Hurricane Irma

Ship will also run out of food. Not like they can extend the cruise for a few more days. I guess they could but>>>>

Not sure a cruise line could help people out of this situation? At least if drove there you have a shot of driving out.

During Harvey some ships took on supplies in New Orleans. One cruise line allowed people to leave the ship in New Orleans if they wanted to. It might cost em a bit, but they could at least sail into the Gulf and ride it out there or let people debark in Mobile or maybe New Orleans. Kicking em off in the middle of an evacuation area is pretty crummy.

Didn't you know? Cakes are essential items for that hurricane party Bob down the street is throwing. ;)

(Actually there are a few people I know from high school posting on Facebook about how they're throwing a party for the hurricane. This is not a Nor'Easter!)

I'm not throwing a party, but might have several guests, so a cake might be nice. My husband's birthday was yesterday, but we ended up celebrating it during Charley.

I agree.

What is it with people throwing a hurricane party? That's so 1960s..... That's the last thing I'd want to do when a 175 mph storm is headed my way. Unless I wanted to remove myself from the gene pool.....

The cruises would not have ended until Saturday or Sunday.

I don't know what the solution would have been.. but dropping people off smack dab in a mandatory evacuation zone, and many of them without vehicles, with hotels not available, flights not available- doesn't really seem like it was the best option.

Right? I mean, as a New Englander, we'd often do blizzard parties or the like, but that didn't include the tropical force winds and flooding. Usually just brief white out conditions, maybe some icing and the T closing. So we'd stock up and then either stay bundled with some friends that live by the hospital and won't lose their power or trek out to someone's house once we can see again to drink and play games.

So they had plenty of provisions to return to a port other than Miami. I bet they plan like caterers do, # of guests plus 10%. Like I said, I eat a LOT of shrimp..... And Disney lets me eat every single entrée on the dinner menu, if I have room.

Unfortunately, once this hits, there's not much we can do besides play some games or try to make the time pass watching something on Netflix. I have stuff downloaded for offline viewing. Accompanied with a beer.

Florida Man's gotta eat, too.

Yeah, but that icing will turn your tongue and teeth bright blue......

Oh, by the way, Publix doesn't actually bake the cakes at the stores. They are shipped, frozen, to each store, defrosted then iced. Says my daughter who use to work in the deli and would bring home the cakes they let employees have at the end of the day. That explains why Publix cakes are so dry.

I am really curious, what is so toxic about Florida tap water? I always have 5 gallon containers of water (4 of them) living in my house or garage for electric emergencies. They are consumable.

They does not sound appetizing at all.

Oh this is neat.. sounds like someone overreacted in the case of NCL.

Norwegian dropped passengers off in Miami if they wanted to be (residents).
Anyone who couldn't get out was to remain on the Escape, and Sky passengers were moved to the Escape.
That ship is now sailing to safety.

At least that story makes me feel good.

A warm beer, I'm sure. Thanks for the reminder. I need to do that for some of my stuff on Amazon Prime. Or I could just finish the last three books in the Song of Ice and Fire series.

So can we assume that other cruise line was the one we all think it is?

ETA: Just read the Herald story. Carnival - are you kidding? You're still thinking, on Thursday, of cruising to Havana? Kudos to NCL for attempting to take care of their passengers and getting those they could to safety. Why do people still cruise on Carnival?

The 11pm advisory. Very much an "up the spine" path for the official forecast currently:
