Disney's original press release, which said there would be track replacement.

I've seen a few people mention a press release, but to the best of my knowledge, Disney have never released a press release regarding SM.
Everything I have had is on http://www.wdwmagic.com/Attractions/Space-Mountain/News.htm, and I don't have anything along the lines of a press release. Disney have been extremely quiet on this, basically treating it like any other refurb where there arent any significant changes.

A new replacement track is exactly one of the key things needed to make this refurb of Space Mountain something worthwhile. I'm glad to see it's somewhat confirmed, and I'm hoping even more secrets can be revealed soon. :)

Same here. At least in some form, even background audio. :)

Eh, speakers in the dome were an epic fail before.

I want onboard. I know we aren't getting it, but there's nothing like riding a coaster with perfectly synced audio to the track. And no, I'm not talking about RNRC, because that audio isn't synced at all.

Not trying to battle you, but in doing a quick search, I just read 2 Sentinel articles from April/Jun that quoted Disney as originally saying there would be track replacement with same layout.

I specifically remember the original release. Because when it came out, we were all speculating whether "track replacement" meant all the track, or just portions.

I know this is not an Disney press release but may have been one of the stories that gave hope of a track change.

It would make sense because everyone was wondering why they were just now getting around to the simple maintenance things like painting and what not

Don't get me wrong, a true track replacement may have occured, but I doubt it. This "track replacement" probably goes along with something I had mentioned in a previous post: new wheel bogies for the trains. I think what we are looking at here is the replacement of all the track rail supports along the track. It is easier to illustrate so here is my crude drawing.

The "new" approach is more in line with modern roller coaster track and allows true up-stop wheels instead of the angled ones on the old wheel assemblies. Theoretically this could allow a tighter tolerance for the wheels on the track giving a "smoother" ride since there could be less play in the up-stops. It may not be the case with SM so time will tell...
