Disney to buy Marvel Entertainment

OK...I know I'm chiming in late here, and I am no Disney expert, but I think something larger is in the works here. I'm also really not trying to stir the whole "5th gate" argument again, but...

Disney recently acquired Dreamworks, right? And now Marvel; both of which Universal relied heavily on. So now that Disney owns these two entities, what's next? There are those that want a 5th gate/Beastly Kingdom/Whatever...well, here's one that's already built. Change some signage and there you are.

I could be looking at this the wrong way, and maybe someone has already mentioned it, but could Disney be making a play at taking over Universal, piece by piece? That certainly would give Disney their 5th gate, all ready to go. Just add a place for the Disney busses to stop.

I wonder what Universal goes for these days? I thought of that myself, but listening to all the business stations talk about this deal, they refer to it as a no-brainer drop in the bucket deal for Disney that was pocket change to them. But I'd be OK with a bit by bit take over of Universal, although the parks themselves would have to be next right?

Oh cut the 5th gate rumours! The existing parks are far more in need of TLC and some new additional attractions before any ground is broken on a 5th gate

But Pumbas, it makes perfect sense! In order to compete with Potterland which is almost done they plan of building a park that will take at least 5 years of development to get open! The Sheriff's a genius!

The other parks are old and dumb, you should know that.

Incredibles comic series, anyone?
I see more items like this out of the merger rather than anything park related. It really seems like that this deal had very little to do with the parks at all.

Does Marvel have the brand recognition beyond the dozen or so big heroes/villians to be marketable?

I know I'm just speaking for myself, but I don't know half the folks you guys have been talking about in this thread.

This kind of seems like the equivalent of them purchasing Star Wars and fans wanting a Yuuzahn Vong dark ride. Those guys are huge in the Star Wars Universe, but how many regular folks know about them?

Universal Studios/pictures, falls into the General Electric family of companies. It may be very difficult to take Universal piece by piece if GE does not want to sell, unless they no longer want to be in the entertainment industry.

Universal does not trade in any stock exchane, but it's parent compnay GE does, going for around $14 a share. Also, taking a quick look at both Disney's and GE's balance sheet, Disney does not appear to have the equity to be able to take on GE.

As interesting and intriguing it would be to take over Universal piece by piece, it may be much harder that one would think.

I completely agree, and I still think it is a really good deal for Disney.

There is already an Incredibles comic series, the 5th issue just hit last week.

:veryconfu My boys drag me to the comic stand like every other week. First I've heard of that.

Who puts it out?

EDIT: I found it. Boom! Studios, who also puts out the Muppet comics. I've seen the Muppets, but not the Incredibles. If they're like the Muppets, they're glossier and pricier than normal comics, about $4 or $5 an issue, right?

Especially if it was based on The Dark Knight :drevil:. Is there any substance to an eventual potential DC replacement for MSI or is this just purely wishful thinking?

Universal was originally in serious talks with DC when Islands of Adventure planning began. They later on went with Marvel, but perhaps those talks may resume now that Marvel is with the Mouse...

Oh, and replying to the comment about Disney buying Dreamworks... Dreamworks' Live Action studio was purchased by Paramount in 2006 I believe and decided to break from their parent and recollect as it's own studio. Dreamworks Animation is a wholly own subsidiary of Paramount Pictures... They originally made a distribution deal with Universal, who backed out at the last minute, so Spielberg and his crew came to Disney, who accepted the offer. Disney will be distributing all Dreamworks Live Action films from here on out under the terms of this deal and did not purchase them.

Just figured I'd clear that one up...

I have faith that Disney will apropriately and tastefully theme the integration of Marvel characters (if that is the intent) into the parks. To me, that means DHS...For example, has anyone seen power rangers roaming Main Street or Chewbacca sipping a beer in front of the Biergarten??

