Sadly, I'm not surprised at all that Disney is replacing this classic attraction. I AM surprised about the timing of the closure. I just can't really think of a reason why they would choose to do this now with such depleted surroundings as opposed to waiting until, at least, Toy Story Land opens.

I can see why Disney wants to replace the ride but man I wish they would keep it focused to their films. If they need to remove all the MGM films fine but keep it film related. Mickey is a great Idea but replacing GMR?

The films in the GMR represent films across many studios, not just Disney and MGM.

Edit: I knew I'd pulled this info together before... From a post I made in 2008, here's how each movie stood at that point:

"My friend recently asked me this question, and here's the info I pulled together for him for the movies represented in the animatronic portion of the attraction (I didn't even attempt to get into the montage).

Original Production Companies:

Footlight Parade: Warner Brothers
Singin' in the Rain: MGM/Loew's
Mary Poppins: Walt Disney Productions
Public Enemy: Warner Brothers
The Searchers: Warner Brothers
Alien: 20th Century Fox
Raiders of the Lost Ark: Lucasfilm/Paramount
Tarzan the Ape Man: MGM/Loew's
Casablanca: Warner Brothers
Fantasia: Walt Disney Pictures
Wizard of Oz: MGM/Loew's

Current copyright holders (according to IMDB):

Footlight Parade: Warner Brothers
Singin' in the Rain: Loew's Incorporated
Mary Poppins: Walt Disney Productions
Public Enemy: Warner Brothers
The Searchers: Time Warner
Alien: 20th Century Fox
Raiders of the Lost Ark:Lucasfilm
Tarzan the Ape Man: ???
Casablanca: Turner Entertainment
Fantasia: Walt Disney Productions

If they wait any longer, then both TSL and SWL will be open before they finish. Which would mean trying to refurb the building without any back lot access. So, do it now while they have that access.

One of the reasons the Edison is taking so long is because they don't have a backside entrance for construction to go in and out during DS's hours of operation.

Tarzan is Warner Brothers/Turner now, like most of MGM's old catalog.

/\ Considering people can book Fastpasses so far in advance that's not really an option anymore.

Anyway if it does close it's long overdue. I like the building and queue but the ride is kind of a joke.

Rode GMR for what looks like will be the last time. This is the first time that I've ridden since the new TCM narration was added, and I don't think it works at all. I love the pre-show changes, but during the ride the narration doesn't really work in conjunction with the ride operator.

Something did strike me though about GMR and about DHS in general. There is a distinct lack of diversity within the IPs and 'stories' that drive that park. If the GMR was updated, it would need to include more diversity to reflect the visitors coming to the park, and unfortunately the 'Golden Age of Hollywood' doesn't really provide lots of good positive examples of diversity.

I wonder if that has a factor in the lower survey scores for GMR and why they don't plan to update it...and are replacing it instead.

I would say that had absolute squat to do with the low scores. I'm all for diversity but the golden movies are golden regardless. Not showing the classic films because they aren't "diverse" enough would be pathetic. I rather them just tear it out if they did that.
