Downtown Disney update

It is impossible for DTD to have only one-of-a-kind venues and get enough third parties.

While it wasn't all of DTD, PI certainly had one-of-a-kind venues (not to mention small, fairly unique botique shops)--none of which were run by third parties, the vast majority of which were profitable. Of course, if you'd never gone, you wouldn't understand the difference between, say, Mannequins and a typical club in downtown Anywhere USA.

Martin, is there anything SERIOUSLY happening at DTD/PI? It seems like you all keep hinting there are plans, but nothing ever happens.
Somethings are planned. I've heard many many plans the past few years and tbh aside from a few things that look definate infrastructure wise, I don't know what will finally be done for entertainment.

Why not build something like this:

http://www.powerplantlive.com/index.cfm?page=about

If you incorporate live entertainment with interesting bars/clubs it will draw crowds and I am confident that Disney could do it even better. If this works in Baltimore why not DTD?

OK finally something I can truly talk about. I live outside Baltimore and just was at this venue last week and absolutely it is much like PI. I just saw Richard Lewis at the comedy club there (sound familar?). It is gated but free to enter. It is incredibly popular. They have private security which do a phenominal job. No gangs of illbehaved patrons. I would like to see someone try it. They have a music venue that books national acts, sports bars etc. It really is the place to be in Baltimore if you are looking for nightlife. Also within walking distance is the Inner Harbor and some high end resturants. Honestly This was a great example of what an area of DTD could be. Much like PI they have a common area in the middle of the clubs. In the picture it is covered by that atrium looking structure. That is there so even in inclimate weather the party goes on! They have live bands on some nights and DJ's on others....sound familiar? What DTD has that Baltimore dosnt have is a captured audience.

I know more then anyone that Baltimore isnt exactly on the top ten list of cities to visit, but if Baltimore can do it and be susccesful I dont see any reason DTD couldnt do it. Then again as most have said over and over.....TDO would have to want to do it. The real question isnt if they could or if they could be successful. The real question and what it boils down to is if Burbank/TDO want nightlife at DTD. I dont think even our resident insiders know the answer to that question. Not EVEN you JT.

I know, why not build a bunch of country pavilions that would have restaurants and late night establishments...ops, it would be called Epcot. Seriously, let's have an after hours Epcot!

I was actually thinking "hey, let's build additional countries in DTD." Brazil could be everything, nightclub, lots of dancing, great food and unique gift items. I'm kidding (mostly), but hey, it's a good idea as any TDO has had.

Funny how similar that is to Pleasure Island...

When I saw this place I immediately thought of Pleasure Island too.

The company that built this in Baltimore built a similar project in Philly (Xfinity live). The Philly one is near the ball park and football stadium so more of a sports oriented feel. They still have a mechanical bull and a good venue for outdoor live music. If one of the problems is Disney does not have the experience in building or operating clubs why not hire these guys to build Disney Live or in Disney tradition sell the naming rights to some corporation.

I suspect Disney would be open to leasing a portion of DTD to such a corporation that would be responsible for managing and maintaining the area/venues. However, the asking price for those rights and the lease are probably so high that no group is willing to make the huge investment.

Disney knows how to build and operate clubs, they did it for 20 years with Pleasure Island. And, what naming rights has Disney sold? How is that the "Disney tradition"?

EPCOT pavilions = Corporate/Government sponsorships.

Kodak signs can be seen throughout the parks.

Coca Cola is a major sponsor found with signage all over.

they thought that third parties would be lining up at the door to join Disney's Lake Buena Vista Mall.

Ahh, you've gotten to the heart of the matter. As Jason71 has pointed out several times, new restaurants (and other experiences) have been built and are being built all over I-Drive and US 192. So while the economy did halt many projects initially, they're coming on strong right now. Just not at Downtown Disney. That has to say something about either Disney's vision for the area or the price they're trying to charge.....or both.

That is probably the biggest sticking point. Comes back to the issue of desire. If Disney wants to build up DTD and if they want to do it with 3rd party vendors then the price has to be right. They could build it themselves but clearly they have no desire to do that or they never would have closed PI. Letting someone else develop the venues and then just collecting rent seems to be a more economical way to get it done and shifts risk to your partners. The problem with this is you lose some control. You can't expect vendors to take a large portion of the risk and then try to control how they run their business. Doing a deal with a large developer who would manage multiple venues seems easier than trying to sign one off deals with multiple people.

Have you been to Epcot?
I don't follow every individual's posting pattern but it seems to me that the "blast-Disney-for-being-greedy" folks are usually the same people as the "What-would-Walt-do" folks. The implication here seems to be that the money grubbers at Disney are so eager for the almighty dollar that they compromise their standards by putting corporate sponsors in the parks.

Okay then, let's play "What would Walt do?"

Pepsi Presents Walt Disney's "It's a small world"
General Electric Presents "Progressland" and "The Carousel of Progress"
Ford Motor Company Presents: Ford's Magic Skyway
The State of Illinois Presents: Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln

"What would Walt do," indeed.

Here's a hint: We wouldn't be getting a major Test Track refurb if GM wasn't paying for it. Corporate sponsorships are excellent ways to get new and fresh attractions without cutting into the budget for other projects.
