I recall reading (don't remember the source) that Marc Davis wasn't particularly fond of the skeleton cavern at Disneyland. He felt that it was just filler for the real show that began when the ship was firing on the fort. This was supposedly one of the factors that led to WDW's shorter skeleton cavern (besides budget and the need to build quickly).
If this is true, perhaps Marc would have approved of a little plussing in this area. Whether or not he would have liked man-eating mermaids is debatable but I'm OK with the idea.

Seeing DL's version not too long ago, I can see why he would have thought that. Their version has a lot more content in general compared to ours, but there isn't a whole lot going on in the extra scenes leading up to the fort.

You're right, there was a greater story...that got left behind in Anaheim when POTC made the journey to Florida in '73.

The abbreviated cave sequence in WDW never made any sense (not that the DL original is very logical, either). You board a boat, immediately enter a cave, and then immediately encounter skeletons that had been digging up a treasure chest?? (Why didn't the Spanish soldiers get the treasure when they built the tunnel? Their fort is just a few feet away! And why are the skeletons even there? Didn't the soldiers notice the stink?)

Clearly the WDW cave was shoehorned in to resemble DL, but without the elaborate basement cave system out west. And while that cave does set the mood and create atmosphere, the same can hardly be said of WDW.

Sure, it doesn't necessarily make sense either to enter a cave with a ghost talking on a waterfall, then see mermaids on a beach (although the drawing suggests there is now a reason for the skeletons to be there).

But adding this new scene is certainly not vandalizing some great work of art.

Wrong. Pirates at World's abridgements, besides being budgetary, also serve as a means of cutting out the time-travel stuff in the other versions. You go straight into the fort as it is being attacked by the pirates and the boats are your escape route. A bad tide takes you through Creepy Skeleton Cavern, these guys probably having been dead a long time and their treasure having already been looted. You go down the drop and emerge onto the bay and look up to the ocean side of the fort as it is fighting off the pirate ship.

Doesn't Blackbeard mention mermaids in the mist scene?
No, Here is Blackbeards spiel
DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES!
Aye, Tales there be a plenty in this cursed place
DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES!
Ah but they do tell tales, So says I, Blackbeard
DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES!
If ye be brave or fool enough to face a pirates curse, Proceed
DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES!
Take heed wretched curse, your fate is sealed.

I wasn't even a fan if the 3rd and 4th POTC movies. Both were subpar IMO. I welcome the mermaids. It will not affect my ride enjoyment at all. It especially will not make it worse! Movie tie-ins were expected with the popularity of the movies. I would say most people enjoy the additions, just like i do and everyone else I know who has seen them. The actual ride is still the same fun ride we all know and love. But I dont even know why I waste my time questioning complaints over nothing on here anymore. Waste of time.

I agree and I think they ought to do more movie crossovers too. Pirate Stitch would be a perfect addition along with the mermaids from Peter Pan. They could even have Wall-E in the treasure room compacting the gold doubloons.

I love Wall-e! I think they need to turn one of the empty pavilions in Epcot into a "green pavilion" and have a wall-e attraction! Or a wall-e attraction for tomorrow land refurb ( fingers crossed )

I like the POTC ride as an original ride . My favourite version is the DLP version . You walk through an intricate castle and cave' s before being loaded on . There is always an atmosphere as your boats sail past people eating in the blue lagoon . They look as if they are on a tropical island . They often shout bon voyage and such like as you go past . It was a thrill pointing out all the bits to my 6 year old that had influenced the movie , rather than bits that have been added on because of the movie .

What then are you enjoying if not the narrative structure of the attraction? The ride system? The pure sensory stimulation devoid of its purpose?

I liked the original PotC. It was fun and interesting. Now it's mostly boring. I don't even care what they add or take away any longer. I doubt it will help and don't see how it can hurt what has become, IMO, a mostly crappy ride.

Is this hyperbole? Or heresy? ;)
