Disney to buy Marvel Entertainment

Some thoughts/guesses...

1) It seems that Disney paid top dollar for Marvel, making it a bad deal IMHO. They did it in the middle of a down market too, which makes it puzzling. I'll cede to Iger who is much smarter about that stuff than me.

2) I don't foresee Marvel having much of a presence in the parks in the near future. This is more of an ace in the hole, a property for Disney to use years/decades dow the road. For the moment DisneyParks seems infatuated with princess worship in the parks. Why change? As for now they can recoup some expense thru the movie division.

3) Disney benefits from a healthy happy Marvel Island over at UO. I doubt they'll do anything to harm that new revenue stream.

See I think if Uni drops Marvel, Disney will announce a Spidey ride the next day. Now we know what the Imagineer Disney got from Uni has been up to. They probably have him locked away designing Marvel rides. :drevil:

It's like watching a great chess match here! :D

an all of you old timers complaining about the acquisition should shut up!!!
This is wonderful for Disney in the long run and is amazing for DHS a park that tries to cater to the youth. This is exactly what that park needed to get teenage boys going. No one is complaining that Darth Vader is like five minutes away from the muppets so why should wolverine and the x-men be any different???? There not much of a difference between Star War nerds and Comic book nerds anyways.

Embrace the new and stop clinging to the past!!!

(I know that currently there are no plans for marvel in DHS but I think that’s where it would fit in the best if they did decide to bring the characters to the parks.)

Disney didn't sell Mickey Mouse to Universal because they aren't stupid.

What do you see as the all-important difference here? Cause I don't see a theme park rivalry as being any more important than a studio rivalry.

The theme parks are the difference. They are after guests, customers, money, your hard earned cash.

OK, let me make this analogy, may make some sense, hopefully anyway. A clothing store, STORE A, opens 10 miles down the rode from the more established STORE B. They both have their own clothing lines they sell, as well as contract out to other designers. Chances are you won't see the same designers in both stores due to contract agreements. STORE B then buys out one of the designers that sells clothes in STORE A. STORE B says the designer will keep the name and will be allowed to do what it has always done, but they collect the profits. STORE A has a contract with this designer that STORE B has to now legally uphold the contract. By the way, said designer DOES NOT have their own store.

Do you think STORE A will be happy with this? Nope, cause they are now selling and promoting their competitors clothing line. Is STORE B happy? Yes because they are making money off their competitor, thus adding to their bottom line making them even more successful that their competitor.

This may be a stretch, but it give the general idea.

I think we all know and agree that Marvel Island isn't leaving just yet. But, to say Disney buying Marvel doesn't change things is just not right. It changes a lot.

Plus Universal is shameless. They are just waiting for potter to open so they have the crowds to demand more money for a contract buyout to make it look like Disney needs the rights more than they do.

Disney WILL have IT'S Marvel Characters in IT'S theme parks, sooner than later. To think otherwise is just plain ignorant.

You don't spend 4 Billion dollars on a HUGELY popular universe of characters and NOT exploit them in every way possible.

Legal mumbo jumbo...lawyer rhetoric.... who cares? Does anyone honestly think that Disney's lawyers can't trump pretty much.....anyone elses lawyers at this point? You people all forget....

THEY NOW HAVE MATT MURDOCK TO HANDLE THESE THINGS!

LONG LIVE DISNEY/MARVEL!

I agree with you GothMickey. But In reference to your final paragraph I think, as lebeau has pointed out, anything Disney does with Marvel is also promoting Marvel in Universal, It does work both ways and that has been neglected so far in this thread.

You are right. It does work both ways. And true, that has been lost in 1000 posts.

For everyone who says Universal would sooner close down a hit ride than promote anything with corporate ties to Disney, how do you explain the continued presence of Shrek 4-D down the road from both WDW and Disneyland, considering that Disney now distributes Dreamworks films?

Goof already answered.

