You would be surprised at the cost of a figure, to give you an idea, 1 chicken - $7k-10k do that math

If I had guess, I would say a new animatronic is easily six figures, especially after design, construction, programming, testing, installation, etc.
Projectors are cheaper at about $7500 each, then throw in the CG programming, installation and testing, they're probably nowhere near the cost of adding an animatronic figure or two.

budget constraints trimmed down the scale of the project so now what you see is what you get, No Animatronic figures just Magic :D
Interesting, and disappointing.
I guess the image I have was from before the figures were cut, because it is clearly not showing a projection on the water.

I'm waiting for my visit in late January to give my full judgement. From what I see, the projections are a bit of a tease and that's OK with me.
As far as the music is concerned, it seems to add a touch of creepiness to the scene without making it over-the-top frightening.
I just hope that it's still working in January when I'm there. ;)

I think having something on the other side of the boat would help out a lot. From what little is there now it almost makes you wonder why they did it.

Love it, very subtle. Well done. This is perfect.

Now just get rid of the fog screen projection and take out the music. The very slow and haunting "yo-ho" is all you need right through to the first town scene.

For the WDW Version I am OK with this since the story is that the Grotto and attack on the town are happening in the same timeframe. At Disneyland on the other hand where the grotto is supposed to take place in the present (19th Century New Orleans), it would not make sense for the Disneyland version.
