Doctor Who (BBC & Disney+ 2023)

Ever since I was flicking around the channels and saw Doctor Who on Disney XD, I have been confused, and that has not stopped with this.

They'd've kept me as a subscriber if they actually streamed the library of existing episodes.
As far as I know as of now the only place to stream the entire past library is starting today on BBC iPlayer in the UK. Outside the UK they are currently not available, not even on BritBox which has the classic series (seasons) but not the new series (seasons).

If I were to guess if this becomes popular enough (which I suspect it will) it'll end up with past series (seasons) on D+ fully outside the UK in time.

Just know that moving forward all new series (seasons) will be available on D+ outside the UK.

The BBC iPlayer has most of the original series now including the animated episodes which were done for the DVDs.

It would be great if Disney animated the other missing episodes and put them onto disney plus but I suspect they are only interested in the revived series

Pluto TV has a channel with classic episodes but I don't want to live watch; I'm looking for on demand.

Getting those added to D+ would strongly tempt me back to the service for longer than a periodic month's binge. I'd love to do a full rewatch from An Unearthly Child onward.

Yes it would be nice if all of it went on to D+. My guess is that the back episodes are locked up for now with older BBC contracts, whether they are using them or not. If this proves to be popular, which as I mentioned I expect it will, I could see Disney pushing BBC to allow them to be put on the service.

I would imagine this even being just a phase one for the Disney/BBC relationship. I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't see other BBC shows making their way onto D+ over time as well.

I could see the BBC Disney tie up strengthening. Almost all BBC shows these days are made by independent producers so a deal with disney would probably work for both parties

I don't see Disney buying/leasing the whole Doctor Who library until:

1. the new Disney co-produced series is shown to be a big hit.

2. D+ turns a profit. And that is not scheduled to happen until sometime in 2024... and since it's not 2025 yet, will still take some time. Until then, Disney's not splurging on content until it is clear it drives subscriptions.

Besides the three part special, there will be a Doctor Who Holiday Special on Dec 25, 2023

This will feature the new Doctor for the full episode.

Will Disney have any Tennant episodes or anything? I have never watched a whole episode of old Doctor Who. The five minutes I watched was enough.
