Disney Announcement to come soon

OK, how is that Disney Welcome Center doing in Woodfield Mall near Chicago? I haven't been able to go and see it. Mostly, I don't want to get sucked in and blow a bunch of cash I don't have on a DVC membership. That will come in my life, but not right now.

Mineral King! Mineral King!

(just kidding, I know MK is a dead concept, creatively and legally speaking (can't build there anymore, parkland))

My intention is not to be negative, so I hope that isn't how this comes across, but is anyone else afraid that other "mini-Disney" experiences will diminish the "real" Disney experience? Mostly because the quality has gone to crap, but I really have come to hate the Disney store. Instead of feeling "magical" like I do at Disney, I feel like I am bombarded with consumerism/commercialism and it makes me very cynical about the cash cow side of Disney. The almight buck has turned my fun and unique Disney shopping experience into Wal-mart with a Disney theme, and it has extended to the parks. Nothing is original. I don't like that. I want going to Florida or California to be special. It won't feel like that if you can get a taste on every corner in America. Just my two cents. Kind of like the Native American casinos and riverboat casinos that have popped up EVERYWHERE. Going to Las Vegas or Atlantic City is no longer quite the same big deal as it was. Far better, of course, but just not the same. Diminished. However, if it must happen, I am glad that many of you out there will be pleased and enjoy it. Apparently, I am the minority.

I know it'll probably never happen in a million years, but I'd love to see Disney do something in St. Louis.

I can dream, can't I? :animwink:

And isn't it interesting that Walt Disney himself proposed putting a small themed entertainment center in St. Louis in the early 1960's? It would have had a few rides, a couple of shows, and stores and restaurants. All built downtown in an effort to revitalize the urban core. The deal fell apart, and Anheuser-Busch didn't help things by insisting that beer be served there, which Walt was opposed to.

You can see sketches of the facility and the proposed rides and shows in the Walt Disney's Missouri book still available in bookstores and online.

So all Jay Rasulo is doing is bringing back an old idea Walt had given serious thought to 45 years ago. Walt decided not to do it, but maybe Jay Rasulo will succeed with the concept instead?

^ I actually have the opposite concern. I think Disney is thinking too small here. From what I can gather from posters who seem to be in the know, these location based entertainment facilities will be more like Hilton Head or Vero Beach than a new mini park. So I would think guesses like NYC with a theater and store on the bottom floors of the hotel or even a Wilderness lodge-esque hotel/ski resort ala Mineral King with the Country Bear Jamboree would be closer to what we might see (I know nothing - these are just speculation).
I think Disney could successfully do something closer to mini-parks in a few (very few) cities scattered across the US and enhance Anahiem and Orlando rather than take away from them. As long as they do not try to make small Magic Kingdom parks, but rather focused on completely unique experiences not offered at the two existing parks, they should be okay. Maybe an expanded Frontierland offering in the form of a Wild West Adventure with the Western River Expedition, a Golden Horseshoe/Hoop-De-Doo show, etc. in a boutique park, with a Grand Texan style hotel and golf course. Or an expanded Discover Bay. One can dream...

While I have conflicted thoughts on this development, I have thought since first reading about this that Niagara Falls would be a perfect location...

12-14 million visitors from all over the world visit Niagara Falls (USA...I'm not sure about the numbers for Canada). Niagara Falls, USA is woefully underdeveloped, especially compared to Niagara Falls, Canada, which has Clifton Hill, a nighttime entertainment area, as well as two casinos. Putting location-based entertainment in Niagara Falls could easily bring in millions of people per year (and perhaps could even draw more people to the area), and help encourage tourists to spend more money in Niagara Falls, USA (particularly since there may be even more hassle in going across the US/Canada border, leading to tourists hesitant to cross into Canada and more than willing to spend their money in the US). It is less than two hours from Toronto (the 5th largest city in North America), six hours from NYC, and a little over 3 hours from Cleveland and Detroit. It really is centrally located compared to other major cities in the NE, in addition to the automatic tourist numbers.

Honestly, I think it's a no-brainer, but that's just me

Anyway, just my thoughts...

For what it's worth (and that's probably not much...) -

My In-Laws own some land and a trailer in Pigeon Forge, TN, which they use as a vacation home. They were told by some local townsfolk who are working on some construction there (on an area which has been grated out and developed) that Disney is doing it, and builing a water park and maybe something else...

Now before you all attack me with flaming arrows....I'm not saying I believe this, just telling you what they were told.

This is VERY interesting for me to hear. A new interstate is being built in our area, and I had heard a few days ago that Disney has bought property near it. I had been wondering why Disney would buy a very large amount of land here, this makes sense. I hope it's true.

Wow no way, they bought property and people are saying its disney...

you will never believe what i heard, i heard they bought property in Alaska and are going to have the biggest mouse iditerod, with 2 million mice pulling the person....

Anyone can buy property, people just say its disney because its a big name that people love to throw out. Everywhere that property is being bought, is not disney, sorry to say.

I'm sure not all of it is, but I'm sure some of it is. I'm not going to debate it, because I don't know if it's true or not, but I heard about it in our area from a tour guide that I personally know. I've never heard anything about Disney buying land here in all my years. I think it's a big coincidence that I heard that a few days ago and now I see this thread. I didn't think a lot of it before this thread, but it makes me wonder now!

I'm wondering if these stand alone hotels will be used for the Adventure by Disney tours. That way they are not paying other hotels chains during their ABD

Pigeon Forge would be a great place for Disney to invest in. I remember when that place wasn't that much. Silver Dollar City was there (where DollyWood is now) there was some stuff to do in Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge was just a strip with extra Hotels. Crazy how that place exploded like it did.
There are so many rumors out there.. who knows, we heard a similar one about Western NC not too long ago. I do believe that they bought property there but not for a park or anything, could be Golf related? Since there are so many popular courses around there (Tom Fazio's Champion Hills for one) Or just a smart investment. Time will tell... I guess
