The structural issue rumor about Horizons (usually it being built on a sinkhole which is not true) has been debunked numerous times. The ride simply lost the sponsor, and pretty much immediately after that loss they began to operate it seasonally. They even had a big upgrade planned for it (like SSE 94) but they finally got a new sponsor that demanded a new attraction instead. The building for Horizons was extremely sturdy and apparently built to withstand hurricanes or anything else that would cause the supposed damage people claim it had (said to have been extremely tough to demolish). That false information needs to stop.

It is actually the UoE building that is build on or around a sinkhole, and they are actually reusing it for GOTG.

I just stumbled upon this

Wow..that was terrific!
How have I missed seeing this gem all these years..?

There is a ton of material shown in the background during the shots where Dreamfinder is running through WED / WDI ....I spotted many pieces of the Original 'Journey Into Imagination' Attraction among other bits.

A few things I noticed -

Backgrounds from JII and even one from 'Horizons' ( the beautifully futuristic 'apartment view' background )
Various set pieces and props.
One of the several AA Figments.
One of the 'walkaround' puppet Figments being cycled around by a Imagineer as if playing the role of 'E.T.' in one scene.
The rainbow waterfall lighting effect ( from the 'Realm of Art' intro scene ) is shown set up in test mode in one quick shot.
The front 'scoop' from of the flying machines is carried by.
Recognizable lighting effect units can also be seen in one shot.

Wow.
What a neat little film!
Ron is just a 'kid' in this...it was that long ago.

Edison was a stubborn narcissist who hated any brilliant ideas that weren't his own. He stifled dreams with lawyers or, failing that, thugs. The reason the movie industry is out in California is that that is as far away from Edison's New Jersey as you could get without falling into the sea.
So he was a normal person?

I wonder what that bunny figurine seen between 1:23 between another Figment was located at one of the attractions at WDW?

It is baffling to me that they did not just build the Space pavilion next to Horizons... there is plenty of room for expansion without taking out a pavilion to do it... So sad that we lost an amazing legacy attraction for a half-realized pavilion. If GOTG moved anywhere, it would make more sense for it to be into the Space pavilion and let the ride be just the beginning of the overall experience that takes you to another galaxy.....arrive at an actual destination instead of an arcade game and climbing structure with a secondary attraction , and you have a more complete pavilion experience...

Really?? I've been living my life a lie. So whose bright idea was it to demolish Horizons??

Yeah, it makes me wonder what we'd be complaining about right now for Westcot had it been built
Yeah, I remember Eisner deliberately had Long Beach and Anaheim fighting over Westcot or DisneySea and had two imagineering teams assigned to the projects, with the idea of building just one for the city that offers Disney the most in tax incentives. Well, none won, but Anaheim did get something totally different and much less grandiose.

Wasn't the original Ray Bradbury Space pavilion planned to replace it? I think that would have used the original building and omnimover ride system and Omnimax tunnels as well.

I remember a Disney executive at the time saying that Horizons did a survey at the end of the ride and people choose space more often than the other options and therefore space wins.

As to GOTG, am I the only one longing to see Google, Facebook, Tesla Motors, SpaceX, Apple as EPCOT sponsors?

Everyone except Facebook, which is widely considered obsolete in social media circles. I know that sounds outrageous, but it is losing its priority in communications.

Unbelievable.... Thank you for clearing this up, the fact that they let a well-loved ride just die off like that disgusts me.

Good luck on stopping it as there is at least one ABANDONED vid that showcases this fact, including satelite images that show images that strangely look like a depression in the sand. another image with a metal wall is shown with depiction of support during demolition.
I am not an expert on sink holes but it was interesting when one showed up at a resort and took a condo down so it isn't like it can't happen.

also the rumour of the concern about the attraction having stess on the building structure did not come up with the building roof concerns, it was before this time. It just seems that there is a chronological history that points in a damaged building direction and as the building seems to have a very SUBSTANTIAL cost to build, it just seems odd that DISNEY would take such a large space down if there were nothing wrong with it. Then again in retrospect, they did destroy Pleasure Island and 20,000 Leagues and Journey.

I'm not saying you are wrong or that I am wrong, just repeating the vids.

And everytime it's "debunked," I chime in to say my dad was on the Horizons maintenance team and documented structural damage. He was an electrical engineer so isn't qualified to say what caused it or how bad it was. But he did tell me when they closed it down the first time the whole ride was supposed to get a refurb and the damage repaired. The team got reassigned to other areas (that's how he ended up at Maelstrom) and the refurb never happened.
