it's brilliant that this is happening. the amount of plastic that isn't biodegradable and that goes into landfill is just really quite scary. There was a program about it here in the UK just the other day, it was absolutely mind blowing and also quite terrifying at the amount of stuff that just gets buried and never breaks down.

While it is a brilliant move for the parks not to have plastic lids of straws available, i do hope they have suitable replacements/alternatives like paper straws or reusable non spill cups.

There are no replacements to the straws and lids planned. Unless you purchase your own Disney Straw or bring your own you will just be getting a cup.

Unrelated note security will now be checking for guests entering with plastic straws and lids.

I haven't read through the entire thread, but the only announcement from Disney I saw said straws would be available on demand and that plastic lids would not be available for adult cold beverages. Is Disney now saying that they won't provide lids for kid's drinks or for hot drinks?

As a parent of two toddlers, the last thing I need is to carry more crap around.

I don’t know you guys are able to go bagless with toddlers.. that’s awesome, but I couldn’t do it.
I threw an easily portable tumbler in my handbag or daysack and off we went.

I’t just me and my kid always together, so obviously I’m the only one carrying stuff. Never was a hassle to have that one extra item with me. Even now when I take my niece and nephew somewhere, I bring their tumblers and usually a few snacks in an easy to carry insulated bag.. that bag also fits in a small daysack or large handbag. Then again, I’m cheap and hate paying for bottled water if I’m out somewhere that allows me to bring my own.

I just can’t think of any time where we’d be walking around with a drink besides water or milk.. neither of which are served in a cup. I didn’t give my kid store bought juice.. but aren’t those served in a single serve bottle as well, and not a cup? What kind of fountain drink is a toddler drinking?

I just thought I would post these old pages if anyone was interested.

For them to make a profit on Tote bags in the parks...I would definitely would go for one with that retro design on it..

We all know we're true Disney fans, when we even get excited to see past and present bags?! ;) The design on the top one looked vaguely familiar, but I'm not sure where I saw it before. (First trip to WDW was back in 1985.)

There's even a new shirt that has that same look to it....

From someone knowledgeable I spoke with today, this will be the last week that plastic straws and lids will be available at all quick and table service locations property wide. They are also introducing reusable straw kits this week to be sold in retail locations as well. No replacement with paper straws as some speculated. Unknown if paper straws at the AK will be discontinued.

I'd imagine they will still stock some straws and lids for people with disabilities or guests who demand it. Just won't be proactively distributed.

On a totally different realm, of straws.. what about frozen bevarges? That cannot be consumed without a spoon or straw? Also, if Disney is listening.. at Festivals, where the spoon fork stuff is in a dispenser, and so many fall down, and people get another one because God only knows who touched it, sneezed on it. I always go to the next one that I can push and it comes down. Maybe hand those out, rather than the dispensers that fall on the ground half the time. That is a lot of waste. Same thing with napkins, people grab like 40, half the time. Hand them out, and have spare places for them but I would hand out to people so they won’t take a kazillion. Same thing with condiments hand them out, why have station after station, filled with tiny packs, that take up way more in the cost of packaging. People will take more, and throw them away if they do not use. Put salt and pepper shakers out and ask what condiment- sauce you may need.
Takes a little more time in line, but if truly concerned about the environment, whether be guest or Disney, should not be that big of a deal.

Haha, I always take the plasticware that's been dispensed and in the tray rather than pulling the lever for a new one.

It would save tons of waste, to hand them out, and keep people who pack their own food from swiping condiments and utensils. If you bring your own food, cups, bring your own utensils and go-alongs. And if you do, reuse it, like a straw. Disney is soooo lax, on that, you can’t bring crap into most parks. I am not trying to argue the issue, but if they are really trying to cut waste, hand that stuff out. People grab like 30 packs of ketchup and then dump it in the trash.

Even something as simple as putting individual napkin dispensers at each table would help a lot. As you say though people are just so lazy and wasteful. Now of course they’ll all feel great about themselves for not using straws while they create mountains of waste in all the ways you just mentioned.

It just gripes my tail, that people praise lids and straws are gone but will grab way more stuff, than they need and throw away. Go all the way with it, or don’t do it at all.

It would also helped if people watched their kids and did not let them keep playing with the dispensers and dispensing all of the spoons at one time. I yelled at at kid that was old enough to know better to stop doing that at the food court at POR a few years ago. Kid had to be almost 10 and he was doing that. Where the heck are these kids' parents? I agree with people take way too many napkins. I work in a restaurant and people take giant stacks and leave them on the table. They probably think the next person will use them but by health code we need to throw them away.

Same thing with packets of ketchup, salad dressing etc. Nobody needs the amount of napkins and 30 packets of salt. Put it on the table, and do away with the plastic or paper cups for sauces. Even plastic cheese, which is amazing. Give it at the counter. We do the dining plan and I quit ordering dessert. Even if it is free, I cannot eat it. Say no thanks, and those plastic cups, with lids dessert comes in, at counter services,is a whole different matter. Way bigger cuts to be made to really make a difference. Seems like something to get people to praise while not looking at the real waste. 😑 Kids should never be allowed to touch the dispensers. Mine didn’t. They are not cleanest of humans. Plus, teach them manners, from day one. My kids must have been really good.

Facts of life, if you are going to be anywhere with kids you need lids and straws or there will be a mess to clean up or buy another drink. I am a senior citizen and if I am going to be walking with a drink I need a lid and straw or I will end up spilling it. You just can’t walk around with an open tumbler or a hot cup of coffee without a lid.

Has there been any indication that Disney will not be providing lids for children’s drinks or hot drinks for adults? I just started following this thread.

On a serious note, we’re frequent visitors of an amusement park.. as in weekly or more.

Patrons are not allowed to bring any food or beverage in the park. We have an annual “beverage package”. Straws and lids are not served with cups, and I can’t think of one time when myself or 6,7,8 year old have spilled our cups..even when we do walk around with them.

Ask if you have all apples there. Are the cups designed to be used with a lid or are they stand alone??
