I'm sick of these stupid reputation points!

I just hit -899 reputation points and one of my red boxes (light color) vanished!:sohappy:

I am confused. Do you not want to be maxed out on negative rep boxes? I've never given negative rep but would be willing to make an exception if and only if you wanted your -900 again. I'll bet I could bump you back down to 8 red if we act quickly.

A negative plus a negative equals a positive, right? So by giving you red, we'd be showing you respect, right?

My head hurts.

Hi MKCP 1986! By way of explanation, let me give you a little background. Back when the reputation points first started, many of us were attempting to figure out just how they worked. I even posted an abstract form the vBulletin Version 3 users manual that gave a general explanation, although that post was removed by a moderator. So, in the interest of science (as GoofyFan1 noted) I decided to strike out on my own to learn about the point system.

I began to solicit negative points from other members based upon my theory that it would be easier to go "downhill" rather than "uphill". I figured that gravity, my naturally surly nature and (as pointed out to me by several members) my viewpoint that the "glass is half empty", would assure me of going to zero in a relatively short period. This process would allow me to observe and calculate several important reputation point values in short order. However, my investigation was quickly halted when I found that I had been blessed overnight with -1,000 reputation points.

So, while I have been unable to test out my first theory, I am now presented with a new vantage point from which to conduct my experiment. Thus far we know that green boxes are positive and red boxes are negative. I postulate that gray boxes are neutral. For example, if you had +1 points you would have a green box (I think). If you had zero points, you would have a gray box. If you had -1 points, you would have a red box. However, it could be that if you have +49 points to -49 points you might still have a gray box. Further investigation will be required to support any conclusions.

P.S. my new point count is -877. You guys and gals are cool!

Woody, I currently have 39 points. When I gave you some props, I had 33 points. Was that a green or an grey box?

Great post! You put a reputation point number down. It was a green box! So, that shoots down part of my previous supposition. Thank you for the input!

See I too did not know if giving you red was what you wanted to not. I have wanted to give you props but was afraid it was not what you want. Some are on there way now for being such a good spider...

I understand fully! I still get negative points from my original "negative point" solicitation with notes like, "...wanted to help you out Woody..". I enjoy those too because I don't really care if my reputation points are positive or negative and several have given me an insight as to how the system works. My inquiry was designed to reveal the nature of the reputation point system.

What I care about are the many kind people I have met on this forum, even the ones who dislike me and tell me I'm a big hypocrite! Thanks mrtoad!

Never saw you as a problem.....often we're on the same side of an issue. I just never sent you points because I didn't know what type you wanted.

You are right about the people. I think that's what it is about.

I've never had a problem with Woody either...he has been helpful in fact.

Why Woody, I had no idea you were such an intelligent and insightful spider.

My fear of you has disappeared and been replaced with respect.

Such a cute little spider!!!

I think there has been maybe one or two things I didn't agree with Woody on, but everything else I agree with. He's a nice guy from what I have seen on here. I think people see all the red boxes and think negative about him from the start (as I'll admit I did because he had to get there somehow). It wasn't until I started reading his posts and realizing the story behind the red boxes that I gained a lot of respect towards him. Now he gets green boxes all the time from me!

Hey Woody, I hope your experiment didn't backfire. It seems you've got yourself a little fan club.

Sometimes science keeps it's mysteries, and sometimes it opens up a whole new universe. Enjoy! :D

User Reputation
This section contains many settings that dictate how users of your forum are able to affect each other's reputation score.

Enable User Reputation system
This is the global switch the the reputation system. If you disable this, users will not be able to rate each other nor will their scores be visible.

Allow Users to Hide Their Reputation
If a user hides their reputation, their reputation level will display "User has disabled reputation". The benefit of this is that it allows users who find the system distasteful can choose to not have their posts rated.

Default Reputation
This is the reputation score that new users will start out with.

Number of Reputation Levels to Display
When a user enters their User CP, they will see a list of their most recent reputation ratings. This affects how many of the latest ratings to display.

Administrator's Reputation Power
If you wish to have administrator's wield a certain reputation power independent of their calculated score, enter it here. Otherwise, set this to 0 and they will use the same calculations as everyone else.

Register Date Factor
The number of reputation points that a user is able to give or take is dependant on several factors, with the length they have been registered as one of them. A user's power is first initialized at 1 and then this factor and the factors that follow are used to increase it. For example if you set this to 365, every 365 days that the user has been a member of your forum, they would gain one point. So if they have been a member for five years, they would gain 5 points of power for a total of 6.

Post Count Factor
The amount of posts that a user has can also affect their reputation power. Set this to number of posts that you want to award one point for. For example, set this to 50 and for a user with 500 posts, they would gain 10 points of power.

Reputation Point Factor
The users current reputation score can also affect their reputation power. Set this to 100 and a user with a reputation of 1000 would gain 10 points of reputation power. If you set any of the power factors to 0, that will effectively remove that factor from having an effect on the user's reputation power.

Minimum Post Count
If the reputation system is enabled, anyone will be able to rate a post but only users with a post count above the level you set here will be able to actually give points or take points from another user.

Minimum Reputation Count
As with the post count above, a user must have a reputation above this level to be able to give or take points from another user's score.

Daily Reputation Clicks Limit
This sets how many unique members that a forum user will be able to rate in any 24 hour period. Administrators can rate as many people as they wish.

Reputation User Spread
This setting dictates how many unique members that a user must rate before they are able to rate the same member twice. The goal of this setting is to stop a member from either artificially bumping or dropping a user by repeatedly rating their posts.

Hi Tramp! That's part of the vBulletin Version 3 user manual and it answers some questions. I posted it awhile back, but it was removed by a moderator (without comment), so I didn't want to post it again.

However, as you can see, the point spread and power factors all depend upon how the administrator makes the setting(s).

With your CPA background it should be easy for you to figure out the settings!:)
