Agree, mission impossible has everything going for it.
1. Amazing reviews
2. Movie had a true star that gets butts in the seats.
3. Last Cruise movie(Maverick)crushed it at the box office.
4. Mission impossible series hasn’t had a bad film and the last film in 2018 wasn’t that long ago so
Should have great momentum going in.
5. Cruise knows his audience and caters to that.

If this movie doesn’t work… Hollywood is in trouble.
I wouldn't say Hollywood is in trouble if MI:7 under performs. It means the landscape has changed, and streaming is a bigger factor than most realize or want to admit. So adjustments need to be made to expectations regarding BO long term as the industry changes to a streaming dominated world.

Other issue, its a part one of two. Are people going to want to see this one now and then wait a year to see the conclusion, or rather just wait and watch both next year.

I believe that is the ultimate direction.
convenience plays a big part. Easier to watch a film at home and there is solid entertainment on the small screen like Witcher, Silo, Ted Lasso.
Also very expensive to drive to theater and buy tickets, food, drinks for family of 4.
But I still feel people want a solid tent pole and family film.
Mario, Spider-Man, Maverick, guardians.
Give the audience what they want and they show up.
That said, my 11 year old girls have zero interest in going to the movies. I have to drag them to it. They enjoy the theater but would rather be on iPad watching YouTube videos or playing roblocks.

They do want to see Barbie though.
Took them to Mermaid. They said original is better.
Took them to Indy. They said they didn’t hate it but wasn’t as good as the old movies (Indy) I make them watch. Haha… Dad did the same thing to me.

Yes
Can someone explain this to me? Where did this Sound of Freedom movie come from? I had never heard of it until I went to look at the box office numbers for July 4th, but it debuted yesterday (very odd timing) and beat Indy by $3 Million.

I haven't seen advertising for Sound of Freedom, or if I did I tuned it out because it seems a rather serious and dark toned movie, which I rarely like. (I'm more of a Barbie person, especially in summer). And I've never heard of Angel Studios. And in only 2,600 theaters?

Wow. Okay. That makes sense I'd never heard of it until today, as I'm not a regular church-goer and often these independent religious films get word of mouth going in American churches. I get it now, but I had no idea what the movie was a few hours ago.

Fascinating, really. Good for them for getting this movie produced and out there and beating Indy 5 at the box office.

David vs. Goliath, to continue the religious theme. ;)

Saw it this weekend. It is an extremely enjoyable film. It’s an Indiana Jones movie and contains everything that it needs to contain to be an Indiana Jones movie. Action. Adventure. Great chase sequences. Suspense. An amazing John Williams score. Etc. etc. The previous one was horrendous but this one redeems the franchise. I don’t understand the hatred or the gloating from all the usual suspects but then again, I don’t understand the hatred and the gloating from all the usual suspects on any number of threads here.
I enjoyed the last Indy film. It misses the humor and charm of original films and Spielberg’s camera. Plays as a straight action adventure movie and it’s fun… but I wish we had the humor and there aren’t any memorable moments and I think that’s why it only got the b+ score.

Sounds like you work for Disney…. Zero clue about what sells a film. Zero clue about target market.
look at mission impossible…. Getting crazy reviews. Tracking for a huge opening.
Disney looks at Indy franchise and says, “let’s get phoebe waller-bridge to bring in the girls and young adults and then give her the franchise”. What??? Why?
she was solid but she doesn’t sell tickets.

Chris Pratt gets butts in the seats.
Because Cruise is an action star who 1) had a massive star vehicle hit last year and 2) does his own crazy stunts which have become his trademark.

Pratt is amusing and has a glibness that’s appealing. But a period action piece doesn’t make sense.

The reason M:I is going to do gangbusters is in large part because Cruise has figured out how to sell these pictures via their set pieces. It’s smart and shows he’s a smart entertainer, but unfortunately for theater owners there’s only one of him and there’s fifty two weeks in a year.

I disagree and that is fine. I thought it had plenty of humor and memorable moments.

This movie is going to be almost three hours long. That worked for Avatar. We’ll see how it works here, particularly since this is “part one” and apparently there will be no resolution at the end.

What was the laugh out loud moment for you?
What scene matched moments from the original trilogy for you?
I enjoyed the film and I recommend Indy fans seeing it in the theater. It felt like a solid 1970s bond film.
The ending was cool.

Not to keep discussing MI and Cruise, but he is 61 as of the 3rd. So how many more of these "I'm gonna do my own stunts" movies does he have left in him. Its already starting to get hard to find insurance companies willing to insure his films when he does his own stunts. So I have a feeling after MI:8 he is probably going to go cut back on the action movies since he refuses to use a stunt double.

I wasn’t looking for laugh out loud moments: I knew I was going through an Indiana Jones movie and not a Mel Brooks movie. Off the top of my head I don’t recall laugh out loud moments from the previous films either. I said it had plenty of humor. Wasn’t talking about laugh out loud moments. I agree that the ending was cool.

A Indy movie is an action/comedy. It always has been.
There are a ton of funny moments in original
Trilogy. It’s the funny that sold the movies.
Examples:
1.When Hitler signs the grail book in crusade.
2. “No tickets” scene on blimp
From crusade.
3. “We are going to die” temple of doom scene.
4. X marks the spot from crusade.
5. Shot the sword man’s scene from raiders.
I mean… tons of comedy made the Indians Jones franchise.
It’s the scenes everyone talks about.

I enjoyed Dial of Destiny but it didn’t have the iconic moments of original trilogy… ending was solid though.

I don’t know why you are arguing with me if we both enjoyed the movie. The last time I dared to argue with someone on here, the mods gave me a delightful one week ban. I’m not doing that crap again.

Agreed…I saw this yesterday…I also don’t understand the harsher critic reviews…I rewatched the other Indiana Jones films to get hyped and it fits right in with what you expect from Indiana Jones…. As far as the hatred here…none of those that are complaining watched the movie…like always

I’m trying to figure out why no one went to see a 300 million dollar classic franchise.

I enjoyed the film, I’m also 50…. The 20-30 year olds didn’t show up.
Everyone my age went.

I noticed most of the comedy you remember is from The Last Crusade…which focused more on humor….I would say the humor in this one fit in with the first 2 however

Without going into spoilers… the very ending of the film was perfect and had me smiling

7. opening act diamond/antidote floor sequence.
