Hurricane Ian expected to impact Florida (updates and related discussions)

I do wonder how those barges are secured for an event like this. You'd think the Stargate would be susceptible to some wind impact, but I'd also think that was taken into account when designing it.

That assumes that by tomorrow and Thursday the Disney and Universal park grounds aren't submerged like Six Flags New Orleans (not saying they will, but were their flood guards and storm drainage systems built to handle double-digit rainfall?).

Sure, I'm just saying that if that happens they can just say they're closing Friday etc. too. Announcing a Friday closure now eliminates their options -- it's much harder to reverse course and say "oh never mind, actually we're going to open even though we said we were closing" than it is to wait to announce you're going to close.

Wasn’t there a storm fairly recently where they closed MCO and the parks and then the storm took a sudden turn and nothing happened?
We live in MA and hurricanes remind me of every snowstorm we have here. Could be 2 feet, could be 2 inches. You never know 🤷🏻‍♀️
If the eye shifts 50 miles East. It will massively reduce the impact on Orlando.

Sitting here on the patio in La Jolla where under cloudless skies, light sea breeze, 73 degrees this afternoon, the news radio mentioned the preparations in Florida for a big hurricane to strike the Tampa area. Being a tad smarter than the average Southern Californian, I realized that would probably take the track inland towards Disney World. Yikes!

I now see this is a huge developing story...

Guests shouldn't have to hunt around several links deep looking for the hours of parks a day or two away to learn if the parks are closing due to a major hurricane.

I just opened my MDE. There is nothing on the front page of the app. There is no push notification.

I agree with you. I may have been totally out of the loop on this hurricane here 3,000 miles away in San Diego County, but the local team out there in Orlando needed to have been on top of this 72 hours ago once the initial tracking cone took aim at central Florida.

Looking at their Hurricane Ian communication thus far, it looks incompetent, sloppy, and late.

Agreed, it isn't good enough. I constantly hear from leaders that comms inside the company is at an all time low. Left doesn't know what right is doing on anything.

That is clearly the case here with this one.

And if they can't get hurricane communications working effectively, I shudder to think how they handle less life-threatening comms that are still vitally important to paying customers and front-line CM's alike.

When you're the leader, you don't have to follow.

They did that for Dorian though - not park closures, but early closing. They were all supposed to close at a certain time, but then Epcot ended up staying open a few hours later than posted. (I can’t remember what the other parks did, as we were at Epcot.)

As of right now with the current track the eye will be passing directly over WDW Thur Mid day (Edit that’s MK.) If the track moves further south it will mean much more rain, however, tracks are speeding up so that will limit rainfall. The current rain graphic is based on the 2pm forecast. This map is the 5pm one This current track has a Wed afternoon landfall and a Thur night Atlantic splashdown. Once you are South and west of the eye the rain will end quickly due to the front. This is really touch and go.
After seeing this, I went and pulled up the track. Irma went 5-10 miles west of my Dad's house, this is looking 5-10 miles east. Also, have friends that live in the Sanford area and Orange City and this is not so hot for them either. Everyone is battened down as best they can.

This is a great example of all the complexities involved that need to be vetted before they make these releases. This is why it takes so long. If they didn’t have this in, they’d be flooded with phone calls asking ”what about”.
