Haters Be Hatin?

Yep. My Aunt and Uncle make comments sometimes. They'll mention how there are other places to go besides Disney, or ask me why I don't try someplace else for a change. Ironic since they are the ones who have been going to Cloud 9 Ranch in Missouri every year for 25 years or so.

We bought a new house out in the country back in 2011 and it has a 30 X 50 Pole Barn in it, but the previous owner (who had it built) never got the concrete floor poured, so it just has gravel, and cats and other varmits can run under the doors since there is no floor. My Dad (who also doesn't approve of me going every year, but he generally keeps his comments to himself) and my Aunt and Uncle came over last year for one of the kids' birthday party and I was showing them around the place. When we were out in the shed, we were talking about the lack of a floor out there and I mentioned how I may eventually put a floor in, but I don't want to spend the money right now and it isn't a priority at this point in time. My uncle made a crack about how I could pay for that floor with the money it costs to go on those WDW trips. Ummm...ya, true, but neither me nor my kids care about having a concrete floor in a shed, but we very much do care about those annual family vacations. To each his own priorities, but for me, spending time with my family at WDW is more important than a floor in a shed.

I don't know if "hate" is the word I'd use (though I love the pics in the thread), but we travel every other month or so to FL to go to Disney and get the "again?!?" comment every so often. We enjoy it and it's really as simple as that!

We do, infact at a child free dinner with a group of friends this came up. 8 couples all had been to WDW in the last 18 months with kids. DH and I go once a year, stay on property (except next two day trip) we do ADR's but no hoppers we also do beach trips and some weekends to visit family in Chicago and DC. Couple 2 owns a home in Kissime is there 4x a year with WDW and UNI AP's, they pretty much stay in Orlando for trips. Couple 3 dad is a pilot and retired military, they stay at Shades and fly free go down 2x a year, they also travel to other places. The other families were just curious as to what we all loved the place, most of them were of the "been there done that mind set." I explained that for us the beach is so so,my kids get antsy by day 3 and really start to hate the sand and salt. At WDW we stay in a suite, we have 4 kids can't do regular room, have had the free DDP for the last 5 years and the kids are engaged all day, we take 1/2 naps often and get lots of pool time. The other families had similar reasons for enjoying WDW. The questioning families mentioned lines, heat, over tired kids but mostly stress and needing a vacation after the WDW trip.
It comes down to personal prefrence, I could not camp often though out the summer or spend two weeks at the beach or on a house boat with my kids with out getting stressed. The Pro WDW families and the Anti WDW families had the same feelings about each others travel choices. The conversation was funny and informative and I don't think any of us will scoff at others vacation choices any longer. We choose what works for our families.
As for cost, our weeks in Destin with my family have cost about 500.00 more than our WDW trips. Mainly because of off season travel and the free DDP. I quickly site that cost comparison with any one who argues with us on cost I also bring up thier travel to sking destinations, Vegas and all inclusives in the Carribbian, the conversation usually ends there.
Haters gonna hate and I no longer try to get them to feel the WDW love.

I am so jealous! DH and I always talk about how nice weekend trips to WDW could be, the 14 hours from KY is just to far:(

We get the "again?" question all the time. People need to realize that everyone works for a reason.....to live. And to me, Disney and my family together is living. Some people spend their money on lavish toys for their kids, some spend money buying things that are not necessary then they regret it later. Believe me, no matter how much is spent on my trip (coming up May 26th), I will never regret spending every dime and I will enjoy doing it too. Everyone have a wonderful day! Remember our Disney memories are forever.:);)

Yes, all the time from certain people in the family who can't understand why we go at least once a year. While they own a timeshare at a beach, we decided to go with Disney, I do not understand how they can go to the same beach that doesn't change and its the same week every year and then turn around and slam us. I have learned to just let it go. To each their own...it may be a pain, and I may not like it but I doubt I am going to change their thoughts, as they have yet to change mine.

Me too! Well, not a barn floor. But there are some improvements that we could do around the house, like install granite countertops in the kitchen. But our current laminate counters are fine, they aren't broken, they aren't even old. They'll do just fine :)

This is a great topic. I thought I was the only one that felt like I was being judged for my choice of vacation destination. I've been very fortunate when I was growing up to be able to travel a lot with my family, both domestic and international. I loved all of those trips. But the place that stuck with me the most was WDW. It's where I had the most fun and have the most fond memories of. I'm not opposed to traveling to a different destination than WDW. I just know exactly what I'm getting when I travel to WDW. I'm getting impeccable service, guaranteed fun, and memories that will stick with me for the rest of my life.
I've worked hard to earn the living I do now. It hasn't come easy. I wish people would respect that and what I do with my money is my business.

