Look at Sam Adams as an example -- the Boston Brewing Co. (SAM - NYSE) has never paid a dividend, preferring instead to send investors cute tchotchkies.

Look at their stock price (as of this post): $307.93, up $1.25 so far today.

They reinvest to make more money and the stock goes up.

Not that hard, Rockefeller

Then you get when you sell. It’s simple enough to actually make sense
But why would the stock go up if you can’t get the money out of the company?

It becomes an NFT without dividends. It’s just kind of there and is only worth anything if people want it to be.

Why would I pay money for a share of a company that made $10 billion if I can’t get my hands on any of that $10 billion? It doesn’t make sense.

Why? Anticipated future value. Buy low, sell high. Dividends are just icing on the cake.

Or maybe you need to shelter some income. Squirrel away some capital. Give gifts to grandchildren.

There are lots of reasons.

It does…

You buy it at $25 a share and sell it at $50 because they got $10,000,000,000 that they can use to last forever and/or make cool new stuff that people want.

But that’s not reality. So it’s just my idealism kicking in. I’m a “dreamer”

I don’t love that everyone thinks Wall Street To be a minute to minute casino…like draft kings.
When you hold the ability to destroy the world…I would love More “safeties” on it.

Just me. But I digress.

How’s the old DIS doing today?

Lemme guess: up $5+?
Those selling down yesterday are making quick bucks back today before they sell again?🤔

It has no future value. Why would it? You can’t extract money from it. The definition of a stocks price in theory is the NPV of all of its future dividends.

Other things people buy that don't pay dividends:
Gold, diamonds, silver, art, collectibles, land, houses, commodities.

Why? Because people expect that they increase in value over time. If they're right, they win. If they're wrong, they lose.

People obviously believe Disney has future value. Lots of people, including individuals, institututions and mutual funds representing big groups of investors. If they're right, they make money. If not, they lose money.

If they bought back in 2008 when DIS was $15 a share, they have a lot of room to wait out market fluctuations.

Nope - it was up for about 10 minutes, and only for $.50. Now it's negative again.
…so they bought AND cashed out?

See how great a “confidence game” is??!! Especially with super computers.

…ouch though…is the board meeting for a 4 pm announcement? It is Friday…afterall🤪

Let's see -- buy 2 million shares at 93.00. Price goes up .50 on the "perceived desire." Cost: $186 million. Sell 2 million shares at $93.50. Price goes down .75 on the "perceived aversion." But you gross $187 million on the sale.

You bank $1,000,000.

Very clever, Mrs Estherhouse!

Dead cat bounce

The dead cat didn't bounce off the sidewalk. Instead, the dead cat just rolled over and fell another 1% down into the gutter today.

It does not become an NFT. An NFT has not tangible assets other than the individual code behind it.

You're right... employees shouldn't get paid salaries either. Instead, they should put all their effort in, and pray for appreciation and get a payout when they leave the company. If they're right, they win. If they're wrong, they lose.

Salaries are dumb.
