Disney to buy Marvel Entertainment

Any or all of the Avengers would be cool in my book. The classic Avengers have always been my favorite Marvel characters.

(Although I really hated Iron Man after Civil War!)

Tony is such and interesting and dynamic character. Other than Peter Parker and Kurt Wagner, he is my favorite Marvel character.

For everyone who says Universal would sooner close down a hit ride than promote anything with corporate ties to Disney, how do you explain the continued presence of Shrek 4-D down the road from both WDW and Disneyland, considering that Disney now distributes Dreamworks films?

Not Dreamworks animation, though. They're an independent company.

THIS.

I don't understand why you blind Disney marks can't get through your heads. Indiana Jones. Star Wars. American Idol. Nearly everything in GMR. Twilight Zone. Aerosmith. TMNT, Ace Ventura, Goosebumps back in the day. IT'S NOT DISNEY. They pay $$$ to all the respective studios to use that stuff, and Universal does the same. Just because the studio they're paying for characters is just down I-4 makes no difference.

Disney and Universal... they're MORE than theme parks. From what I see on this board, people think that's all they're about and that there's this giant war between them because of two theme park destinations each down I-4 from each other. WRONG. The parks are a small, small slice of the pie. Disney DID NOT buy Marvel to get back at Universal for Potter, and Universal isn't going to change out Marvel for DC or Action Island or whatever crazy ideas that are floating around.

Those begging for Spidey at DHS or crazy EPCOT pavilion ideas with Marvel characters... get over it. Marvel Super Hero Island isn't going anywhere until UO decides to change it, thanks to that contract. A good amount of UO merchandise features the Marvel characters, and I don't think they'll be letting that slip away anytime soon.

Well then I guess Universal will be funding Disney's new rides and expansions down I-4 if they choose to keep the Marvel charecters :sohappy:

Are they really stupid enough to pay Disney to drive themselves out of business?

I've come around to liking him again thanks to Matt Fraction.

I still hate Civil War though (I am a Cap fan.)

It wont be as cut and dry as its being made seem on here. Someone with a spread sheet will be pushing numbers, and whatever suits Universal best will be the result. I have companies that I hate dealing with, but as long as it is prudent for me to keep using them I will, Im sure Uni will be no different.

I thought the intent was pretty clear. Uni is in the driver's seat and they are staying the course.

Now, if Disney did something that made Spider-man exceptionally unpopular, maybe they's pull the plug. But I don't think Uni's any more likely to pull the plug today than they were a week ago.

They didn't own Spider-man last week either.

I think you are wrong here. Uni's statement was pure lawyer speak to calm the turmoil. But they are clearly leaving open the option of moving Marvel out of IoA. And I think that is just what will happen. They gotta finish Potter first which has limited capacity.

The mouse has given IoA a huge headache. But it is fun and we could get some great new attractions once the dust settles. :)

If I pay a competitor a dollar so I can make five dollars, how is that stupid?

You seriously think that makes any difference? Cause, it doesn't.

Wait and see. Marvel Super Hero Island isn't going anywhere (unless Disney lawyers find some kind of loophole in the current deal).

Universal has made it very clear they DON'T want out of the deal.

This isn't even up to Universal. It's up to Universal's owners and for Disney to decide what is best for both resorts.

Oh and Disney always plays for keeps. Why do you think they only LEASE DVC units and not sell them? because they don't want anyone ever telling them what to do. They always makes sure they are on the winning side.

jt, if Uni moves Marvel out of IoA any time in the next 5 years I will eat my hat and post a picture of it.

This is pretty hillarious. It's me, gothmickey, jt, and sir goofy against the sinister cynics of the Disney forums.

Stop complaining OLD TIMERS!!

an all of you old timers complaining about the acquisition should shut up!!!
This is wonderful for Disney in the long run and is amazing for DHS a park that tries to cater to the youth. This is exactly what that park needed to get teenage boys going. No one is complaining that Darth Vader is like five minutes away from the muppets so why should wolverine and the x-men be any different???? There not much of a difference between Star War nerds and Comic book nerds anyways.

Embrace the new and stop clinging to the past!!!

(I know that currently there are no plans for marvel in DHS but I think that’s where it would fit in the best if they did decide to bring the characters to the parks.)

Now, now, I don't think Uni will be changing MSI anytime soon. 10-15 years down the road maybe. Not as quickly as you guys think.

I'm more focused on using properties that Uni hasn't.

And finally, the Sinister Cynics are the people who are anti-Marvel in WDW.

Some thoughts/guesses...

1) It seems that Disney paid top dollar for Marvel, making it a bad deal IMHO. They did it in the middle of a down market too, which makes it puzzling. I'll cede to Iger who is much smarter about that stuff than me.

2) I don't foresee Marvel having much of a presence in the parks in the near future. This is more of an ace in the hole, a property for Disney to use years/decades dow the road. For the moment DisneyParks seems infatuated with princess worship in the parks. Why change? As for now they can recoup some expense thru the movie division.

3) Disney benefits from a healthy happy Marvel Island over at UO. I doubt they'll do anything to harm that new revenue stream.

Well, it sure as heck isn't up to Disney! They can't back out of the deal unless someone finds a loophole.