Most people just say "again?" but no one really ever slams us or makes snide comments about it, except for my aunt. She is rather well off and owns a home in south Florida that she rents out. She usually makes comments like "Oh, Disney, again? Why don't you come to my beach house. I'll give you a good deal" She's very condescending the way she speaks to our family sometimes. I try to ignore her but it's hard.

I say to each his own. We like Disney and we go 2-3 times a year. Yes, it is pricey. Our 7 night trip this month is just over $1500 per person including our AP, hotel (All Star Sports) flight, all dining and snacks, TIW card and Photopass+. Our AP and TIW card are a one time purchase and we have never gotten the PP+ before so it's a little pricier this time. In comparison, our 5 night November trip will be a little less than $1000 per person because we don't have to buy park passes or TIW card. So some trips are much more expensive than others but we cut corners here and there at home to make it work.

If we have found something we love, who cares? More Disney for all of us and the haters can go elsewhere!! :)

The other thing about my Aunt and Uncle is that when they tease me about going other places and I mention how they go to the same camping destination every year, they reply that they do go other places, too. Yes, but I am not up in my 60's, almost 70, retired from the railroad with the ability to go on vacation any time I want throughout the year. My wife and I both work full time and we get so much vacation time a year, and we only have so much money so we can't be going all over the place as much as we would like...although we are going to Mackinac Island again in a few weeks, having gone there in 2011 as well, in addition to our annual WDW trips.

My Uncle will also reply that their week camping at Cloud 9 Ranch is also alot cheaper than going to WDW. That's debatable. Yes, the vacation itself is probably much cheaper than the trip to WDW, but they have one of those big bus sized RVs to drive there. How much do those monsters cost, about 70 grand? So I am not purchasing a vehicle the price of a house just to go to WDW every year like they are, so in the grand scheme of things, their trip habits probably cost alot more than ours.

And then there are my Dad and my brother who both think I am squandering money to go to WDW every year. My Dad is the type who thinks I should be saving back money for college and inheritance to give to my kids when we croak, hence we didn't take many vacations when I was growing up. But we lost our Mom in 2006 to a car accident, so my Dad is a widower, yet he paid cash for a brand new car so he can have a secondary vehicle as a single person, and he forked out about 14 grand for a jacuzzi tub. My brother wants to buy the best of everything when he spends, so he bought a new vaccuum cleaner for $500 bucks, he has to have the big flatscreen TV, all the latest gadgets, etc. I'm not knocking any of that, mind you. If that's what they like, that's fine and it is their money to spend as they see fit. If vacations are not important to them, that's fine, to each his own. But what angers me is the hypocrisy of them thinking I'm squandering MY money by enjoying my family when they will turn around and fork out all this money on the things I described.

I live in Maryland, about 3 hours from the beach. And up here the Atlantic ocean is not something I like to swim in. I can go to WDW for 7 nights, park tickets included in middle of July and stay at POR for about the same price as I can go to Ocean City for just a room at a similar hotel. No free transportation to attractions, no food court, nothing special. I have friends who go to the same hotel and do the same stuff same time every year and when they ask how can I go to WDW every year I just tell them they don't understand.

I wrote this somewhere on here already, but same up here in Jersey. A week at LBI is not cheap either and it's about a quarter of the fun (IMHO of course :)). But people seem to go back there year after year, which is cool for them if they like it.

We've gone to Disney my whole life! While there were years we didn't go, it's always been there. We enjoy it. Now that I'm married, my husband is on the bandwagon too. While we won't be getting annual passes this year (like the rest of my family), we are going for our anniversary, just the two of us. We do want to go other places. DH has never been to DC or NYC, so we hope to be able to go to one of those locations later in the year. I get the "You're going to Disney again? You should visit other places." line alot! I know people don't understand it. I love it because it makes me feel like a kid again.

I think there is a time and a place for everything. My MIL is retired and all she does is go on these big touring trips with a big group of people. She goes to all of these different countries and the group all stays together and they tour around. Yuck! But that's her thing right now, I don't say anything. But of course, she gets to act all cultural about it. That's where the snobbiness comes in.

You guys ever deal with friends or relatives that make snide comments because you just went or are going on another in their words "expensive" trip to WDW?

Yes, I also get criticized for only to go Disney for vacations. A lot of people make snide remarks that "i'm rich" and I am so clearly not. I only shop sales and coupon like crazy and am a budget crazed person so I CAN go to Disney. I work hard to make it happen so it makes me so sad/mad/crazy when I hear them stuff like that.
