Well, for those of us who don't remember much of Retro-______ ( or those who already cartwheel down Future World's Corridors :lookaroun ), how will we respond?

Yensid "Pretty much, will the average guest like it, or is it just going to be one big Homage to the old attraction?" tlaw1969
I believe that this is more for the classic, nostalgia fan.

-But-

I believe that this (even with people having no backstory to go on) will be much more popular among all guests compared to what we've had now for a little short of a decade.

Does that help??

SewInto - If they greenlight everything that I think they have it will take much longer than until August. Just know that this will be a good thing for everyone.

Next i am pretty sure, as the type of reconstruction you are talking about is going to take months to complete.

Did'nt someone state that the "new" JII Pavillion would be finsihed and re-opened to coincide with EPCOT's 25 Anniversary?

That puts it at about Autumn of next year.

YAY!! :)

Oops, My bad. I think you misunderstood me. I should have been more specific.:o

I was talking about an anouncement. I knew the attraction would be opening next year, but when they said August, I figured they would anounce it This Aug. Sorry for the confusion, and thanks anyway.

So will the announcment be next year, or this year???

Could happen at the Year of a Million Dreams Press Conference in October.

That was one of the possible announcement dates along with the opening of Nemo's Undersea Adventure, the Dreamfinder and Figment statue event, or Epcot's 24th birthday (October 1st, 2006-a year from when the revamped pavilion will open).

I remember a few months ago, there weren't really any rumors about Epcot's 25th and everyone was doubting that it would be a big celebration.

Now, things are heating up and everybody is getting prepared for the huge announcements. I am so excited! I miss Retro-EPCOT, and I'm ready for those cartwheels!

At one point, marketing was considering a retro-style celebration for Epcot's 25th. This was largely based on current trends in consumer goods--retro is "in"!

I haven't heard anything substantial about a timeframe for the Imagination pavilion, except that Lasseter and Baxter really want to redo it. One thing is certain: JiIwF is the least visited attraction in Future World, and it will be refurbished... at some point.

Edit:
Considering that the "Year of a Million Dreams" announcement was incredibly uneventful, let's hope that someone with the power to make things happen realizes that refurbishing the Imagination pavilion coincides perfectly with the theme. Talk about synergy!

I've been trying to say this for years now. I think those who are against anything from the past and believe that moving foward in a completely different direction is the only way to make money are forgetting this line. It isn't just in sports, but look at retro jersey sales. In most cases, they sell comparable to the current designs. I'm not saying Disney should constantly bring back old ideas, but it isn't fair to completely dismiss something like this.

I, personally, think this would be a real treat for the fans. It might not bring people to the resort on its own merits, but throwing the fanbase a bone every once in a while will never hurt business.

I'm glad you're excited, but don't misread the marketing department's intentions. The retro theme was considered because it would make Epcot's fans happy (and let's face it, people either "get" Epcot or they don't) AND because appealing to a sense of nostalgia is popular right now. It worked very well for Disneyland's 50th anniversary.

Also, retro is simply cool. Look at the millions of dollars Star Wars and Star Trek still make every year with their retro-futurism. Clothing stores feature walls of retro T-shirts, and an odd blend of retro and postmodernism is the hottest trend in graphic design. Contrary to what some people have indignantly claimed on some past threads, marketing Epcot's 25th as retro would be neither a step backwards nor a niche market. A retro-themed anniversary, along with all the merchandise and design opportunities the celebration would create, could be very popular.

...and frankly, I'm ready to see marketing efforts that don't consist of overused magic script superimposed over pixie dust. WDW contains much more than that.

Oh I'm not. And that last line there is a part of my argument as well. And that's talking strictly from a business point of view. You don't have to take a step backward in order to honor the past. And IMO, I think that Disney could really please the fans and make a lot of money on merchandising if they decide to go this route.

Best lines of the thread.

A retro-Epcot celebration would be great. Also, I'd love to have a huge CD collection of some of the greatest Epcot Music from the past 25 years. I think the music from Epcot's Attractions is some of the best in all of Disney Theme Parks.

I get more excited about this with every post I read!! :sohappy:

Maybe make it like what Midway Mania is supposed to be and have the attraction be interactive and allow guests to truly join in on the action. Like painting in the Arts room or blasting down nightmares in the scarier portion of the ride.

That would be really fun and allow them to plus it during the general rehabs!

Arent the plans going BEYOND just the Imagination Pavillion? Isnt Spaceship Earth getting an overhaul soon? Possibly returing some of its original elements!?? And where does Wonders of Life and Universe of Energy stand in all of this excitment?

I hope they gut mission space next and build a grand attraction filled with AA's that shows us glimpses of the future...an attraction that could be called....CENTURY 3!

Hardly Retro...

While everyone is crediting the WDI rethink of JII to everything from nostalgia to marketing, you might want to consider the original theme of EPCOT Center and where DF & F figured into the story.

While JIYI's lessons on three-of-the-five senses has little or nothing to do with the overarching theme of Future World, Dreamfinder & Figment were proactive representatives of the process of creativity that brought everything in the Future (World) and the World (Showcase) into being.

Is it at all possible, dear cynics, that Tony has something bigger in mind... like restoring the theme of EPCOT to a Discovery Park, instead of just a trade show with thrill rides?

Just one little spark from

Disney has bigger fish to fry than UoE right now, but WoL shows signs of having a death sentence.
