Enchanted Tiki Room closing for month long refurbishment

Also noticed that the water feature alongside Tiki across from Carpets was drained or turned off... it has been 'weeping' through the seater/bench rockwork for a while now.

The busiest time of the year and they are closing an attraction that can eat people...not sure this makes much sense.
There is no busiest time of year anymore.
This is awful news. Bringing my 4 year old DD for her first trip and I really wanted her to see it. Wasn't it just down for renovations last year anyway?
See...Disney can't win.

People because Disney doesn't provide maintenance.

Then the same people when Disney does a refurb...

"Not when I'm there...do it some other time...Inconvenience others, just not during MY vacation.

This. The only thing that would warrant a complaint about a refurbishment happening is if it opens with still-broken show elements (or in Kali's case, reopens with an even greater amount of broken show elements than it had before it was closed). If these refurbs ensure the rides remain in show-ready condition, bring them the hell on and continue as needed. If anything we need even more of them, particularly in the other 3 parks. Though we do need a lot more quality ride experiences in ALL the parks to soften the blow from having a ride offline for some time.

I usually don't like to silence people for an opinion, but refurbs are not something that should be a topic of complaint regardless of what ride it is. Not now that WDW needs them more than ever because the place has been literally decaying for the past decade or two due to a lack of proper maintenance.

Totally agree. We need to keep Disney on their toes when it comes to the show quality. If an attraction re-opens with stuff still broken, they need to know about that.

We do not need to complain about refurbishments occurring during one's vacation. There is absolutely no way to do a refurb that results in a ride closure without it affecting someone's vacation. Disneyland has little closures all the time. Their stuff looks great. WDW needs to have these sorts of closures all the time too. Each month of the year there should be a handful of attractions closed for a short refurb in the same way you get your car's oil changed every 3 months.

The more we get used to a regular refurb schedule, the sooner it becomes part of the nature of visiting WDW - something might be closed on this visit...which means you can look forward to it being even better on your next visit.

This is the sort of attitude that causes WDW attractions to rot away. Attractions all need regular maintenance all the time. You can't do that sort of maintenance without closing the attraction for a bit of time. Big picture - she will be able to see the Tiki Room on her next visit, and it will be better than ever because of the proper maintenance that was performed this upcoming late summer.

Jimbo's referb wish list:

1. Add the fountain. I cannot imagine this one costing much at all. The time it takes to install it and reprogram the show would be less than a week. It would add an element of depth and it mixes well with the other items on the list.

2. Move the Dole Whips to the Sunshine Tree Terrace. They already have the machines. The Dole Whip line is already so incredibly long all the time, they could probably keep both stations serving Dole Whips. Seriously, how many times have you skipped a Whip because the line was too long? Demand is high, supply is short. Plus, they always blast the rocket jet A/C at the current stand and it half melts the Dole Whips before you can get them out the window. It really takes away from the experience when you are too busy scarfing a dripping Whip to enjoy it.

3. This is the most important one, and I have stated it time and time again... ALLOW DOLE WHIPS IN THE SHOW!!! You want more income from an attraction, encourage spending along with it. Worried about messes, try using bigger cups with the Whips.

By adding these simple changes, I would venture to say that Disney could increase their combined sales at Sunshine and Aloha Island by 30%. It would encourage attendance on the attraction itself by an increase of 20%. It woud also help more popularize the Dole Whip into the culture of WDW guests and help merch sales. No brainer as far as I am concerned. These all work perfectly for Disneyland. I cannot see why they wouldn't for WDW. Oh, some of that Tiki Room 50th merch sold very very very well. Make it a relaxation station at the park instead of the dumb robot bird show. Imagine promoting it for 15-20 seconds during the Must-Do channel at the hotels. Encouraging the purchase of the "most beloved park snack in all of Walt Disney World. One of the only locations in the world where you can get a Dole Whip. Not only that, but relax and enjoy the cool show."

At that point you have built the Dole Whip brand. You have added new value to the Tiki Room. You have targeted a new audience that is virtually ignored, the traveller searching for a relaxing vacation.

Hey, is Disney marketing hiring? I have some more simple, easy, no brainer ideas to help enhance guest experience tand drive income.

Because I was complaining about it before, was I? Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

is it just me or are there a lot more refurbs happening as of late? is this for NextGen or just more focus on getting everything up to par (or both)
It's just you. The ETR seems to get closed ever year for "refurbs", although it looks the same every year to me.

Your argument would make sense were it not for one thing: Disney is not listening to my forum posts. They'd never delay a refurb because of me or my vacation. My attitude is the attitude of everyone who goes to Disney World and finds that a ride they wanted to go on is closed. If Disney did things based on the whims and wishes of forum posters, we'd have one heck of a different park...

Also, I can't really afford to go to WDW all that often. So yes, while we will one day return, it may not be for a while. Who knows if Tiki Room will even exist then.

I agree with all of this. I'd only add that I wish the Imagineers would fix the flowers' lip-syncing. Last time I visited Tiki, they were still off. Looks lame.
