News Disney Riviera Resort announced

Outside of Old Key West and Saratoga Springs (which are both themed) all of the current DVC resorts are attached directly to a deluxe hotel and share the theme of that hotel. To my knowledge there are no DVC resorts without a theme and this new one will have one too.

If it will have a theme, why are people so upset?

The artwork is the front of the hotel and Is facing Epcot. The back will face the lake. See the drawing below that shows the location of the hotel.

So... what if the concept art we're seeing is actually the "back", since the typical design of the grand "Riviera" hotels is to put most of the really ornate stuff facing the river, not the road?
I'm assuming, without evidence, that the resort's best side will the the lake-facing side, where the pool will be, and which, if WDI takes the obvious route, will have an arrangement of yachts and things "parked" in the water, possibly containing a bar and/or a restaurant.

Aren't DVC resorts a little generic anyway? Does it really matter if there's a big theme since these are DVC? There are plenty of themed already on property AND they are adding the Star Wars one. I am in the minority but it doesn't bother me. I will continue to stay in the hotels that I like and not worry about the ones I don't.

As Goof Goof said, there is a legitimate theme to DVC's SSR and OKW. Beyond that, the original addition to WL added a nice pool and a very pleasant seating/game area in its lobby. As much as the exterior of the DVC at GF doesn't match the original's exterior as much as could be desired, it's very, very nice on the inside. And Kidani Village at AKL is amazing, with an excellent pool and TS restaurant and beautiful lobby space with night vision viewing of the animals on its property.

I would say that the DVC resorts are often quite nice.

What I'm really curious about is what exactly is the theme for the new resort? It doesn't sound like they actually went into any detail, which I find odd -- couldn't they have said this was going to be themed to the French Riveria (seems like the most likely choice) versus other "Riveria" locations in the world. I think another Table Service French restaurant would be welcome to WDW, especially if it is outside the theme parks.

You might very well be correct, but why wouldn't they have created the art of the 'best' side if they were trying to show it off?

Unless the next version of Illuminations is completely different, they will get nothing but complaints if you can't see most of the show from a place where you are promised viewing of it from your DVC pitch.
The building would have to be significantly taller than planned to give guests a view of he lagoon.

They would have created art to show off it's best side...and I am sure they did....and you are looking at it. These pieces of art are not random quick computer generated things, they are purposely done to show off the best they can for marketing...and this is what they chose to release, and from a marketing standpoint, at this moment, this is the best view... there would be no reason to show the not-so-great side of a new building at a major press release.
The theme is ambiguous... the concept boring, and none of the DVC pools are as nice as what they have built at resorts like Cabana Bay... which is a shame. they can and should do better.

I don't think they really wanted to market or bring much attention to this project yet, they mentioned it because it is necessary since it relates to the gondola project. But at this point they don't want to take away from copper creek sales.

Also.. have you seen the aulani pool.

Yes...but they have not built the Aulani pool in any of the stateside resorts (in the continental USA)...

They easily could have upgraded the pools for the Polynesian to match the pool at Aulani and expanded it...likewise for the Grand Floridian, their flagship resort. They just completely redid the Wilderness Lodge DVBC area but the pool is once again, a plain pool with nothing like a lazy river or other features...

Hey team, I know there is a lot of talk on here about the theme and whether it will be French or South American themed. Watching the Olympics last year from Brazil, I remember a big story on how their public gondola transportation has revolutionized travel and modernized their workforce by allowing people in lower income areas to travel.

I feel like they see this as an opportunity to seamlessly add the gondolas into the themeing of the resort. Along with the rumored Brazil pavilion in EPCOT, I have to think the entire resort will become more Brazil focused. Lets not forget all of the tour groups as well...there is obviously a huge Brazilian WDW contingency. Dont you see a lot of similarities between the concept art and the Copacabana?

But they didn't need to. Those resorts are on the monorail with views of fireworks and Cinderella castle etc and are already highly desirable. This resort is not adjacent to any park and will need to have features that make it desirable. I fully expect an impressive pool area.

That art really looks like the front facing away from the lake. You can see the right side of the building sort of angling back they way it does in the plans. I also don't think they would have the road go around the building and come up to the entrance on the other side, that are would make much more sense for a pool.
