Jasmine's new look

I began reading this thread backwards just because it was too amusing. But I finally got to the pics. ? The quality is so poor. Worse than Party City. More like what comes in a big dress-up trunk from Toys R Us. Should've just gone to Macy's and bought a cheap leftover prom dress like I did for my MNSSHP costume, because why the heck not at this point. Sad that that would look miles better. The Disney Store children's costume looks miles better.

I agree that they could have attractively covered her midriff if so desired. And kept it looking like the movie. But if somebody seriously cannot keep their hands to themselves at the sight of a woman's tummy, they can be escorted away. It will be better for us all.

The idea of historically accurate princesses is actually interesting to me. But for it to make any sense, some marketing would need to be involved. You'd almost have to create a whole additional line so the characters could be quasi recognizable. Perhaps if there was set of dolls and merch already available and it was pushed that they would be meeting in this outfit at Epcot, it would seem more like an attempt to be educational rather than just PC.

All of the princess '98 and earlier went through a redesign, Jasmine is the last one of the series. During the redesign process, Poca, Mulan, and Jasmine were reevaluated as these princesses represent specific ethnicities and cultures. Instead of sticking to the movie animations, the designer studied time periods and spoke with experts to ensure they were representing these ladies correctly.

When my 3 year old daughter, with tan skin, brown eyes, and brown curly hair, saw THIS MOANA trailer and said, "Mommy, that's me," I was quickly reminded how little girls see themselves in these characters. If more young girls are able to see themselves in Jasmine because she better represents them, then I don't care what anyone says about her new look - quite honestly, most of us are not the target audience for the change.

The discussions about performer comfort, complaints to Disney, safety, etc... are not the reasons the costume was changed. Those are simply internet rumors & gossip (though the situations described do/did happen). There are no changes coming for Ariel or Tarzan.

I just showed my daughter a photo of the new costume - she had no problem identifying that it was Jasmine in less than 5 seconds - and she's 3.
Well I showed it to a whole Sunday school class of 5 and six year olds, about 45 kids total and only 1 knew who it was and that 1 was not happy. Kids want the characters they saw in the movie, not some weird cheap burka lookin thing. At least Mulan and Pocahontas still look like Mulan and Pocahontas and their outfits don't look like it came from the Dollar Tree like Jasmines does. They have to stay true to the characters, and her bangs hanging out of the wig totally not Disney. It would be like all the sudden Disney decides to have big six foot rats running around because they want mickey to look more authentic.

Those are not her bangs hanging out of the wig. That is actually part of the wig.

But yeah this new costume is terrible.

and let's face it, the real reason for the change is the marketing and consumer goods department...they probably found it cheaper to make the princess dresses on this model than actually make them different with harem pants, so like Mulan, the character will slowly morph into a princess dress because that is what they want to sell in the gift shops...sad.. it has gotten so blatant.

and the only thing that tips you off on who the character is, is that she is standing next to Genie... I do love how the belt matches Aurora's so when they make the children's costumes they can use the same accessory piece... cheaper overall to manufacture...

Sadly for them if that's the case they have failed because every little girl I know that has seen it hates it, so they sure are not going to want one for themselves.

I don't think they are trying to appeal to girls who will want it, I think they are trying to appeal to the adults who will pay for it. I think Jasmine's new look resembles or mirrors the Disney Store costume linked to above.

If my daughter was not asking for it I wouldn't buy it, and I don't know many parents who would.

When they made over Cinderella, I didn't like it at all, but apparently it sold well enough, so that's why I'm thinking that this will too. Maybe this look did well in focus groups?

ETA: To make more $$$ seems like the only logical explanation to me for them to invest in this makeover.

All of the face characters' outfits look cheaply made IMO, but I've always thought that they look like that because they purposely use thin water-proof fabrics so that the friends don't sweat too much during the day or get too wet when random Florida rains come. Or am I wrong and they just make cheap outfits? o_OJasmine's new look isn't horrible, but I think it'll take longer getting used to it because of how different it is compared to the other princess changes.

My question in this whole thing is why everyone is flipping out now when Snow White's Prince, Prince Philip, and Aurora were trotted out for years in even worse costumes than this?

I've always disliked Phillip's costume, and have said that here before. It looks like the new one will be much better.

Most of these new Princess dresses have been improvements on the original. Aurora in particular. Jasmine's redesign appears to be the only one that's really awful (both in terms of film accuracy and overall appearence).

... than actually make them different with harem pants...

?
She's still wearing pants.

Here's a photo of her kneeling (ALADDIN):

Because this is the thread about Jasmine's look.
I get that but everyone is talking about this like it's the end of the world. Yes the costume is hideous. Yes it should be burned in a firey inferno but guess what. It probably will and if it proves extremely unpopular with the population at large, it'll change. That said, it could have been much worse and there's a good idea hiding in there.
