News Disney removing plastic straws and more by mid-2019

Has there been any indication that Disney will not be providing lids for children’s drinks or hot drinks for adults? I just started following this thread.

If you started following with my post go back to the beginning and read the craziness. If Disney is really doing this they are following the craziness of this country.

Ask if you have all apples there. Are the cups designed to be used with a lid or are they stand alone??

They look like this-

16oz cups

I wonder how many colds, flu, and other viruses will come about from putting your mouth on the cup that has been handled by who knows how many hands? At least with a straw, you are only drinking from inside the cup that has most likely not been contaminated.

Reading the craziness is what I was hoping to avoid, actually. The last time I started following a thread on page 50, I ran across a post from some frenzied person who was convinced that Disney's security policies were encouraging pedophiles and female terrorists to disguise themselves as Disney housekeepers. I know Disney has said it was going to stop putting lids on adult cold beverages, which I don't particularly like, but can live with. I just wanted to know if there was any indication (other than rampant speculation or "Chicken Little syndrome") that it was going to stop putting lids on coffee or on children's drinks, which would be silly. I don't see this as an all or nothing proposition - lids for everyone or no lids at all. I guess we'll have to wait for guest reports.

Man you are stretching on this one.
No, not at all.
If the cups have not been handled properly you are effectively licking the fingers of anyone who has touched it. Nothing is perfect but why expose yourself to something so easily avoided with a simple straw. This whole straw mess is much more about being politically correct than actually having any noticeable impact on the environment.
I was in a nationally known hamburger chain a few months ago and saw an employee knock a stack of cups off a counter onto the floor where they rolled several feet across the floor. She picked them back up and put them right back on the counter for use rather than discarding them. I will NEVER go to that restaurant again, and I sent a letter to the company headquarters about lack of food safety training for their employees.

If you think putting your lips on a cup given to you from behind the counter is going to get you any sicker than taking a straw from a dispensary that thousands of people touch a day, or just walking in close proximity to 20,000 of your nearest and dearest friends for 12 hours, you are stretching it. What you say here applies equally to any straw, lid, or food item you would have in any restaurant.

I want a cold, all I have to do is go to WDW during cold season. I seen kids that would never be going to school but people take their sick brats to the parks and could care less about spreading it around. I went 3 times at Christmas and every time I brought back a cold (It is Magical) . The attitude of the parents is I spent $3000 on this vacation .... junior is going and what do I care if strangers get sick. Not worried at all about the cups.

Straws are typically individually wrapped.

That said, I like living on the edge and don't worry about the germ issue so much on this. I dislike it on other grounds.

I thought Disney had those straw dispensers (along with the silverware dispensers (fully admit I haven't been to WDW in quite a while at this point)?

Maybe they think the soda disinfects the cup and/or the germs have anti-suction properties that prevent them from going up the straw.

i hate to be the one to tell you, but if one of the restaurant workers has a cold, you're probably equivalently doomed since they've either touched your food or touched something that will come into contact with your hands which will come into contact with your face or you will then touch your food. I also have this feeling that if they've touched the outside 1/4 inch of the cup they've touched the inside 1/4 inch of the cup or the inside of the lid, "contaminating" the contents.

Me, personally? I'm mildly germaphobic but figure that this is one of those mild exposures that will help train my immune system and keep me from becoming a bubble boy. :)

Speaking of neurotic germaphobia, does anyone think I need to wash bananas? I do touch the outside and I typically don't wash my hands after eating one. The outside also touches the plate that I sometimes use. I then subsequently sometimes use the plate for my sandwich. In these instances, do I need a separate plate for banana vs my sandwich? Or since my hands have been contaminated by the banana, can I use one plate? Or do I need to wash bananas before eating them?

I am not worried about the germs. That depends on your immune system. My granddaughter licked her way through Disney one year. Disgusting! We fussed everyone we caught her. She never got sick.

I don’t want to spill something on myself. I cannot drink in the car without spilling on my self. I can’t imagine getting a drink and walking without a lid and straw. I will be a wet mess!!! Then there are the kids! LOL! Now that is something else, they knock over and spill sitting at the table! LOL!!!

I wonder how much toxic waste trash is generated at Disney every day by disposable diapers, compared to straws.
