Hey people in the thread liked the movie!!

That means it no longer matters how much money it loses.

Someone phone Iger so he can stop drinking!

Maybe it means we should look at the issue beyond the limited scope of "everything Iger and/or Lucasfilm does is bad".

They made an Indy movie that has been generally well received by audiences.

So what did go wrong? Marketing? People don't want 80 year old action heroes?

Were people unwilling to forgive Crystal Skull? Why don't people have more faith in a series that delivered 3 out of 4 times?

Is the movie too different? Should they just have remade Raiders as that worked for things like The Force Awakens and Maverick?

The problems are much deeper than that.

I’m not going to get into it because I don’t feel like answering 24 questions of “What do you mean by that exactly” from the Pixie Dust Police.

Imagine if you googled "Oreos" and every link on the first page were near identical thumbnails with red glowing eyes and sensationalized headlines proclaiming evil falsehoods about the latest flavor. Imagine that going on for years.

Yeah, it all seems to mirror politics and use outrage to get clicks.

I don’t mind film criticism like the CinemaSins videos because you can tell they like movies and a lot of what they say is tongue in cheek.

They find things legitimately wrong with movies but it doesn’t feel angry.

Final raw numbers are in from this past weekend. Yikes. 🥴

Adjusted for inflation, Indy 5 did 41% of the box office in its domestic opening weekend than Indy 4 did.

Indy 5 has also simultaneously opened in all of its overseas markets last Friday, so there's no more countries left to open in.
Compared to Indy 4, the overseas numbers are similarly weak for Indy 5.

So here's the thing about Kathleen Kennedy and the way she handles old IPs: she takes the IP's old characters, that everyone loved, and she destroys them in the most pathetic, pitiable way possible. Look what she did to Star Wars: She broke up Han and Leia, had Han killed by his own son, and turned Luke into an old bitter teat-sucking intergalactic hobo. She did that in hopes that the audience reaction would be: oh well, I guess those characters weren't all that anyway, and THEN she waves the replacements in their faces: "Yeah, forget those old guys - look, here's some shiny new characters! Shiny! Shiny!" And of course the audience is supposed to like the new characters as much as they did the old. Because that's how stupid she is. Her method is so cynical, graceless, clumsy and predatory that it makes me want to barf. And now she's done the same destructive thing to Indiana Jones. Killed off characters, broken up relationships, and inserted an obnoxious Mary-Sue into the mix. Is there any doubt that Feeble was supposed to be the star of a new Indy franchise, starring her as a veritable Indiana Jane? Feh. I'm so glad this movie is failing. Hallelujah! The only thing that interests me about it now is what the fallout over its failure will be. How will Iger react to yet ANOTHER theatrical dud? How will the stockholders? I have my hopes, that Kathleen will get axed, that Iger will make a premature exit from the company...but then the question is: Now what? I'm afraid to even speculate. Because the worst might not be over, kids...

I can tell you one big thing that went horribly wrong that affected the potential audience for this movie/franchise…

But it’s a pretty big mental hurdle to make…so we’re gonna have a lot of busted teeth when faces hit to the ground.

I’ll spare you

I’m done scapegoating her…

This is more about Iger and his legion of analysts and bad executives.

Again: Michael arndt was told he could not put luke Skywalker in the farce awakens because he would “steal the show”

He was the show…for 40 years…

They were basically done right there. No way to reconcile that with a solid understanding of the material.

Indy is kinda an offshoot of that.
I just saw it…and it’s not as bad as the box office is gonna be. They learned a little from their mistakes of not understanding anything about their IP…
But the sin was ever doing that in the first place.
Can’t imagine how many billions in opportunity costs they have lost? Probably Handfuls.

I thought overall the movie was maybe a 5/6? It suffers flaws most critics pointed out…but not wretched.

And for reference: I was Indy to quite a few Halloween parties in college…when it was too warm for the Batman suit 🤪

I wish I was kidding…but sadly no.
I’m a fan.

So if I can read between the lines, you saw it thought it was mid with flaws but was able to suffer through it and maybe even enjoyed it a little.

I honestly would like to hear your overall review in the spoiler thread now that you've seen it.

It was better than the last 3 movies from the sister Franchise made by Disney…and 4 of 5 total if I’m honest. The spirit was right…but they still are fighting a battle against the past and there is zero reason why they’d repeatedly do this?

It was fun…a bit dull…but ok.

I never decide really until the next day. A movie always shows it’s worth to me after I’ve slept on it.

In this case I say judge it on its own merits not the “sins of the past”.

A lot of talk of alternate endings and I sense people are citing these as a means to criticize.

Is it not a good thing *if* they ultimately went with a better ending?

Damned if they do, damned if they don’t.

These so called alternate endings will be available at the same time as the director‘s cut of Rogue One.
Maybe they should have done what was done with Clue. Show each ending in a different theater. That will get people to see it multiple times.

If the rumours are true of emergency meetings by certain high level executives at Lucasfilm tomorrow, July 5th, are true, then good. TWDC has to make some significant changes before the August quarterly earnings call.

The source of those rumors?

Perhaps some here are more interested in discussing the film itself rather than obsessing over its financial performance.

It’s a shame that this even has to be explained, but such is the state of the movie threads that one would be forgiven for thinking that reviews (especially positive ones) are completely off-topic.

Indy is tanking at box office. I think Lucasfilm made a big mistake not targeting a younger audience.
Should have had Chris Pratt do the opening WW2 adventure.
Introduce him as the new Indy. Pratt has 10 years to do Indy. He’s 43.

phoebe waller bridge, who Lucasfilm wants as new Indy, doesn’t bring in an audience. No one young went to see her. Women didn’t go to see her. She was good in the film… but she isn’t an audience draw.
Kathleen Kennedy needs to be let go, a CEO needs to understand the target audience and she doesn’t. To her it’s all about replacing the male lead with females.
No one wanted phoebe waller bridge as new Indy, everyone wanted Chris Pratt.
