Frozen ride replacing Maelstrom?

I don't see how anybody could not understand how incredibly wrong this would be.

It's almost as bad as if they had decided to replace a charming boat tour of Mexico with a nonsensical series of videos where a Brazilian parrot searches for an American duck. Oh, wait...
I kind of get the idea of utilizing characters as a weenie. It is supposed to be the something familiar that gets people interested in entering the land where they can then learn. As I have stated previously, I just don't see any evidence that this strategy actually works as the park is not more popular now and interactive museums are where we are seeing the biggest growth in themed entertainment.

What I do not understand is how those who are supportive of the idea can argue that there will still be an actual Norway Pavilion when this is done, especially following a lot of the very basics demonstrated by the Armchair Imagineering that has occurred. Just because Disney may continue to call it the Norway Pavilion and staff it with Norwegians, it is hard to make the case when the overwhelming majority of the content is not about Norway itself.

Lol!

At least the Mexico ride features cultural aspects of Mexico, places to visit / things to do, even a map of the country at the end. Somehow I don't see that happening to Maelstrom.

As much as it pains me to admit, I gotta give you that one. At least if you manage to look past Las Locas Aventuras de Donald, there is still some semblance of the culture of the host country there.
I also assume that Frozen in Norway will contain absolutely no educational aspect about the nation. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that Norway itself no longer has involvement with the pavilion. This furthers my fears for the future.

That's kind of my point. If it was going to be, say, Olaf taking guests on a tour of Norway, with a reference to the movie here or there as it relates to Norwegian culture, that might be more palatable. But based on the rumors, it sounds like a cheaper version of any of the movie-based dark rides at MK, just on a boat instead.

This is what scares me the most. There's no way Frozen is going to be contained to just the ride if this happens.

They might as well start getting the new Arendelle Pavilion stamps ready for the Passport books now.

Sadly, culture takes a back seat to bright, shiny, pretty objects for the "lowest common denominator crowd" (which seems to be who Disney wants to impress). They could probly put card board cut outs of Anna and Elsa next to the polar bear and the rubes will look like they sat in chocolate pudding when they exit the boat.

That's what is sad to me. I even understand having character meet and greets in the countries they are from. It's something for kids to do between educational activities. But they could easily accomplish that in Norway by adding the sisters to Akershus or even making them the main characters at the restaurant. There are enough actors in there that they could easily train to be the sisters and Olaf. They could always refurb Maelstrom to update it without losing its character.

Another sad point is that, by the time they get around to refurbing and reopening the ride, the hype over Frozen will have probably diminished significantly anyway. They might as well take their time and devote a whole new ride to the film and put it in the correct location (NFL imo).

IMO Disney should keep Norway as is, and make "Frozen" something bigger.
Look what Universal is doing.... They have the "Harry Potter" right and Disney
has the "Frozen" right. I know disney JUST finished the New Fantasyland HOWEVER
if they build Elsa's castle, and maybe a dark ride with beautiful effects people would flock to it.
I'm not saying this area would last seeing that it's focus is just on one movie... But if Disney decides to use Frozen, I think it should be more than replacing a classic ride.

Yes a ride is a good idea, just NOT Maelstrom.

People on this board are mourning the demise of Maelstrom, but I have yet to see any really solid evidence that there's anything to mourn...yet.

I mean, I respect the insiders here a lot, and if they all say it's happening, I guess it's happening...but are they saying it?

IS it happening?

Centerpiece in the new Marketplace Co-Op is stuffed with park and land specific merchandise. Much of it is retro and all of it is pretty cool.

Well, if there's actually some original and unique stuff, then I can see parting with some cash. I'm not a shopper but anytime I can stock up on gifts that can't be found at a Toys R Us or Target I'm happy. Last time I looked it was all just junk that could (for the most part) be found just about anywhere.

Just a minor update regarding Maelstrom, it looks like the walls are down with new painted rockwork, but no waterfall. Anyone know more? Is the water going to return or is this the new permanent fix?

And again, with them hyping up the Enchanted Snow Palace concept as an inspiration point on the Blu-Ray, they should just build that with Frozen characters mixed in over at Fantasyland, not this lazy job.
