Anybody seen The Wind Rises yet?
It was good, stand up ghibli film not sure if its going to be the winner, but I liked it better than the croods. To me its between Wind Rises and Frozen, and now that its not Hayo Miyazaki's last film I feel Wind rises lost some of its edge.

I think The Lego Movie looks hilarious. Batman cracks me up in those commercials!

"Who are you here to see?"

"I'm here to see - your butt!"

*kills guy*

*throws things attempting to hit a button, then finally hits it*

"First try!"

Based on 96% reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and really cute trailers I took my wife (we are in our 50s) and our 21 year old son to see it today. We are all animation fans and it looked really fun. We were the only people in the audience without small children (not always the best sign). In short............none of us liked it. I would call it a really cute kids film with limited appeal to adults without a kid in tow.

There are a lot of pretty funny jokes and the animation is extremely unique. In the end it felt like a giant commercial to me.

I just can't get the super positive reviews, but apparently there is something in the film thar is grabbing people.

No matter what happens, the film is going to initially come across as a commercial because of the primary subject matter of the film; it has the corporation's name in the title. Thinking that the film is nothing more than a big commercial is a very cynical way to look at it and completely ignores the primary purpose of the story.

Hell, before Frozen came out, being the animated film cynic that I usually am, I thought Sven and Olaf were nothing more than shoehorned-in characters meant to sell toys and continue the story through crappy short films and theme park appearances. They were the cute, lovable animal characters that drive merchandising sales. Luckily, the film was better than I thought it would be, and those characters actually served a purpose.

The Lego Movie plays like a family version of Who Framed Roger Rabbit? in the first 2/3 of the film, and it's a fine, funny romp, but the last 1/3 of the film, which I won't spoil, is what makes the film special. It shares a message that it ideal and essential for both kids and the kids-at-heart. For what Toy Story 3 had to say about growing up, The Lego Movie is just as, if not more, successful in what it has to say about the internal battle between strict order vs. unfiltered creativity.

Also, it was incredibly funny. But I knew that going in, because everything Christopher Miller and Phil Lord have written and directed (Clone High, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, 21 Jump Street, and hopefully 22 Jump Street this summer) have been hilarious.

Not everyone likes every film. Lots of people loved The Lego Movie. I really hoped to. I admired it, but it didn't resonate with me. To suggest that I didn't get the story is a leeeeeeetle cynical. And I, btw, thought the last 1/3 was the worst part. They shot for the moon (got to admire the effort) but missed IMHO. Successful animated films are good for everyone tho and I wish it well.

I didn't say everybody should like every film. Personally, I don't emotionally connect with Frozen, but I appreciate some of the songs, voice acting, and animation.

I do think, however, you're incorrect that The Lego Movie is a kid movie with limited appeal for adults. I truly believe that the last 1/3 puts it in the same category as Toy Story 3 where adults will get much more out of it, emotionally, than kids will. I thought it was a very ambitious effort, and they succeeded exceptionally.

And I didn't call you cynical or say you didn't get the story once. I believe that we can safely say that most of the moviegoing world was cynical about a movie based on a building blocks toy company with no narrative, myself included (until I saw the first teaser and the personnel behind the writing and directing).

Shame you didn't enjoy it much, but I will strongly argue that this was primarily a kids movie with limited adult appeal; I truly believe, objectively, that it is a fair 50/50 split.

Same here I saw it and have no idea how it did so well with critics at all? Did Lego buy off all these critics? The film to me had about as much appeal as any of the other lego direct to dvd films. The gags were every 3 seconds although the movie was beautiful the film just lacked heart or really any sort of plot that would engage someone over the age of 5 or at least resonate with them. Toys are for playing sure, but there wasn't a better way of sending that message than through will Ferral and his weird model city? I just didn't get this one at all, shame to I am a huge fan of animation and really, really, really wanted to like this film. I played with lego's all my life and yet still couldn't connect to this film, it did make me wanna buy some of the lego sets from the film, but that's about it.

And THAT'S how I felt about "Frozen". I don't get all the hoopla. To me, it's a step below "Wreck-It Ralph" in terms of entertainment value, plus it's yet another case of Disney "borrowing" from "Wicked". I'm glad it's a hit, of course, since it's from the Walt Disney Animation Studio, but it's still - to me - mediocre as heck.

I think we all have to remember to be respectful to each other for their opinions. Sometimes it seems like people feel that there is a hidden agenda. That's the power of these boards. I look forward to the same robust discussion around Captain America which hits my theater in 6 short weeks!
