Frozen

Seeing as it hasn't been mentioned yet, Frozen made $1.9 million yesterday, enough to bring it's current domestic to $300 MILLION! It now joins a list of 7 animated films that have grossed over $300 million, and is only the 3rd Disney/Pixar film to accomplish the feat. It's next milestone is to take over Despicable Me 2 as the highest grossing animated release of 2013. I don't think anyone at Disney Animation Studios or just about anyone could have projected the success of this film, and the crazy fact is that it's still going strong. I have seen Frozen about 4 times in theaters, and with my mom having yet to see it, I'm probably going to see it once more.

It has a very good shot at beating DM2.

It has an outside shot at hitting 400 million. It needs 2 real good weekends.

On the boxoffice forums there is talk of it maybe hitting 1 Billion worldwide. Need big numbers from Japan and China.

However the leaked online copy might prevent that.

I remember its debut weekend when optimistic predictions had it at 250 million. WOW!
And on a side note it's so refreshing to see a Disney song catch on this strong. People at my work place - who haven't even seen the movie yet! - are humming Let It Go on a daily basis. I bet this is how Disney fans felt in the 90s. :)

That or "Do You Want to Build A Snowman". Though Let It Go seems to be the big hit- I've seen a ton of fan covers on youtube, including a metal one.

The metal really kicks in at about the 1 minute mark.

Love it ! It's a fun cover. Like that he kept the original lyric "looks like I'm the queen" Most guy covers change it to king.
I am quite terrified to touch that play button.
No fear it's not death metal or anything. It's more pop/metal. Style reminds me the the Darkness song I Believe in a Thing Called Love.

I doubt it can cross DM2 domestically, but it has a shot globally. I hope it does because DM2 was a huge letdown for me, while Frozen is my favorite. In any case case you are correct in that it caught WDC by surprise. I was at Disneyland in early December and there was very little merchandise for sale. I did see quite a few little Elsa's and Anna's running around tho.

Knowing Disney's obsession with merchandise sales, there has probably been a huge order and stocking of Frozen merchandise on the store shelves in the parks in response to the throngs throwing money at this film. DM2 was a let down for me as well, so a part of me really wants Frozen to surpass it. Though it's a sequel, so it's like comparing apples to oranges. Imagine how a Frozen sequel would do (I do not support a Frozen sequel at all btw, just speaking hypothetically).

I don't think a sequel for Frozen is needed either; however, the setting is rich enough that you could set other films in it. For example, I think Weaseltown (WESELTON!) would be perfectly suited for an adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's "The Shadow".

I read the synopsis and while I find it highly interesting, I don't know how Disney would adapt it to be more family friendly (unless they want it to remain a bleak, tragic tale). But in the right hands, this could be a great, at the very least, interesting film.

Disney has a pretty good track record when it comes to getting happy endings out of bleak, tragic stories. Jungle Book, The Fox & The Hound, Hunchback of Notre Dame, etc.

If Frozen only drops 27% each week from here on out it will pass Despicable Me 2. Very likely because that is basically what Tangled did this stage of its run.

If Frozen only drops 19% then it will hit 400 Million. Tough but possible. Everyone needs to get out and see it again. :D

Frozen is doing great in South America... already did great in most of Europe. Unlikely to hit 1 Billion. Would need to do great in Japan and China and doesn't open there until March.

Non-Holiday weekdays have been low which is expected for a family film. It beat 1 million yesterday meaning its streak of days over 1 million will hit at least 47.

Frozen needs a big weekend.
