Inferno Barge Missing From Illuminations

Was the previous refub just a band-aid to limp through the busy holiday period and they're really fixing it this time or are they changing the show? Any other possibilities? Anyone know?

^ I was under the impression a lot of infrastructure was replaced during the post ALF incident rehab.

NOW is the time for lots of Chaos laser video ;)

I was walking through the world showcase when that happened. I've never in my life heard such a loud boom. It shook everything.

I think you're confusing the Inferno Barge with the Earth Globe.

Earth Globe was out of the show for a few weeks last fall for an overhaul of the video screens. (And unfortunately it was out for my entire trip, and returned the evening of the day I flew home)

The Inferno Barge is what is now out of the show and under refurb. And as Martin said, it seems odd that it'll be out of the show for so long, because I had gotten the impression from an Imagineer who posts online occasionally that virtually the entire fire infrastructure had been replaced in the post-ALF-accident repairs. And that was barely 3 years ago.

I'll have to see if they have any comments on this new refurb.

I'm hoping.....

I'm hoping that the 6 month estimate is exagerated so that when it comes back earlier, people are happy! This way if something slows down the process, it isn't out longer than the estimated time. I'm really surprised that it could really be out for a whole 6 months! So much for "feeling the heat" on my next trip. :(

Seriously...Hope it's back in late summer.

Hope I get to go to WDW, while I'm at it.

Also, why would this take so long? Are they totally rebuilding it?

I haven't gotten a reply from someone I know who is a pyro tech for the show yet but someone suspected that the fuel lines are being cleaned and valves being replaced.

I wouldn't think so. If it were just valves and cleaning the lines, I'd say it would take no more than a couple weeks. *Replacing* all the lines (which is a LOT more complex than replacing nozzles) took 5 months...

How so? You would think it's like the same thing.

I'm tempted to believe the cost-saving theory, but it seems odd to me that they would have the barge off all Summer, too--I would have thought if it were just for money-saving, the barge would conveniently return Memorial Day weekend. I hope this doesn't take the full 6 months since I haven't seen IllumiNations since 2006 (me being selfish), but if it does, it does. IllumiNations is still great without the fire in Chaos.

Well, in the refurb after the accident, they had to re-run cabling and gas piping. I can't imagine just how many miles of cable and gas lines there are on that thing, snaking every which way.

Though I admit it's an over-simplified example, re-doing the gas lines would be like stripping out all the electrical wiring in your house back to the fuse box, and re-running it. Replacing just the gas nozzles would be like replacing all of the wall outlets and switches. The cable is run, they just need to swap out what's at the end of them.

I'd also think that if it were just nozzle replacement, they could be replaced in the off-hours one or two at a time so that over the course of a month or two they'd all get swapped out.

All I know is I have seen the show hundreds of time and last week was an embarrassment ... just awful ... and not simply from not having the barge.

So much pyro was missing, other was clearly cheaper/inferior product and much of it was out of synch with the soundtrack.

I've never seen it like that ...

OK, I got a response from the insider via another public forum...

The six-month figure is apparently a gross over-estimate, but they wanted to cover themselves in case anything unexpected croped up during the work that has to be done. They're *hoping* it will be done by the end of March.

The refurb itself was unplanned, and was originally to repair/replace a few things that needed work ASAP. Once the barge was out of the show, they decided to do some upgrades, including some new and improved gas jets and possible infrastructure additions for a "rumored future show".

Also mentioned were additional bounce mirrors around the Lagoon for the lasers.

It's time to completely change the show anyway. Once they start slacking on quality and quantity it's generally a sign of apathy.

apathy or a horrible economic situation? I don't begrudge Disney the cutbacks, myself (provided everything is reinstated once the economy improves, which I know is often not the case).
