GIS Mapping/Surveying going on at 20K area!

The Conundrum

New Member
I wonder if by Toon town he meant fantasyland in general.

I think its certainly plausable since The Little Mermaid is about to begin construction in California any month now and Disney may want to start the florida version at the same time. This would also help them have SOMETHING to hype up when World of Potter (aka the big one) opens up.

I just wish the 20k plot would be used for something more than just a clone of a DCA ride. They could have created a new submarine voyage, a version of the Nemo subs, a new e-ticket, Villian Mountain, or even use the space for multiple new dark rides (like the ones in Disneyland like Pinnochio, Alice in Wonderland, Casey jr., etc.)

This is a great attraction to clone though, and there will still be room for another E-ticket on the plot. And believe me, this will be an E-ticket.

I`d hazzard a guess there arn`t current, accurate mappings of Toon Town available since it was `temporary` 21 ago. Since the 20K plot would need to be mapped it`d make sense to do both at once.

I wouldn't be surprised if Toontown was invloved in the makeover. Back in 2002 when I still worked at Disney I heard first hand from Al Weiss that the plan was to use the 20,000 spot to enlarge not only fantasyland but also Toontown. They really wanted to enlarge toontown because of the narrow streets and traffic it causes. I belive they wanted to move the entrance of toontown further over by the 20,000 location. Don't forget this was 7 years ago so more than likely this has changed many times by now. However, there is still a need to to fix toontown so this might finally be the time.

I wouldn't read anything into this whatsoever IF it is happening.

When Iger, Staggs and Rasulo open the coffers and give the go-ahead to Mermaid then you may have reason to get excited.

FWIW, I was told that Disney is still trying to get this attraction approved for one of the international resorts BEFORE MK. But I am not sure I believe that is a must for it to happen here.

There is a survery marker in ToonTown. It's in the curb outside of Minnies House.

It's a Disney Marker and unnumbered. No going to use it for any sort of control surverys, but it is there. Means sombody though of establishing a benchmark when the "temporary" land was built.

I'm guessing the overseas approval of Mermaid would be for DLP- with its 20th coming up.

Mickey's Toontown Faire is really miserable compared to DL's. I say destroy it and build something new and better...

This is what I have been suspecting they might do. It would really help with traffic flow and capacity. FL is by far the best place to enlarge the MK while adding great content. I really don't care what attractions they add, I just like the concept of integrating Toontown into FL instead of Toontown being the "dead end" it seems to be now. It's really makes perfect sense for them to go this route.

Now if they could either turn the speedway into a futuristic attraction or remove it so that the new expanded FL flows better into TL, I'll be a happy MK fan. :)

WOOOOOO, Props to all GIS'ers :)

GIS Tech for 911 checking in haha.

(I'd love to do some GIS work for Disney, would be toooooo cooooool)

2. Why would they be mapping Toon Town?

It could be basic mapping going on, it doesn't necessarily mean anything will be added. The purpose of a GIS is to create a map that has layers of information. They could possibly be mapping out the buildings and attaching info about the buildings (capacity, layout, etc) or they could be doing the water/sewer systems (pipes, flow, etc) for future reference. It could be anything though.

Fellow GIS'er here. I used to do GIS work in Melbourne, Florida and always kept an eye out for any jobs at Disney but no luck. That would be the best job, but alas I'm now in the wonderful world of sewer mapping! :hurl: :D

I work day-to-day with a group of Geomatics Engineers.... Trust me "too much detail" is genetically encoded into each and every one of them!

Hah, I did some sewer/water board mapping with my last job. A lot of fieldwork and taking GPS points of fire hydrants and sewer covers haha.

I have no doubt in my mind. Come on, jake, I figured you of all people would enjoy some optimism from me!
You are prejudging, just like you and most people around here do everything. Whether it is good or bad, wait until it is out before making up your mind.

Here's my take on it

I'm guessing they are probably doing some drainage studies on different areas of the parks as a whole. Over the years the State of Florida's requirements for water retention keep going up, so it could be a possibility that they are looking at A) how much area of paved area verses grass/sodded area they have to calculate how much rain water run-off is being produced. B) probably looking at some offsite water detention increases to meet new standards. With all the flooding that has gone on recently with the hurricanes, all the states are uping their requirements. I work at a Civil Engineering firm in Alabama and I'm by no means an "expert", but thats my take on it.

You're impossible, jake. And now I know you're just looking for someone to reply to you. And this is the last time I will.
