Disney announce plans for 15th anniversary of Disney's Animal Kingdom

The "big" marketing stunt done for the ride that really let everyone know about it was the event in Times Square, but it was originally announced 5th anniversary event, yes. Here we are 10 years later, the park has seen no other major additions. Hell, the only noteworthy add besides Everest was Finding Nemo: The Musical, and even that was just a replacement (albeit an upgrade).

EDIT: Looks like Steve was right!

My brother-in-law worked marketing for Sylvania (which did the eyes of the yeti for the Times Square event), brought me a bunch of swag from the event, including a great EE scarf. I'll have to dig that out....forgot I had it!

As for the anniversary, I'll be there. Some Disney suits will obviously be in attendance, but only to distract the masses from the real purpose....a merchandising event.

I can see maybe a 20th or 25th anniversary observances (especially if they have something big and brand new about to open), but 15th is really a 'who cares' kind of thing.....kind of like a 6th or 8th.

You've never seen a 15th anniversary celebration? It's not that unusual for every five years to be considered a milestone. For example, the overseas Disney parks all celebrated their 5th, 10th, etc. anniversaries.

Yes, Disney learned quite a lot from the 25th Event.

EPCOT's 25th happened because of our little 'fan uprising', indeed. I will take some of the 'blame' for that....happily.

The 30th happened because Disney learned from the experience they had on the 25th...and all the money it generated for them. They definately sat up and took notice, and realized suddenly that retro sells and anniversary events like this can create insane sales numbers.
They liked this, and it of course helped to 'inspire' Disney to create other 'fan event anniversary' happenings. I have found it amusing to watch from the sidelines.

The 30th was done as a cash in by Disney...in my opinion. If you look back, the comparisons between the two are interesting.

The 25th was a fan-spearheaded 'movement' that began humbly on this very website and garnered some serious steam after a few months of rallying.
Disney eventually rolled out the red carpet and gave one h*** of a days experience in the end. It was a amazing experience like no other...and can never be repeated. It was a true one-off.

The 30th was created by Disney itself, and announced and hyped on all of the official Disney media outlets. The big difference this time was that the actual REAL 'event' was a expensive D23 sanctioned happening...which fans had to pay big bucks to attend. In-Park happenings were sparse. It smacked too much of marketing..and it seemed sadly obvious that the 'anniversary celebration' was only happening just to sell D23 Epcot's 30th tickets and related merchandise.

To be fair though, i think it is nice that Disney is making a effort to acknowledge milestone anniversary dates related to the Parks. Fans no doubt love it, and we all like the cool merch and special happenings. So i guess it is a win/win situation for most....

A shout out to all my 25th peeps out there....it has been ages.

Okay, now I'm curious. What exactly did the 25th anniversary entail?

Well, that's because nobody thought 'Paris would ever see any of them. :D

Here is a nice place to start, with some cool photos.
http://www.yesterland.com/epcot25.html

Another spot with several articles about the 25th, with lots of photos...
http://allears.net/tp/ep/25celebration.htm

Lots more out there ...as well as YouTube videos of the special Illuminations tag for the 25th and tours of the great 25th Anniverary of EPCOT display room.

At the time, this happening was a big deal.
It may not impress as much now as since this event, most of the WDW park anniversaries that have taken place since have included items that were directly copied from the EPCOT 25th happening.
The free buttons, custom maps, added tags to finale fireworks presentations, retro limited edition merch, and yes..even the presence of Marty Sklar...were all repeated for WDW anniversaries since.

Like i had said earlier, Disney learned a lot from not ignoring EPCOTs 25th .....thanks to passionate fans who love this Park.

Disney did not ignore Epcot's 25th.

It happened during the slumping economy. Disney paid attention to indicators the previous year and did not play it up.

Because of Disney's safe decisions during this time, the company survived much better than most American companies.

Say what you will about Disney grabbing at money as much as they do, but in this situation, the scaling back was a well planned decision for sustainability.

If not for these small decisions we would be talking about the Comcast/Disney corporation. Plus, a bloated celebration would NOT have been a great PR move with millions losing jobs and millions more having to put off retirement for another 5-10 years.

But hey, some guests really needed to feel like Epcot owed them something???

A scheduling conflict perhaps? Or has Disney, or Joe Rohde himself, decided it would not be a good idea to face cast and guests questioning about Avatar and the Yeti. Shame though, as Joe's presence was the only thing about that day that was of interest to me.
Maybe it is personal.

It certainly is a lot shorter celebration than DLP's 2 year celebration for turning 20 ;)

Shame Joe Rhode wont be in attendance - maybe he juat can't stand the thought of seeing a broken yeti, a park centrepiece duck-taped together, a Dinosaur ride that needed more to it 15 years ago, a park that used to celebrate african and asian cultures but now hires college program kids, a parade that has been rolling the streets for 10+ years and stlll no presence of the dragon that is slap bang in the middle of the parks logo! I'd probably stay away too! :)

They tried. It took fans to kick their butts. What's $100,000 or so to a park that makes that in tickets in less than a week?

They were embarrassed. And now they see anniversaries at WDW as a mini corporate cash cow sadly. Compare the scripted but passionate speeches of the 25th to the pointless, managed drivel on the 30th.

How was the Year of a Million Dreams not a bloated marketing celebration? In 2007 the economy was still faaaabulous, with urrbody riding high on fake mortgages and inflated stocks.

That said, I wish Comcast had bought Disney. They're doing a bang-up job with Universal; I can only imagine what would be going on in the P&R division if Steve Burke was in charge.
