Here come the mermaids

Is that a mermaid on the far left of the concept picture? It looks like something coming up out of the water and a bit scary. I'm all for plussing but, as I mentioned earlier, if they make the mistake of this being too far to the scary end of the scale, it could be the death of the attraction.

A bit blurry but this is one concept picture.

Thank you, Raven, for sharing this with us. I am much more excited about this addition now that I have an idea of what it should look like. There seems to be just enough creepy factor to set the mood for the ride.

I only saw the movie once, and it was pretty forgettable, but is this as scary as the mermaids ever got?

If so that's pretty tame, shouldn't be an issue for any kid willing to ride with skeletons, cannon fire, burning villages and wench fights.

They have removed things already to make room for film references. I used to LOVE the old scene at the end with the pirates raiding the treasure room, with the guards tied up and gagged. Now we see Jack Sparrow sitting in a chair.

Oh. maybe i like to think I have a better memory than I actually do hahaha.

Were there actual pirates in that treasure room scene at the end of the ride or just the bound and gagged guards? I only remember the guards, and have to say the current ending seems like a better conclusion to the story.

There is no linear story.

I just can't get upset at this stuff anymore. The last straw for me was c. 2005 in Disneyland, when a couple of teenage girls in our boat exclaimed excitedly about the jail cell scene with the dog holding the keys, "OMG, they put in the dog from the movie!" That was before any Jack Sparrow additions to the ride.

People aren't bothered with knowing the origins of the ride vs. the film. I just can't care anymore.

POTC was totally butchered the first time they added movie characters. They're just beating a dead horse at this point.

And I am a fan of the movie series.
I too detest the movie-overlay but thought the movies were alright. Well the first two, then they started to feel like a guest who overstayed his welcome.

Paris still has a Sparrow-free Pirates. Sheer bliss. The French/Europeans are always slightly less obsessed with celeb culture. 'Where's Waldo with Captain Sparrow' would simply not cut it as a ride in DLP. But an overhead rope-swinging AA pirate does!

There is a narrative and tale of consequence - you keep beating this horse.. and it's a horse with 3 legs. One of these days I'm gonna write this all up and let the bloggers chew on it. The story is what gives the ride the continuity... the prologue, the epilogue, and the climax are all there. What it lacks is specific characters you follow through a plot. Instead it is more of a morality tale.. a tale of the lifestyle of the pirates and the tale of what greedy and gluttony put you in the end.

If there were no story or narrative - we could mix up the scenes at will and have no consequence.

Right, there WAS no specific characters to follow through a plot, until every other pirate started asking "Where is Captain Jack Sparrow?". It would have been one thing to add him in a few places, but the complete changing of the dialogue made it much worse for me.

i was thinking about this last night, with this slight overlay to pirates with the new movie and just thought how disspaointing it is for the movie to start taking over what the movie is actually originally based upon (brain fart)

so, then i thought, what if they just scrapped adding any new additions from the movies and just built a totally different pirates ride say in Disney Studio's. obviously not called pirates of the carribbean. something like "the adventures of captain jack sparrow" a ride a little more thrilling, much like indy.

BUT THEN...

i started to think why on earth does magic kingdom have to be like a museum? its a theme park, it needs to move into the 21st century and update its attractions. so, a bit controversially. why not just totally update pirates of the carribbean to fit with the current franchise? possibly with a story of its own? trying to keep the charm of the original. id love the idea of hans zimmer doing an original score for the ride, but incorporating "a pirates like for me" into it.

Jack should have just been one of the pirates. No specific mentioning, just there.

Barbossa being in charge and everybody looking for Jack has no sense to it. It does not fit the chronology of the films, as Barbossa had yet to mutiny, not is there sense in the town wanting to be plundered by a certain pirate.

I agree completely. How long are we supposed to hold onto some of these rides in the Magic Kingdom? I am all for preserving Walt's Legacy, but keeping attractions that are showing they are well past their age is something that needs to be handled in some fashion. Pirates of the Caribbean has always been a favorite of mine, but it could stand to handle a deep scrub wash. All of the AA and some FX (like a more realistic ship vs Castle wall fight) could use a complete overhaul.

With attractions like...Harry Potter ( I know, I sad a bad word), Disney needs to step up their game when it comes to immersion. When I am riding by some of those pirates, I feel completely drawn out of it as I watch their shiny plastic lifeless faces go by.
