yep Matterhorn and Fuji would have been part of World Showcase's skyline, or could have been. sigh.
Have not walked through this building in the last ten trips. It was horrible and boring!
EPCOT has always been somewhat at the mercy of its sponsors, especially early on. There's so many attractions that were proposed but never built due to budget issues or the wishes of the host countries.
• A bullet train ride in Japan and/or a Mt Fuji ride where you encounter Godzilla (!)
• A Spain pavilion with a boat ride
• A Rhine river cruise in Germany
• Yet another river cruise down the Thames in the UK pavilion
• A Swiss pavilion with a Matterhorn ride
• An Equatorial African pavilion with a virtual visit to Africa hosted by Alex Haley (where the Outpost drink area is now)
Thank you! The concept art on that page is fantastic. To add, here's a good article from Werner Weiss about the World Showcase:

Though, to be fair, if they'd built all of those attractions, WS would be known as "the boat ride area"Dreams of what could have been... -sigh-
The UK had an AA theatre show to fall back on, and Japan also had a Carousel show.Though, to be fair, if they'd built all of those attractions, WS would be known as "the boat ride area"
You forget about the gondola dark ride and a Roman ruins walk-through that was planned for Italy.EPCOT has always been somewhat at the mercy of its sponsors, especially early on. There's so many attractions that were proposed but never built due to budget issues or the wishes of the host countries.

Wow, neat, I'd heard about the gondola ride (BOATS!!) but hadn't heard about the Roman ruins. I've always thought Italy was one of the weakest areas. You forget about the gondola dark ride and a Roman ruins walk-through that was planned for Italy.
Crying shame they couldn't pull together either the financing or sponsorships for those projects (or any others that didn't come to fruition)....The UK had an AA theatre show to fall back on, and Japan also had a Carousel show.
There again Costa Rica had a boat ride and the revision of Africa had a Rapids ride.
EPCOT Center has more unbuilt proposals that came so close to being real than all of WDWs other parks put together. And that's just post 1979.Crying shame they couldn't pull together either the financing or sponsorships for those projects (or any others that didn't come to fruition)....
And that in of itself is the most unfortunate fact....EPCOT Center has more unbuilt proposals that came so close to being real than all of WDWs other parks put together. And that's just post 1979.
In this book, they talk about the ruins as definitely happening (IIRC), so they were even "announced". Sad that we didn't get them. You forget about the gondola dark ride and a Roman ruins walk-through that was planned for Italy.
Is EPCOT in danger of being gutted and turned into a regular theme park? There is a lot of room in world showcase for meet and greets (example Frozen in Norway)Though, to be fair, if they'd built all of those attractions, WS would be known as "the boat ride area"
I wonder what sponsorship in WS has lapsed or close to being up for renewal? Norway stopped sponsorship and that gave Disney the wiggle room to put in the Frozen attraction and meet / greetTo add, here's a good article from Werner Weiss about the World Showcase:

Wow some really interesting and fun facts about WS in this thread. Great link, thanks for sharing!
I wish someone higher up in Disney could shed some light on the financial requirements for the possibilities of ever adding some of these pavillions or attractions. Is the investment too much nowdays to justify building these ideas without corporate sponsorships? What if Disney could get sponsors on board, could they proceed? It seems like at some point ( mid 1980s) they just decided that WS is good enough as it is and left it at that.
Not in the slightest. The rides that were talked about up there were all proposed back in the late 70s and early 80s and never built. Pretty much all of the lands in WS do plenty of meet & greets and cultural shows: Aladdin & Jasmine in Morocco, Mary Poppins and Pooh in the UK, Brother Bear in Canada, etc.Is EPCOT in danger of being gutted and turned into a regular theme park?
