Downtown Disney update

No major news here but an interesting tidbit... The project coming to Downtown Disney is now being referred to internally as "Downtown Disney Expansion." I think the use of the word "expansion" as opposed to update/rehab/retheme/refurb is at least somewhat interesting.
Is the hot air balloon ride still there

An interesting Tweet from an Imagineer, Andy Sinclair-Harris on his Twitter:

"well 2 things- our story links Tokyo TOT story and AC and I wouldn't rule out AC for WDW just yet ;)"

He's currently working on Mystic Manor I believe, so there's some hope for everyone with all the cohesiveness of the overarching story.

Just thought I'd share.

"More like one in a million."

So you are sayin' there's a chance?

I figured it was worth posting, but who knows how "in the know" he is regarding DTD plans. :)

My feeling is he is very much not in the loop. He isn't high level, although I believe he was at WDW last month. He is one of about 7-8 Imagineer types that Tweet with fanbois, but never really ever say anything of substance. They all seem to belong to some Orange Bird cult and never really rip anything Disney does (sorry, but a smidgen of real criticism might give you some cred) or even acknowledge that say other companies operate theme parks too. I believe Tom Bricker knows him (could be wrong) but either way, he'll likely pop in with some comments.

I do know there were some pretty serious plans to turn the Adventureland Veranda into an AC type food locale (much like what is happening at HKDL) when the Pirate buffet/show concept died a few years back.

But this idea that AC is coming back or PI is just is ... waaaaay out there.

Yeah.........just what we need around here.....someone fanning the flames that AC could return.

Next on Dr Phil.....JT04 discussing how drugs and roaming bands of thugs will return to the Florida hot spot.

I might consider discussing the PI problem with Dr Phil if he ever he found the time to show up here. But why would I ever consider leaving WDWMagic to go on his show? Let's get real here.

Forgive me as I've never been to the Adventurer's Club, but isn't part of the appeal lost if it has to be under the constraints that would be imposed upon on it if it was in a park? I would think it would be better if it was back in Downtown Disney, or in the Polynesian after the refurb.

Well it wouldn't be nearly as much fun if there wasn't any drinking ;) Kungaloosh!

OH FINALLY!!! I can head to lunch!!!

To answer your post, all I'll say is MANY of the AC regulars did not drink (alcohol, that is) and would spend the night nursing a virgin colada or a Coke.

Now ... lunch ... y'all have a MAGICal afternoon (meant only one way, unless your name is Frank!):D

Sorry, but I have to keep a Spirit honest on this one. What you're describing was in the last 1.5 years or so of the Club's existence--after all the other clubs went 21+, forcing all the CPs into the AC for a night out. (Most CPs don't have cars to get downtown, and there's only so many times you could go to Bennigans!) AC became the de facto CP hangout--a home away from Vista Lay, if you will--and alcohol sales reflected that.

In the 8 years prior to that, there were a handful of "regulars" who didn't drink--I could name them, literally, and I think most think of them as "the regulars" despite their being a tiny fraction of the frequent visitors--but for the most part it was a lot of lushes. You don't make thousands a night in bar sales selling Cokes and water to a hundred teetotalers.

And to answer RedSoxNo ... sorry, can't bring myself to finish typing that... 's question, it would not work in a park for any number of reasons. Even with alcohol sales (which is a huge part of it), the crowd would be all wrong for the humor. The AC was never meant to be a "wait in line, ride the ride, buy a T-shirt" experience, but that's what guests have come to expect from a WDW attraction.

I figured as much. I just thought I would pass the info along and let people with more insider knowledge dissect/confirm/deny.

Out of curiosity - what was the cover for Adventurer's Club? I was also one of the few who never got to experience it. :( Amazing that I hadn't even heard of it until they announced it's closing.

I think it was like $20, but it included admission to all of the other clubs. Unlike most of the other clubs, one could not buy admission to just The Adventurer's Club.

Closer to $25 at closing, which made annual passes (to PI) ridicuously cheap at like $60 or $70. I think they also had a 6-nights-in-a-row ticket for $30. Tickets at WDW are never simple. Even at that price, a surprising number of people bought a ticket and used it exclusively at the AC, or only used it elsewhere after 12:45 when the AC closed.

As for not hearing about it until it closed, I'm not surprised. As little publicity as PI got, it was generally grouped in as a "comedy" club. In fairness, the "word-of-mouth surprise" aspect of the Club made it very entertaining (most guests selected for shows had never been there before, and were rather shocked by the almost unDisney-like goings-on), and helped contribute to the rabid loyalty of its fan base. Having been to the AC almost became a secret handshake among the fanbois.

That was one of the things that I really loved about the Comedy Warehouse... they were allowed to make fun of Disney there. Pretty much all of the things that I remember from there have to do with making fun of WDW. Like the one with the "garbageman" from the Grand Flo...