I also maintain that this acquisition is a very bad thing for Universal. I don't care what agreements are in place between Marvel and Universal. You don't want your direct competitor owning the company that you pay licensing to. It's bad business, no matter how you shake it. Perhaps Universal will try to hold out for Disney to buy out the licensing contract...but I suspect at the end of the day, Universal will walk away from a buyout agreement leaving alot on the table.

I also maintain that if and when that happens, what is left on the table will be enough to take away something, in some quantifiable measure from Potter.

To anyone poo-pooing this deal, think of it in these terms. Imagine Apple Computers expected to utilize Intel chips for an indefinite period of time and situated their production (i.e. programming, R&D, production, marketting) in such a way that reliance on Intel's chips were necessary for the next 5-10 years.

Then, all of a sudden, Microsoft purchases Intel. There isn't a single Apple fanboy that would herald the purchase as a good thing for Apple.

Disney just bought a business segment that is going to net far more than $4bil and as an added bonus, it puts a not-so pleasant squeeze on a direct competitor. I'm finding it hard to understand how this is a bad thing....

The integration of Marvel into the parks may take some time, but once the deal is finalized and complete, I can see it happening in the not too distant future.

Here's what I'd like to see done at the parks with Marvel:

Marvel at Hollywood Studios: In terms of the current parks, this is the one that Marvel fits best in. I can see perhaps a Marvel based attraction appearing in Tomorrowland (maybe to replace SGE) but other than that, DHS looks like a winner for Marvel. I can see meet and greets with Marvel characters being the first step in bringing Marvel to the park. Hopefully some high tech new E-tickets will come later, or maybe be the anchor of a 5th gate...

Superhero version of Bibbiti Bobbiti Boutique: This just makes too much sense. Now sisters can be princesses and boys can be superheros. This would be a great addition to either Hollywood Studios (in a future Marvel based area) or to Downtown Disney inside my next suggestion.

Marvel Comic Superstore: This would be an excellent addition to Downtown Disney, perhaps as a replacement for Virgin (if something isn't already in the works). Marvel has the marketing power and existing merchandise deals that would make a really big superstore a great idea. Throw in a Superhero version of the Bibbiti Bobbiti Boutique and maybe a Marvel eatery and you have yourself a huge hit at DTD.

Marvel Resort: Another idea that would draw in lots of comic book fans. Why not make an entire resort devoted to Marvel characters? Allow guests to stay inside of Stark Tower or the X-Men Mansion with highly themed areas based on all four corners of the Marvel universe. Heck, including some kind of convention space for perhaps a future comic convention would be another great idea.

Marvel + Pixar: I know this isn't directly park related, but I would love to see what could happen when the creativity of Pixar and Marvel is combined. CGI movies from Pixar based in the Marvel universe would be fantastic and comics based on Pixar franchises such as Toy Story, The Incredibles and Monster's INC would be great as well. I really like the sound of a Pixar/Marvel pairing...

So there ya go... Some food for thought...

Welp less than 24 hours later and Fox is already playing hardball with the rights to Fantastic Four. I would imagine Sony will follow suit with Spider-Man and Fox will pull the same crap with the film rights for X-Men and Daredevil.

By the time Disney acquires all of the rights back for X-Men, Spider-Man, Daredevil, and Fantastic Four (Which outside of the Hulk, are Marvel's 4 biggest properties) Iger will most likely not even be the CEO of the company anymore. Seems like he got ripped off.

Oh I LOVED Muppet Babies! It was one of my favorite shows as a kid. Why the Muppet Babies dislike?

I watched it sometimes with my kids, and I gues that was the problem, it was so geared to little kids. The original Muppets appeal to kids and adults both and "A Muppet Christmas Carol" is one of my all time favorite movies.

Exactly. Disney doesn't have to do anything to cause Universal to want to dump the superheros. Universal will be paying Disney for the rights to use the Marvel heroes and I'm sure they will probably sooner rather than later decide that they don't want to do that and cut the contract short.

This is a great pick up for Disney that nobody could have ever saw coming. I'll be excited to see the Touchstone Banner up on an upcoming Marvel Studios production!
