Is the angler fish effect in Nemo new?

I've been going on this ride since '08 (multiple times - it's my daughter's favorite) and I never noticed the angler fish moving before. I rode it on March 9th and the Angler fish surprised all of us (and frighten my daughter). It was moving around and there was some sort of steam (or smoke) coming out as well. I really don't remember this! I only remember the fish being there - not moving! It may have moved in and out (if it moved at all) but never like this before!

Is this new? Something that has always been broken?

Either way, it's a pretty cool effect!

It isn`t the best advertisment for a Kuka arm. 3rd shift hate it. It used to go down so often a black curtain was installed to draw across when it broke so it could be fixed.

An example of the wrong type of equipment being specced for the wrong type of application.

I think you are just very unlucky as out of all the time's I've ridden it the only time I've not seen it work was the very first time I rode during cast previews. And even then it worked the second time I rode just a few hours later.

The Kuka technology is great, but it breaks down quite frequently (not only the anglerfish at Nemo but also with Sum of All Thrills). I find it interesting that the new Harry Potter ride at Universal is going to utilize this technology just because it is so unreliable, but I digress.

I really hope that it wasn't smoke that you saw because its definitely not suppose to do that. Also, I have never seen a black curtain that can be drawn across the anglerfish when it is not working, but it can be put into B-mode. However, there is protective netting between the anglerfish and the ride vehicles just in case something goes wrong with the Kuka.

I've had good luck with the Angler fish on recent trips. They still need to fix the charging shark, I've never seen that work correctly. I think The Seas with Nemo and Friends is an underrated attraction, but much like all the other things lately, it's contingent on all the effects working.

Chum hasn't moved much since the ride was in previews, and most likely probably won't again, unless something has changed. Apparently they deemed the angler fish effect so frightening, that they didn't want guests to turn the corner and have a shark suddenly lurch out at them. So now he only moves a tiny bit (still makes a lot of noise though...).

Has anybody got a video or photo of this effect?

I guarantee that the couple behind us last time we rode has a video of it. The video camera spotlight should have gotten them great video - really ruins the effect when you can clearly see the arm behind the fish....and the wall...and the door...

I've rarely seen this effect down, and we've been using our AP's A LOT since they expire in April, and we're not sure if we can afford to renew them. I did notice the netting. I kind of figured it was a KUKA arm (what else could it be?) just by the motion.

Don't you just love it when people assume that the rules apply to everyone else except them?

"Oh, they won't mind if I use MY light on the video camera."

The worst one for me is when they do this on The Little Mermaid show at HS.

Take care,

The effect is so awesome! It's nice to see this unique and probably quite expensive effect you'll see for may 5 seconds in a C/D ticket ride. :)

while it is an awsome effect, Martin does make a interesting point, with an attraction thats full of video screens and minor props the angler fish kuka arm seems out of place,

It's almost as if WDI's research division had money and a prototype arm that Robocoaster gave them to play with and said hey lets test the concept here. I love it when it works, when it is down it doesn't ruin the story much at all so it's not missing much.

It's really new tech in the way it's being used and may have lots of minor bugs to work out.

It's been about 50 / 50 for me. Granted that I've only ridden it maybe 4 times though....

Yep, last time I was on it I had the family in front use their flash CONSTANTLY. Every couple of seconds the whole area was lit up bright and you could see everything. I didn't really mind as I've seen it 'unspoiled' before but if that was my first ride, I would have been very annoyed.

The worst thing is that they spent so long taking pictures, they didn't get to enjoy the ride and all their photos will show everything that's supposed to be hidden and basically make the ride look pretty cheap.

I don't get why so many people take photos on this ride :brick:. The video screens get all lit up from the flashes and the effects get ruined, I wish people had a little self control with flash and cameras. I agree its annoying.

Thanks!

Is it broke a lot... or have I just been very unlucky? This is honestly the first time I saw the fish like that!

We were just there in late February and it wasn't working, but that's the first time for us and we've ridden it dozens of times since it was opened. But then I've never seen the Yeti in full-on mode either!!

Been reading ahead to the flash/video light sidebar and I have to say I noticed it this last visit more than ever. Not only did the three folks in front of me on POTC flash away at every scene (their first time maybe??), but at one point the Mom of the group turned around and took a picture, blinding me in in the process! Not sure if it was my un-Disney-like reaction, but they stopped taking pictures!
