Yep... we shall see.

Ahem! :D

First of all please note the date of the article. Almost everything I've said is in there and predated it.

Most notable, the feds are interested in the 8 billion being able to prove high speed rail is viable. They need to show that quickly to keep funding into the future. That is what gives the Orlando-Tampa segment an advantage. The fact that so many tourists pour through Orlando and Tampa on their way to WDW makes it a perfect test case. Additionally, many visitors are from areas that are quite comfortable using mass transit. Add to that Disney's committment, and I think it means Florida has one of, if not the strongest case, for substantial funding. Even enough to see to it the trains begin service between Tampa and Orlando by 2014.

The link is very informative.

It's really not... we're talking about outcomes, not a copy/paste political article. An article which, by the way, includes this:

California is at the top of the list, Hagler said. Voters there in 2008 agreed to borrow $10 billion to launch what the state says is a train that can travel up to 200 mph. Other states or regions that are well positioned include the Northeast, the Midwest with a potential Chicago-to-St. Louis link, and proposals to connect North Carolina and the Washington, D.C., area.

Which I believe is what you're saying will NOT happen.

I clearly said Cali will get funding, but I think it's likely to be less than expected for the reasons I explained. Namely Cali's lack of political leverage and the fact it's a fiscal disaster area.

You said:

I think Florida and/or other "politically strategic" states will get the bulk of the 8 billion dollars. I'm not saying Cali won't get anything but I'll be suprised if it's much.

That's fairly specific. So we'll see what happens.

Alrighty then.....

So seeing as Cali has now been reduced to begging for a hand out from the other 49 states, does it seem logical that the President would also send them a huge check for a bullet train they obviously can't afford to complete. Me thinks.....no.

Now Ah-nold did say a couple days ago that he was giving the Pres an "A" even after the President gave himself a "B+". So, obviously the Govenator realizes he needs to grovel. But in the end it won't matter. Because Obama already knows he has California in the bag politically speaking.

California

This news is a quadruple MousDad fistpump for me.

We are talking about Ace in the Hole for the Uni-SW-LL-Busch conglomerate to make a real dent in the Mouse. Hope they bring it hard.

If you aren't going to add something constructive to a thread, at LEAST add something humorous or at the VERY LEAST something intelligible. These oohs aahs and grunts have got to stop,

Stupid is as trolls do....

OK, I get the political stuff. And I really like trains. I've ridden the TGV in France, and the Intercity 125 in the UK. I've driven monorails. And I hate buses.

But I don't think you guys understand how little this is going to matter to the average WDW visitor. For most people, the trip from the airport to your resort will be longer and more complex than with Magical Express. Much longer than with a cab or rental car. It might be cool, it might be fun, but it will take longer.

HS trains are not like subways, or trolley systems. Trains don't leave every 15 minutes. It's more like every 2-3 hours. And they won't take you to your resort, but to a central station of some sort, from which you will have to take some sort of transportation, most likely a bus, to your resort. When you add the wait for the train could be a couple of hours], the train trip [20 minutes], the wait for your resort bus [20 minutes] and the drive to your resort [5-10 minutes], it could easily take 3 hours. Assuming nothing goes wrong.

And if I'm there with a party of five, and it's $20 per for a train ticket... That free bus that Disney used to have is sounding pretty good. Even that taxi that's leaving now and will take us to our resort's front door in 30 minutes for about the same price is sounding good.

And this train is from the same folks that brought you... Amtrak. I just hope they don't let Amtrak run it.

The most expensive transportation system... Is the one that nobody uses.

as long as the various parties don't it up - i can see this working well... :)

and mick - us europeans especially - love trains. I can see a lot of people using it if it is implemented well and the trains themselves are relaxed and roomy.
