they need to just have a head pop out of the water, and maybe a flipper thats it. no stupid projections. plus why would the water light up? as far as i know mermaids don't carry light.

You know, nine times out of ten I'd be right there with you.
Generally, I hate using projections in dark rides, but having seen it in person, I think that this particular efffect, in this particular situation works better as a projection than it ever would as a sluggish, underwater puppet.
Watch the thing in person, then tell me I'm wrong.

ugh "Dead men tell no tales" HAS to repeat though. That's possibly one of the most iconic Disney attraction things ever. Though I am told they are still in the process of adjusting this scene.

I would guess some major audio tuning will be done. There is currently a long period of darkness and near-silence bedore the drop.

Yes. I swear if when I ride it this coming Tuesday and I hear "Dead men..." just once and not repeating as you pass by, I just might freak out!

Saw the effect last night and thought it was kinda blah. If I didn't know it was supposed to be a mermaid, I'd have no idea what i just saw - just some blurry bubbling light in the water. I don't think they've gotten it quite yet but I guess we'll see if they continue to tinker with it or leave it as is.

For those are you that are complaining I really don't understand it. This is what Disney fans love, subtle details that add to the storyline. This is just that and I personally love it. It did not take away from anything and if there were no Internet and you just arrived at the park and saw this small detail addition, you'd be pleasantly surprised. With the Internet we try to make things bigger than they are. This is a small detail addition and didn't even cause a closure to the ride. I think lately Disney is starting to understand that people love details and are changing the way that they think more towards the original Disney feeling. I love that!

I like the idea of the effect but after seeing it in person I don't think they have the execution quite right yet. I do hope that they find a way to perfect it though.

Rode it yesterday and was not as impressed as I had hoped to be.. now the skeleton looks great to me, although it clutters that area JUST a little to me, but the mermaids? Flash of blurry light to me as well and would have only knew it to be a mermaid from reading these boards..
And I am in NO way a "doom and gloomer", my wife and I take the kids at LEAST once a week and I am not one to point out burnt out bulbs all day ;)

The effect is most obvious from 37 seconds to 42 seconds. It is pretty subtle and unless you're looking for it and know what it is, I'm not sure you'd even know they were mermaids.

I like the addition of the mermaids, but I'm not sure about the song that was added. I'm a little on the fence on the audio for this portion of the ride. Before it was almost too quiet, now I think it may be too noisy with the original "Dead men tell no tales", then adding Davy Jones and the mist waterfall and now the singing mermaid. I'll have to see it in person, but in the videos, it almost makes things feel a little too rushed to go from one to the next.
