Downtown Disney update

First I dont need you to tell me what I need to do or not to do. I asked you a question to clarify a previous answer you gave. You choose to ignore it....thats your perogative. No on comes on these boards to be talked to that way. You come across like you are some kind of DTD expert/imagineer and only offer up opinions. There is a difference between a profit and a profit margin. If the buisnesses were doing so well the Magic shop....Starabillia would still be there. RR wouldnt have cut their hours. Anytime I have been there Bongos wasnt exactly busting at the seams. Niether was HOB. Fact is you dont know what these resturants profit/loss sheets say....do you? Dont assume just because they are open means they are exactly profitable. They all have a lease.

In one aspect you may be correct about taking revenue from other places....and not the parks. If PI was open with a resturant or two, I am sure Bongos would take a hit as well as HOB. Which could push them over the perverbial line.

P.S. No one said they were stupid.

Stupid is....is what stupid does....in this case....what stupid says...

The "need" comment was strictly rhetorical. I forgot that not everyone is over 25 here. I thought the comment was transparent. I'll try to keep the concepts a bit more basic for you.

Not sure what question I didn't answer that I have not answered before. It gets very old repeating the same things over and over. Not your doing I just fall asleep at the keyboard repeating the same points over and over. Especially because nobody can refute my opinions and disprove them with actual facts. When they can it gets my attention. Some people claim I know nothing and can prove nothing but then they fail to provide anything to refute my conclusions. Therefore they offer nothing.

If PI was the cash cow some claim I assure you it would still be open. And HW would be opening about now except certain management could not care less about DTD.

The DTD aspect of a Disney resort can be an integral part of a quality guest experience. Eventually someone will come along who realizes it. And it WILL sell AP's and DVC's. A lot of them.

Isnt there some quote somewhere....something about ...insanity....doing the same thing over and over?

They're all the same folks. Nobody ever believes me when I say this (and I say it a lot) but major projects at WDW are NOT planned in Orlando (for the most part). Orlando folks have a voice in the conversation but executive leadership is almost entirely in California and that's where the major decisions like this are made.

JT I don't always agree with you but the lack of a "controlled environment" is exactly the way to phrase the issue they had at Pleasure Island.
They did have a controlled environment at PI and they got rid of it. The second the took the gates down and let kids and parents with strollers pass through, it was over. The gangs that Disney and anyone else always tries to blame didn't start until around that time either. Not to mention they stopped marketing the place after Eisner left and you get the crap we have now.

Also, I saw Atlantic Dance Hall brought up earlier in this thread. We really shouldn't give Disney any kudos for that being there because for one, it's not even the most popular nighttime venue on the boardwalk. Jellyrolls across the way as normally WAY more busy. Actually, ADH is normally pretty empty, save for when there's a conference going on. Actually, the true story behind why ADH is that it was built as an overflow to PI so that if it got too full, there would be some place to send people. Yep, overflow to an island of clubs that are now no longer in operation.

I don't have much of anything to add in PI debate/discussion, but one of my biggest issues with DTD (besides lack of vision) is if they're going to have shopping as a major piece of the DTD experience, then please make it a unique experience. With all of the Disney properties available, it would be nice if they would exploit these things into a "you can only find this stuff here" kinda place. Maybe there isn't much of market for collectable Jungle Cruise replicas, vintage attraction artwork/posters, or even a Marvel Universe store front. When I go to Disney, I like finding things that really can't be found anywhere else. Anyway, just my 2 cents worth.

This is one issue where I probably agree with the suits about DTD. The really cool unique merchandise should mostly be in the parks. And they seem to be moving back in that direction. Unique Carsland stuff is flying off the shelves or is sold out driving home (pun intended :D) the point that this is an underserved market.

The parks need to have a magnitude of magic above DTD but that doesn't mean a generic DTD. It too should be magical to a degree. Winner winner chicken dinner. Luckily there is a Pollo Campero (yum) rather than generic golden arches. But DTD needs much much more.

I agree that in-park merchandise should be more unique and perhaps available in that particular park only. But I would really like DTD compliment that idea with boutique shops that perhaps cross promote a "sister" shop in the parks somewhere. Maybe something like "you can get 2 of 5 Jungle Cruise replica boats here, but the other 3 are available only in the MK.". I'm just thinking out loud. I'm a sucker for unique collectables, so I'm really only speaking for what may be a small minority. But, it's what I'd like anyway.

Pollo Campero is hardly unique JT.

I know this and the following point I have made at least three times before. But here goes.....

It is unique compared to the standard fare of BK or McDs (see Citywalk). It is impossible for DTD to have only one-of-a-kind venues and get enough third parties. What is not impossible is to have a collection of venues in one place that is not duplictaed anywhere else. So while you are right that places like PC and HoB, Splitsville and even Bongos are not "unique", people traveling from other regions will find something they have never experienced before. It is entirely UNIQUE to them! That is a business model with profound potential. That there are people walking the earth that can't see that scares me.

~empathy~ The numero uno requirement of an Imagineer (IMHO)

My point is, there is essentially no difference between having a MCDs vs a Pollo Compero, as far as uniqueness goes. I don't expect DTD to be filled with 100% only available there facilities. But don't pee on me and tell me it's raining. Pollo is not unique, having a more ethnic fast food option is not unique at all.

I'll take "less ordinary" over something that's in every city, town, and on every street corner. It's kind of like World Showcase. Yes, it may be an outdoor mall, but it's nothing like anything where I'm from.

Really? Because the entire enterprise is about your expectations? Get real please.
