Hurricane Irma

I am really curious, what is so toxic about Florida tap water? I always have 5 gallon containers of water (4 of them) living in my house or garage for electric emergencies. They are consumable.

There's absolutely nothing toxic about Florida water. Some areas may have a funny taste (WDW and Tampa come to mind), but the water is from the various aquifers and is very good water. The problem is that the storm could damage the treatment plants for municipal sources of potable water, allowing contaminated water to leak into the supply. Pumping stations could be damaged. Water towers destroyed. The City of Tallahassee gets most of its water from wells and if pumps are damaged, it will be hard to get water out of those wells. So lots of things can prevent residents from getting any or safe water when they turn on the tap. Hence the mad panic for bottled water. And you'd be surprised the number of people on private well water - not that uncommon here in North Florida.

The 11pm advisory. Very much an "up the spine" path for the official forecast currently:

Thank you for your reply. We have family in Clearwater evac area A. We have bad storms here too..winter and summer. We were very curious about the water aspect. Most here have a water plan..

Are the majority of your potable water sources surface water - lakes, rivers/streams, reservoirs? It's very different when potable water is taken from underground aquifers. The source is very rarely affected - it's the treatment and distribution that can be the issue.

So can we assume that other cruise line was the one we all think it is?

ETA: Just read the Herald story. Carnival - are you kidding? You're still thinking, on Thursday, of cruising to Havana? Kudos to NCL for attempting to take care of their passengers and getting those they could to safety. Why do people still cruise on Carnival?

I don't understand it!!

Royal Caribbean and Norwegian did the right thing.. DCL sounds like they helped people get reservations. But yeah, Carnival?? W. T. H.

So this is from CNN (everyone's favorite network ;)), it's a little hard to read but it's the clearest representation I've seen so far for Central FL...it shows the Euro model and GFS model overlapping. The dark pink circle in the center is the ECMWF, with the GFS slightly to the right and closer to the coast, the smallest white circle. They are forecasting that Central Florida might have Cat 4 winds. hurricane irma 09-07-17 11pm model comparison.jpg

Ooof, nasty storm, fellow Floridians. Couldn't design a worse one if you wanted to put the entire state in peril and maximize property damage.

Keep in mind Charley was a Cat 3 when it hit land in Port Charlotte -- it was closer to a Cat 1 when it passed over Orange County. If the estimates hold, Irma will be worse for the area. I'm actually curious how much it will weaken passing over the Everglades and Lake O (talk about catastrophic flooding potential - there's a reason that dike was constructed...).

After it passes over the Everglades and sucks everything up, Orlando is going to have a Gatorcaine!

Well, I was all set to drive in this Saturday for 7 days... 4 at Disney and then 3 at the Universal Parks. Had FastPasses and Dinner reservations (Free Dining!) all booked and a great itinerary planned and poof. Really unfortunate, but it's just looking like best case 2 of our 4 Disney days would go up in smoke. I'm really bummed because it's unlikely I'll be able to get to Orlando again until this time in 2019. At least I will have a lot of new attractions to look forward to. And maybe Volcano Bay will actually be built by then!

But on a more serious note, my best wishes are with all of you who are in the path of the storm. Very little I can actually do to help right this minute but I did open up my home to an evacuating family from Sarasota who contacted be on Airbnb. They seem very appreciative. I hope those of you seeking shelter are successful in doing so and encounter the good that disasters bring out in people and not the bad.

So my friend that was at Yeehaw Junction earlier.. just now arriving to Orlando. 13 hours.

Really? Google shows that road is pretty busy in spots but moving at a decent clip overall. I would have guessed more like 3 hours to make that drive. Google says you can get from Yeehaw Jct all the way out to The Villages in just over 2.

Edit... Oh okay. From Key West in 13 hours.

That actually doesn't sound TOO terrible. The storm is still a pretty long ways off so people, even in the Keys, still have a decent amount of time to get to safety.

I'm thinking MCO will need to close earlier than 5pm on Saturday (not Friday like I posted earlier) if Irma is near Lake O around 8pm, if planes can't take off when winds are greater than 35mph. Good luck to anyone flying out tomorrow or Saturday!

The Corps has been releasing the water in Lake O to prevent the dike failing.
