Hurricane Ian expected to impact Florida (updates and related discussions)

I have a Twitter account but never ever use it. My understanding is that's true for the majority of Twitter accounts, and that most of the conversation/engagement there comes from a very small percentage of accounts.
It’s important that the Russian bots know Walt Disney World is closed.

Although I agree with your point in principle.. but this is not a “ complexity” as you call it. My wife is a Disney travel agent and just yesterday she looked at me and said..” what do you think they will do about the people who have tickets”? I said in 10 seconds after she asked..” just extend them a year for everyone”. Now either I’m a genius, which I’m far from.. or this particular problem is not a hard thing to fix. They could have thought about this days ago. It’s not that hard.
Of course this is also a self inflicted “complexity”. If they had not added expiration to the tickets then there would be nothing to extend.

Disney spent billions on NextGen. Some sort of emergency alert system should have been part of the integration and updates where a message could be pushed to multiple platforms (app, website, email, social media, etc.).

They did that for Dorian though - not park closures, but early closing. They were all supposed to close at a certain time, but then Epcot ended up staying open a few hours later than posted. (I can’t remember what the other parks did, as we were at Epcot.)

I think that's a lot easier than closing entirely, though. You already have staff in place, guests in attendance, etc. as opposed to having to pull in people to work and everything else.

I was sat in connections cafe when this came through. Everyone’s phone seemed to go off together, and everyone reaching for the phone to check the update. Was honestly like something from a disaster movie.

Guess the next two days I just hunker down. Could go for a swim in the pool at my Villa, except the villa management company sent guys round to dump all the pool furniture in there. It’s hard work swimming round semi submerged sun loungers.
I was about to board Nemo and thought there was a problem with the ride.

They were able to say "parks closed" on their social media accounts without all the extra stuff. There was no reason they couldn't do it on their website with all the details to follow later.

Look, if Disney chose to do this, it was clearly the only possible way it could be handled. Any other option was obviously impossible.

Agree. Also, being one of the biggest corporations in the world, they know what they can and can’t do. Extending the tickets is an easy fix and they do it thousands of times during a year with changing dates, times, extensions etc. it’s not something they have to “ figure” out if they can do it.
Personally, they could have given it a 2 or 3 year extension. You wonder how many of these people don’t go to Disney yearly. Maybe add in a buyback for the people who can’t come back.

As of right now with the current track the eye will be passing directly over WDW Thur Mid day (Edit that’s MK.) If the track moves further south it will mean much more rain, however, tracks are speeding up so that will limit rainfall. The current rain graphic is based on the 2pm forecast. This map is the 5pm one This current track has a Wed afternoon landfall and a Thur night Atlantic splashdown. Once you are South and west of the eye the rain will end quickly due to the front. This is really touch and go.

At that point there won't be any 'eye' - just the center of the storm. WDW is like 80miles inland. The main concern here will be rain as the large storm slowly chugs across and up the state.

Tropical Storm winds are like the short storms everyone experiences everywhere. Some trees down, some fun video, some water intrusion and that's about it. The problem with a major tropical system like this inland is sustained heavy rains for 24+hrs. And for that the path itself isn't all that interesting... more about how long and on what side of the storm you are on.

This may be a stupid question, but the announcement says for everyone to check in by 3pm tomorrow....is that just for tomorrow's arrivals? What about Thursday/Friday? Operation as normal..? I have some friends who are supposed to be arriving Late Thursday night/Early Friday provided that it's possible (they are coming from SE Florida). Just trying to figure out how that is going to work for them.

I'm gonna say there is going to be no check in. They want people safely in their rooms by then. Plus I'm sure they're going to be extremely short staffed.

I wouldn't count on them being able to check-in. The 3PM is intended, I think, to be the cutoff before the closures. So no check-ins on Thursday at all, and Friday is up in the air.

They need to do online check-in. Resorts will be minimally staffed. And expect areas to be flooded.

They did do online check-in, but just wondering if they'll even be allowed in..? I haven't ever dealt with beginning a trip right around a hurricane, so I am not sure. They just dont want to get there and then be turned away with nowhere to go.

I wouldn't leave until they are sure it's going to be open on Friday. I wouldn't go on Thursday at all.

The weather page has been updated - no Check in on Thursday.

"Partially used multi-day theme park tickets with a validity window impacted by closure due to Hurricane Ian will be automatically extended to allow use of the remaining unused ticket days through September 30, 2023. In order to enter a park, both a park reservation and valid ticket for the same park on the same date is required.

For the safety of our Guests and Cast Members, all Guests including our Disney Vacation Club Members must check in to our resorts on Sept. 28, by 3 p.m. Guests may reschedule their trip or cancel their stay with us; any customary cancellation fees will be waived. Check in will not be accepted on Thurs Sept 29."

Then I'd recommend them chatting online with a CM.
