Here come the mermaids

I'll have to wait to see it in person... but it looks like it could be a subtle and creepy effect. Not a fan of the singing, though.

Darn, I was just there this morning and missed the opportunity to see it in person! The last time I rode, there was a peculiar spotlight in the general area of the mermaids that I thought might have had something to do with it.

Here's the mermaid video that we've been waiting for. Interesting...

What really cracks me up about this video is the ominous, slow-motion replay of the mermaid's blurry, indistinct shape splashing quickly away in the water.

It reminds me of the standard M.O. of Destination Truth (or, an even guiltier pleasure, Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files). I can clearly picture Josh Gates, in his distinctive Muppety voice, scream "Mermaid!" as the cameraman pans around just a second too late to actually capture anything beyond a vague moving blur -- footage that is then shown again in slow motion for the optimum creepy effect.

It's been a nice week of surprise mermaids. First the new fantasyland then today riding pirates something was different.

I am a long time fan of POTC (our boats name is black pearl so we are big fans) and I will say this was well done. Before there was nothing to see right after the Blackbeard scene and now there is a nice, subtle well done effect. The most obvious thing you will notice is the bubbles in the water on both sides of the boat. Combine that with the music which adds a feeling of forboding and it turns into a nice addition. The projection is hard to see and easy to miss but I think that adds to the mystery. We rode 3 times today and each time we saw more of the effect. This was nice having it build anticipation each time and keeping the family looking for more.

Set your expectations to a reasonable level and you will most likely walk off the ride very pleased with the addition.

Btw I watched the video and it doesn't demonstrate the effect very well. You need to be in person for everything to come together. First few times I admit I had goose bumps. The music really pulls it together.

Hope this helps. Enjoy!

Just got a chance to see it in person a few times. Personally, I like it! I think it adds a bit if creepiness that Pirates needed. I actually think the wrecked boat helps because it puts the focus on the mermaid skeleton. I made a point to listen to the guests around me, and I heard nothing bit good things from everyone. The only criticism I have is that the extra fog in the room really emphasizes that the mermaids are projections from above. I wish they could figure out a way to minimize that so it really can appear as though these creatures are coming up from below. All in all, it's nitpicky, so I'll sum up by saying nice job WDI.

If only I could say the same for the Country Bears...

That will be corrected when the Falls are back in running order

Rode pirates today for the first time since my last visit to the parks in 2004 and just happened to see the mermaids. Very convincing and unnerving effect, especially the way they appear to create a little splash with their tails as they dive deeper at the end of their animation. There was at least one projection on each side of the boat, from above, onto a patch of bubbles. To be honest, I liked the mermaids better than all the Johnny Depps they've added to the ride since the last time I was there.

I saw the effect around 4:00 but when we went back later at 8:30 it was no longer working, though the bubbles were still there and you could still hear the singing all the way up to the drop.

We obviously have the same taste in TV shows. Gates is the man!

ewwww..... very dissapointed. This is the time Disney needs to STOP adding movie things to this classic ride.
stop relying on projections.

they need to just have a head pop out of the water, and maybe a flipper thats it. no stupid projections. plus why would the water light up? as far as i know mermaids don't carry light.

I would love to see how the mermaids look in person, but I think the music is great. Always thought that scene in the movie was very creepy, and think it will be even better in the ride.

I think the mermaid additions are pretty cool, the skeleton especially. I always wondered what killed the pirates on the beach & refused to believe it was the crabs. Haha.

However, is it just me not hearing it or have they completely done away with the "Dead men tell no tales!" line through that scene? If they have to replace it with music, I'd much rather have that classic line back.

It played once in the video, right after Blackbeard. They might have it again before the drop, but I don't know.
