You never bring a stick to a gunfight, because you are going to lose every time.

Not always true even though it isn't the smartest thing to do really because you'll most likely end up shot. But I do know of times when the night stick has won over the gun, but not many. Anyways, you do have a good point.

Somehow I think you underestimate the fact that Stephen Colbert knows how to NOT get his face shot off. He's not stupid.

"Don't patronize me, Sir."
-Stephen Colbert

He may not be stupid, but he still doesn't know how to handle a gun safely. ;) Your finger does NOT go on (or over) the trigger unless you are prepared to shoot...period.

Reminds me of a scary story - I was teaching two of my friends to shoot and I went through all that safety stuff, loaded my 9mm semi-auto and my .38 single action and we were about to shoot round two. They had already shot round one so we were familiar with the guns and I just finished showing them how to load them, so they knew they were loaded. No excuse for what happened next.

My girlfriend picked up my single action, put it under her chin, finger on trigger and posed for a picture. I get sick thinking of what would have happened if she had chosen to pick up the semi-auto instead.

We almost had a Darwin Award winner right in my back yard.

She constantly asks when she can come over and target shoot again but I get an ulcer just thinking about it. :lookaroun

I don't sleep with my gun, but I sleep next to it, as it hangs in a cloth bag on my bedpost along with the remote controls for my TV and such.

There's too much temptation to shoot the TV during sporting events... :lookaroun

EDIT: Curses. Beaten to the punch.

That was your mistake; you should never try to teach a friend/relative to do ANYTHING. I've always hired professionals to learn how to drive, ski, shoot, etc. Much safer in the long run.

Not me, or my daughter, nor will my son. Now, they did learn to drive a manual from us/neighbors, but that was after they already knew how to drive a car. ;)

i'll stick with my sword collection they work just as well..ok maybe a lil more labor extensive :lookaroun

Definitely more labor intensive, but I have been known to keep one under my bed when my husband was out of town. :lookaroun (I used to fence, and we have a couple of military swords, plus a machete.)

My husband has a chinese-made katana, made in the traditional japanese way. The blade is gorgeous. We have some bokkens, but have just not known where to start with proper technique. I love the Zatoichi movies and they partly inspired our interest in Japanese swords.

 I bought a book from the Japan Pavilion called The Art of Drawing the Sword and it has tons and tons of diagrams, but the precision in movement required is daunting to me, as well as memorizing the steps.

Another thing about the katana is the ungodly expense to have it professionally resharpened. :lookaroun