Well then I guess Universal will be funding Disney's new rides and expansions down I-4 if they choose to keep the Marvel charecters :sohappy:

Are they really stupid enough to pay Disney to drive themselves out of business?

Con, I am really starting to like your thinking. :sohappy:

jt, if Uni moves Marvel out of IoA any time in the next 5 years I will eat my hat and post a picture of it.

I am thinking once Potter shows it can be the anchor of the park, Universal will make a decision about Marvel Super Hero Island. Personally, I see it going, but not in 5 years.

This is pretty hillarious. It's me, gothmickey, jt, and sir goofy against the sinister cynics of the Disney forums.

Isn't is scary that we are no longer on the Doom & Gloom side??? Or even better, that you and jt agree??

Quite frankly, I expect an announcement of Marvel Super Hero Islands replacement shortly after Harry Potter opens.

I am with you on this. But, again, I don't see Marvel Super Hero Island shutting down in the next 5 years though.

That'd be cool if it plays out that way. I just don't think Disny gives a stink about developing any Marvel attractions ---for now. Better to cash UO's checks. I look forward to maybe taking my grandkids to a new Marvel-centric attraction at DHS someday. (note: my kids are 12 and 9).

Hidden Spideys? Im sure they already do that at BB and Typhoon Lagoon, Ive seen the legs at least.

Normally I find your remarks hit or miss, but this one definitely made me laugh.

And I think the theming on the over all Island is incredibly tacky. The huge, carboard cutouts of the superheroes/villains are terrible, and really take away from the city feel of the island. Disney would never do something that tacky.

The cutouts reak of Six-Flags level theming. It's a bit above Six Flags, but not really. I would consider The Hulk an unthemed coaster before I'd consider it a lightly themed coaster. I also think the ride itself is overrated. It's inversion after inversion making it disorienting to the point where you can't enjoy the elements of the ride. To me, Kraken over at Sea World is a better ride.

Spiderman is far and away the best ride in the park, and some would argue the best ride on the planet. The exterior cutout of Spiderman is meant to look 3D, but it doesn't really work. Once you get inside the building though, it's fantastic.

Look at it this way. The Spiderman ride has been around for 10 years, and Disney hasn't topped it yet. So what are the chances that Disney would have equalled the Spiderman ride if Uni hadn't built it? Not very likely.

Even if they could legally build it, I think Disney would have to be very wary about building a Spiderman ride as the current ride in Islands of Adventure would certainly be used as a basis of comparison. If Disney's Spiderman attraction fell short in any way it would be poorly received.

Disney didn't sell Mickey Mouse to Universal because they aren't stupid.

Nope, they did lose Oswald to Universal though...

I give it 2 to 3 years.

I'm guessing that Universal will look to pull the plug after Harry Potter is successful, or not at all. If they don't pull the plug in JT's time frame, I'd expect we'd be looking at 15-20 years at the minimum. If it's the latter they may remove the "Marvel" name and re-name it "Superhero Island" and base an attraction around another "non-Marvel" Superhero.

See I think if Uni drops Marvel, Disney will announce a Spidey ride the next day. Now we know what the Imagineer Disney got from Uni has been up to. They probably have him locked away designing Marvel rides. :drevil:

I don't think that's the case at all for the reasons I mentioned above. If Disney builds a Spiderman ride it would have to be better than The Amazing Adventures of Spiderman - I would think that such an attraction would be a huge investment, and I don't see Disney making this investment for Spiderman. I think Spiderman stays in Islands of Adventure - and if it doesn't, he will only appear as a walkaround character in Hollywood Studios.

If Universal is really going to get rid of Marvel, then I'm protesting and boycotting Disney! They can't take away a great land from Uni! First we lose Merlin Woods, now possibly Marvel?! BULLCRAP! :fork:

EDIT: I know Uni said they're keeping it, but if that happens, yeah.

Disney cannot take anything from Uni.

The ball is in Uni's court.
